So, my disability had been approved for a while starting January 1st. Today I finally found out the amount and while it is half what my take home used to be at least it is something. I get paid at the end of the month so that will relive us of some financial stress.

I know disability is just a small gift but gotta rally to make the government put more money into social causes like social housing or even disability checks. ~I am on disability myself ~

I'm soon to apply for disability here in Australia, from everything I hear it's horrible to try to get but I have to do it. Makes me feel a little lame needing it but that little bit of help and a little less stress would be really helpful. Glad you got it!!

Woooo-hooooo! Congratulations!

It is a big relief when that gets approved. A lot less than you made before, yes. But, a lot of businesses and apartment buildings have programs that even things out a bit.

We own our house so no discounts. My husband makes too much money for us to qualify for any funding.

I have done some reading and apparently only 40% of people who apply get approved on their first application. I was approved in 2 weeks. It makes me wonder what my doctor and pdoc put in the medical forms.

Are you on CPP-disability? That is what I am on and was my only option. The government needs to spend more on mental health and maybe some of the other issues will lessen.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I know I am lucky to be getting as much as I am and it will certainly help our family. I wish I could be working but at this time it just is not possible.

I immediately suspected you were on CPP since you used to work. For people who don't qualify for CPP their only option is a provincially run disability support program. They get about half the amount CPP pays at least in Ontario.

In Ontario it takes months to get approved for the Ontario Disability Support Program. My friend had to wait 6 months. During that time he was on welfare and was barely making ends meet.

Doesn't Alberta have a disability program for people who have never paid into CPP?

Congratulations by the way.

We have AISH = Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped and it is $1500/month. I do know it takes a pretty long time to be approved. If I was single I would qualify and could have both benefits but I am happy to have what I get even if it is significantly less then AISH.

Wow $1500 a month! ODSP pays a single person about $1100. The rent portion covers about half of the at market rents in Toronto and Ottawa. The rest has to be absorbed by the living allowance portion. The fortunate ones get into subsidized housing.

Not sure what a one bedroom apartment is now going for in Edmonton. We were paying $1400 for a 3 bedroom townhouse. The one thing I wish that I got which AISH recipients get is a free leisure access pass - rec centers, the zoo, Fort Edmonton park.

I get SSI...have been since 1997 when a wonderful social worker helped to save my life. I don't even know if she knows how much she helped me.. I get state aid to help pay for my meds which totaled over 7 thousand dollars last year.... but I made the mistake of working for a few months last year...which was a fiasco and I ended up in hospital due to all the problems...and them BAM...the state goes and takes away 50% of my help...because I worked....feel like I am between a rock and hard place, as my insulin was just added and that costs almost 500 bucks a month...do not know how I will make it through this year. I did appeal and the state said they would watch my med bills and step in and help if it was needed but would not change their ruling til next year....but disability help, though not that much money has helped me to survive this long...and I do appreciate it...even though it is an uphill fight...I got to do it!!! Stay the fight...keep the faith...take care now.
thanks for listening...

Lynn - what a difficult situation. I was told that if I tried to go back to work and was not successful that I would automatically be back on disability. I am allowed to make $5000/year without losing any of my disability. My disability does not pay for meds at all. I am lucky through my husband's employer we have 100% coverage for meds. I pay about $80/week (I hate this 7 days of pills at a time). Hope things get sorted out for you.

Hi Technigal,

I am on provincial disability and they pay for most of my pills and I am covered for $1000 dollars for dental care I am allowed to make up to 800$ a month in addition to my disability. its the same with me about going off of disability I can get back on it.

Ya, if I was on AISH I would get my meds covered but I don't qualify for it. My husband is an engineering tech and makes way too much for me to get any other disability then CPP. We will figure out how to live on our lower income.

Alberta and British Columbia seem very generous. I wish Ontario provided more for their disabled.

If you work ODSP will deduct half of your pay after $200. The only time they won't do this is if you are a student. This makes it very hard for people who want to get off. If you leave the program and need to return they will "rapidly reinstate" you only if you meet certain conditions.

It is hard to get off of AISH, it took my husband almost a year to convince them that he could work again.

I have found that medical care in Alberta has been superior to what I could access in Ontario (grew up in Whitby and went to Trent before moving out here). The wait times don't even seem as bad as they are there. We lived in Peterborough for a year after my dad died, it was so hard to get any mental health assistance.

Ontario needs oil. The province is broke.

Mental health services provided by hospitals are usually hard to access unless you are psychotic. There are so many services for those people but hardly anything for non-psychotic disorders. I think other illnesses are being neglected.

Community based services are a lot quicker to get into than hospital based services. I get all my mental healthcare in the community and am satisfied with the service I get. It is far more superior than the psychiatric outpatient clinic I used to go to at the hospital.

I was really lucky to get a psychiatric appointment in two weeks. It would have been worse if I had to go to a hospital. Most people wait 6 to 9 months.
