I've been a member of PC for almost 3 years. This is my first experience participating in online forums and I've learned a lot. There is one thing that I have tried and tried and keep failing at. I want to learn how to quote a small passage from a post that I want to respond to.

I know there is a tutorial, and I have repeatedly tried to let it guide my steps, but I am missing something. I never succeed. This is so frustrating. I have really tried. It seems that lots of member know how to do it.

Would someone be kind and generous enough to post a step-by-step on this? It would be best, if the post contained nothing else, but just how to extract, say, a single sentence out of another member's post and get it to appear in my reply with the quote properly credited to the poster.

I know it can be tedious to try to explain something like this. If someone has the patience to help me, I would be very grateful. I've been trying, now, literally for years.
Thanks for this!

I don't know Rose and I'm not sure it's possible to quote a part of a post. I just do the quote and edit out what I don't want. With some member's posts that would be time consuming
My email client will only quote what I highlight so I know the software to do this exists.
Thanks for this!

Maybe editing out is what everyone is doing. (?) I see so many members quoting just small parts of a post. Like they quote a small part and then respond . . . and then they may quote another small part and then respond. Each time the small part appears in the indented thing with the attribution to who wrote it. I didn't think they were editing out the bulk of the post each time, though maybe they were.

Well. I'll try that way.

Okay. Let's use process of elimination. At the bottom of a post is the button that says "REPLY." It's the first button on the left. I know what that does and how to use it. Next to it is a buttom with like a cartoonish looking quote mark ("). When I hover my mouse over it, up comes these words: Multi-quote This Message. What, pray-tell, does that do . . . anybody?

Well, Rose, I tried to use that button, but it didn't seem to do anything. What I do is quote normally and then make copies if I want to multi quote. That can get confusing with a long message, but basically you could break it up into pieces using the start and end tags associated to the message you're replying to.

In this case, the start tag is in square brackets, which I'm leaving out because they are formatting codes: quote=Rose76;3590795

And the end tag must similarly be in square brackets: /quote

That's all I know, though it's only a stopgap, I suppose.

That I can answer If you want to quote several posts then tick that multiquote button for each post you want to quote. When you're ready to post click reply with quote on the last post. Doesn't matter if you click the multiquote button on the last post as far as I can tell.
Thanks for this!

Thanks George. Based on what you said, I put up the above post with multiple quotes.

I've learned something. The first two posts came up as they were. The third one came up with anything that George, himself, had not authored removed. I guess that tells me what the button does. I still don't get what the blurb says when you hover over that button. It say's, "Multi-Quote This Message." I guess I have to translate that to mean, "Include this message in a reply that will include other messages."

Well . . . I guess I'm getting to know what other's are doing. I sure appreciate the help from you guys who are giving me the views from each of your perspectives. Thanks so much for trying so hard to help me as best you can. Any more insights anyone has are welcome.
Thanks for this!

this is how i do it, not sure if there is a better way:

Click "Reply" at bottom right of post.
Highlight the text you want to reply to.
Click "Quote" icon which is to the left of the # sign or to the right of the yellow square with the mountain and moon above the message. It will wrap around the selected text.
Edit out what you don't want in your reply.

hth

Hi folks, I'm coming a little late to this particular discussion but here's one that we had on the same subject several years ago, soon after I'd first figured it out:
http://forums.psychcentral.com/commu...ing-quote.html
Since I wrote that, I've learned that a lot of people use the WYSIWYG editor instead of the text editor that I was using, so those examples may not look like anything you see on your screen. If I'm doing anything the least bit tricky (like learning to work with quotes ), I prefer to use the text editor so I can see if I'm ending up with any stray tags or anything. To switch back and forth between the two kinds of editors, just click on the button that looks like this:

Please help me quote.

You'll find it in the upper right corner of whatever editor you're using. For instance (this one happens to be the "advanced mode" editor):

Please help me quote.

Let me know how (if?) the discussion in that thread works for you.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
