wow I didn't know other people struggled with this too. now I feel less embarrassed. I have always felt that both showering and applying makeup are indicators for me of my stability! even before I was told I may be bipolar...it just seems like such a chore and so hard. I can't explain it. when I am not feeling well it's just overwhelming to think about, especially washing my hair. teeth brushing also! I still do it but it's just really hard sometimes.

I do like bath products, maybe I should give that a try again. I am glad to know I am not the only one that feels this way.

Yes I so have this problem!! It's worse in the winter bc I'm too cold to undress. I've tried buying really nice bath stuff like Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo and his new one lemon sage. But I just quit caring about showers, teeth and dressing. Almost everyday I wear sweats or pj's with no bra of course. Also, I haven't shaved in months. If I didn't have AA and therapy I might be agoraphobic. I have brought this up in T. For a few months I walked 5+ miles a week outside. I didn't lose any weight so I was all forget this ****. Now I get irate if my husband asks me if I'm walking that day. If I have to answer the door I always say I have the flu lol.

Walking is very helpful without the weight loss dimension to it. It improves the mood, protects from dementia, and does a score of other good things, TnT.

I avoid showering as much as possible. Especially in the winter when it is so cold, I am afraid of freezing. I do brush my teeth, & wash my hair, however the shower causes great anxiety...no idea what the cause of this is.

You're welcome, took me years to figure out exactly why I avoid showers even when I feel good.

I also avoid showering when I can. I don't know why either exactly because I always feel alright once I'm there - that or I burst into tears if I'm in a depression.

I would guess that that has something to do with it - when I showered or when I went to bed were the only times I could cry freely growing up... have probably associated both with that.

Also when I'm depressed I just don't give a rat's ***** about much. And if I'm avoiding it while in an up then it just means I'm too "busy" to bother. haha.

Still keep mostly to my schedule though.

it just takes so much out of you, especially on those days where everything is just a chore.

mainly for me though, it's lack of reason, lack of insentive

i mean, for 1 thing.. i'm not about to host a fancy dinner party or present myself at a confrence (just as an example), so what's the point?

my other point is, that you're only just going to get back in to bed later anyway (whether it be in the evening, or during the day because of how you feel) so what's the point?

Thanks Hamster. I know that's true as my pdoc said exercise, volunteering and sobriety are crucial to dealing with depression. I'm just so damn upset about my weight I feel horrible.

WOW, I would have sworn that getting into a shower was only on "My daily goals" list. It's refreshing to learn I am not alone. Maybe I'm not so far gone as I thought I was.

Funny to come across this as it's a long-standing problem for me. My take is that I'm usually too depressed to care about showering or brushing my teeth. But if I'm hypomanic I'm too busy to shower or brush my teeth. Either way I'm f*cked. Plus by the time I'm hypomanic I'm so used to not showering much that it doesn't seem important because it's already a habit not to shower regularly. About to get a root canal so maybe that will teach me a lesson about dental hygiene (the vicodin is quite nice but not worth the expense of a root canal).

Nowheretohide,

When I am hypomanic (I am right now coming down from a home organizing hypomania), it is really hard to pause to eat, drink, and even pee. Literally, I have to tell myself that I need to go to the bathroom and only then move that piece of furniture.

I wish I got the home organization hypomania more!! I will have to put that on my agenda for my next hypomanic extravaganza, but it seems like it's been such a long time since I had the pleasure. Wish I could trigger it somehow.

I usually channel the energy into comparatively worthless things. My most recent bouts have been video games, gardening, and a fish tank... useless (and to bring it back to the original topic - all while not showering regularly!!).

I bet your house/apartment looks kick-*** right about now at least

I also plan the next hypo for a small gardening spree. Small because I only have a balcony.

I have found myself going as far as setting up the shower with my liquid soap, shampoo, conditioner along with a clean towel and a new set of under garments. The phone will ring or something happens and that is as far as I get to climbing in the shower as I had planned. Somewhat like my desire for food that requires some prep and cooking, my desire goes out the window and I do not eat until hours later on.

But YES, when I do shower or eat it is a good time.

I really dislike mindless routine activities, e.g. showering.

Some people suggest "disrupting" the monotonous aspect of showering by indulging in luxury products (e.g. a nice shower gel), a pedicure or manicure, lighting candles, etc.

Caveats: 1) sometimes I don't have time to do those "rituals", 2) if they made me feel better, I'd want to do them regularly, and that would take the surprise/luxury element out of the equation. Luxury would become routine, and I'd be back to the drawing board again.

Nowadays, I can force myself to shower every day or every other day. I don't enjoy it, but I have a boyfriend who I see regularly, and I think it's courteous to maintain my hygiene for him (after all, he does the same for my sake).

Guess what, Hamster? Yesterday I walked 5.25 miles, and made it in under 15 min miles. It felt great afterwards. I'm going to get back into my routine even though it's still cold. I'm hoping with the right diet I can finally lose the weight. Big Hugs♥

So amazes that others have this problem. I always thought I was just a really lazy horrible person that I couldn't even get myself to shower or brush my teeth. I don't even tell my T because I'm so embarrassed. Thanks to all for posting their input and making me feel less alone!

I totally have "brush teeth" and "take shower" entered as daily task on my phone just in the hope that a reminder will help me do them! I completely understand where ure coming from!

Normally I shower every 2 or 3 days when I finally force myself to. Lately it's once a week and only because my hair is so greasy I have no choice and last time my husband said it's disgusting. So I'm trying to be better about it now.
