I have not had much of an appitete of late..
i have started a new medicane Topmax, and I just do not hvae a appitet at all, when I do eat, I never feel hungery befoer or after, nor do I feel full before or after.. I hardly ever want to drink anything... I push water all the time so I do not get dehydrated, and yes I have told my doc, and he said it should go away, but ti is starting to worry me, cause even my comfort foods do not sound good, or taste good.. I'm just rambling and scared, cause I'm afarid i'll go back to not eating again, or stop all together, but the meds aer helping my headaches???? What should I do???? <font color=green> The Toa pours our everthing into life -- It is cornucopie that never runs dry. It is the deep source of everything-- it is nothing and yet in everything.

How long did your doctor say it should take to go away? Give it that long, and keep reminding yourself to eat and drink water on a regular schedule in the mean time. Then if the problem persists, call the doctor again. You're doing good to be aware of the problem and keep monitoring yourself. You'll be okay - just let us know how you are doing.

Topamax can supress appetite, it had been a side effect for some people while taking it, for me, it did nothing in that area, so even my pdoc suggested I stop taking it and we went to something else. You may want to talk to your doc about this, maybe it is just a matter of time and dosage? Whatever, it is always to report any changes in yourself to the prescribing doctor.

But yes I am keeping a "food Journal" like Emily4040 told me to do, so I can keep up with what I eat, and what I do nto eat in a day's time, It is hard, but I will try to keep it up at all times.. Well I didn't like the weight gain from some of the different mood stabilizers I was on, so he said "let's add some Topamax, and possibly switch to it if does all that it was doing for many people on it. Everyone experiences different things , some people may or not have the same outcome with certain meds. I guess at that time I was unlucky with the weight loss side effect. My brother-in-law was put on Topamax for some chronic nerve pain he was having, he lost about 13 pounds over a 6 month period, I saw him recently he gained most of it back just over time.

Anti-convulsants that are used for epileptics, and bipolars, are also used for people with migraine problems, one that I once was on was Depakote, that certainly does NOT supress appetite, just increases it. I worked with a woman that had chronic migraines, tried everything, then (I don't remember which one) he switched her to an anti-convulsant and it did the trick for her, in fact last spring on the TV news one of the health features was about how that category of meds is now being used for more than just epilepsy.

So, have you been eating a healthy amount of food? And when do you go back to the doc? And when do you move up to 100? And when did he say this no appetite issue would taper off?
The thing I think is odd is that Topamax is also prescribed as an appetite supressant, so why would that feature go away? Ya know? Maybe is does for some people, and not others? Lately Topamax is being prescribed for everything - started as an anti-convulsant, then a mood stablizer, then an appetite suppresant, then for headaches, and now it's been shown to decrease alcohol cravings. Anyhoooo....keep posting LD!!! And take care....and answer all my questions...and all the ones I forgot to ask. Emmy "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. Don't worry too much just yet. I do have a question, though: Have you asked yourself some questions? -- Did your doc or pharmacist say how long of an adjustment period for such a problem when starting this medication? Does the not eating make you happy? Do you want this? You seem nervous that this side effect of the drug could lead into something more. I truly understand--I would probably wonder the same if you were me (or I was you?)! Tell your doc if you are having any thoughts that maybe it might be a "good thing". If your doc feels the risk is too great, he WILL change your medication. Talk to your doc, the pharmacist, do more research on the drug and side effects the best you can--I know much of the good medical references use lingo that you won't understand, but keep trying. You'll be okay. It's good that you do notice the side effect about your appetite. Your doc should be concerned, too, but remember that he also knows more about how the drug works, how long, etc. {{{hugs}}}

I think i have been eating a heatly amount of food. I eat breakfast lunch and dinner, not all in good sizes but I do eat.. I have been trying to keep the food journal that you told me, it is not easy to always right down what I am eating, but I am trying to trust me on this one ok..... ![]() <font color=green> The Toa pours our everthing into life -- It is cornucopie that never runs dry. LD - Ah HA! This is sounding familiar. When food is one of your coping mechanisms...and suddenly it's gone <*poof*> , what happens? Can't cope!
Please have this conversation with your T. What may happen is that troubles may percolate up which may have been buried by food previously. Ya know? Keep a look out for mood changes, and whatever is your "Achilles Heel" emotionally speaking. If you don't keep a diary, this is a good time to start one. You might find all sorts of new stuff popping up. Really truly - be extra careful with yourself now. Be especially kind to My Lady. And talk to your T about this missing coping mechanism, OK pooks?
