I suffer from both depression and suicidal thoughts. They are like 2 twist ties wound together. You can't address 1 without addressing the other. Yet that's exactly what everyone wants to do. The mental "hospitals" are just designed to keep you safe and medicated. They don't deal with the underlying causes. Yet psychiatrists who deal with depression say I need a higher level of care because I'm suicidal & won't help me with my depression.
There are clinics around (not that I really want to do that) that have in patient programs that are supposedly great for treating depression. However they won't accept you if you're suicidal. It's like having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You're told to remove the jelly but leave the peanut butter. You just can't do it. You can't treat my depression and leave the suicidal problems for someone else to deal with. |

You make excellent points here. There are some who also deal with trauma but do not have PTSD. Trauma, head injuries, lack of social support, and lack of resources also factor in.
Many policies prevent people like you from getting the help they need and desire. The help you need may include medication for some level of stabilization, but what if you are treatment-resistant and cannot get stabilized? Do they ignore your wants to process what is potentially underlying your depression, perhaps because they risk the worsening of your SI? Could they not offer coping skills instead of IP and meds? A DBT or CBT treatment might help you. But then there is the issue with your job and your personal records. If you can pay out of pocket instead of going through your insurance, maybe that is one way around this. There are also self-help books, too. |

That is hard, @Twitch99! I completely agree witht he wise and wonderful advice from the wise and wonderful @Lilly2! Please do listen to what @Lilly2 has to say! It does seem weird that they won't accept people who are depressed but suicidal, although I guess there are some legal causes they don't want to get into. Have you talked to your Pdoc about ALL of this? Perhaps he can give you some advice if you want to enter into one of those Clinics. In any case, keep working on yourself. I believe that the best thing to do is to work on the underlying causes of your Depression while also taking the necessary Meds! I am happy that you're trying to help yourself and that you have someone watching over you at the very least. Sending many safe, warm huga to BOTH you, @Twitch99, your Family, your Friends, your Wife, your Relatives, your Pdocs, your Therapists, your Doctors, your Nurses and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking no matter what happens, ok?

I talked with my wife's T over the phone. I knew he couldn't give me any treatment advice but he was willing to explain what the different levels of care were from a mental hospital in patient to intensive outpatient to partial hospitalization to full hospitalization in a clinic. That's where I learned that the private clinic is an average of a 21 day stay, but they don't take patients who are suicidal. Once again though going back to an earlier point I've made, No one listens to me. I've been suicidal for 30 years. I have good days and bad days. Yet in 30 years I have never attempted, but all they see is Red flag suicidal we can't deal with that. So they would call the cops on me send me to a mental hospital for a 72 hour hold I get out and I'm in worse shape than I am now. But hey let's pat ourselves on the back because we did good. ![]() |
