Hi,

I am just wondering if it is common to have suicidal ideation/rollplay without feeling depressed? I'm not interested in gaining attention, sympathy, getting committed to a mental asylum for 72 hours, traumatic gastric lavage, brain damage resulting from failed attempts to disable the respiratory system or brain, burdening society, mentally scarring loved ones i.e. dieing slowly from hepatic necrosis while my friends and family question the unquestionable... etc etc

Logically suicide seems like a terrible idea, so why am I so fixated on it?. I am just wondering if it is possible to treat this sort of ideation/rollplay if depression isn't part of the equation? I have heard that passing suicidal thoughts are somewhat natural? Is this true?

I'm sorry I don't really have any personal experience with this, as depression always accompanies my suicidal thoughts.

I don't think what you are experiencing is necessarily abnormal, but I am by no means an expert. I think many of us go through phases of curiousity or fixation on death or suicide or other morbid things. I think it is a way of trying to "sort out" these things.

If it is causing you significant distress that you are having these thoughts, it certainly wouldn't hurt to find a counselor, pastor, etc. to talk with.

Thank you, both of you, for your words and advice. I am grateful. I've been reading that trying to stop thinking about something can in fact have the opposite affect, from what I have read it can cause the exact thoughts you are trying to stop, resulting in the neural pathways for that thought being bolstered. It seems like it is analogous to a feedback loop of sorts.

I think I'm going to go see somebody to develop some skills to cope.

EXACTLY OMG.

For no reason at all, I've been thinking of that since I was like 7 years old, and began hurting myself for no apparent reason when I was 9. ;[ I now have bipolar disorder and I'm 20, lol.

You are not alone.

But I just want to say, that my suicidal thoughts lately are accompanied by severe depression and severe insomnia. Those thoughts that happened when I was young, I really couldn't explain >.>

My suggestion: Suround yourself with positive things for the mean time, or seek professional help. I'm no expert. Perhaps a psychiatrist can enlighten you on this matter. There's nothing wrong with turning to medical help. I was once afraid and dissed the matter, but I'm coping now.

Have had my share of suicide attempts (starting at 15)--last one 1 1/2 years ago to my dismay (54 now). I had been stable for 5 years prior to that (bipolar 1). But I have found that after an attempt I get an almost relief from stress & cares of life. I think "I could be dead"--what does this or that matter? It gives a sense of relief from the overwhelming depression somehow. Maybe what cutting does, from what I've read.

So I am definitely seeking new methods of coping (have very high degree of anxiety daily, too) through therapy & going to have an intake next week to check out the appropriateness of a DBT group. I am searching aggressively for help to my over-reactions to things, my emotional "melt downs" that are triggered by daily events...No way to live. --Suzy

I THINK ONE REASON WHY PEOPLE HAVE SUICIDAL IDEATION IS BECAUSE OF LOW FRUSTRATION TOLERANCE... IF A PERSON CANT HANDLE EVEN THE MOST SUPRFICIAL PROBLEMS IN THEIR LIFE, THEN THEIR UP TO THAT...

Who are you to define superficial? Sometimes it's the proverbial straw.
