Honey, trust me on this one -- laxatives and purging will just kill you in the end. You may think you want to lose "15 pounds of fat" right away, but that's not really what you're looking for.
How about thinking about what you really want? Is it to feel good about yourself? To be admired by someone else? To feel attractive? More self-confidence? What does that "15 pounds of fat" represent to you? What's more, through the nutritional counseling and refeeding program I'm going through right now, I've learned something else -- one of those sick, cosmic jokes, but true -- when you've been malnourished and underweight for any length of time, you put all the new weight on around your midsection. So, if you've been starving yourself, or purging away weight, you'll regain it right around your belly. Only time will redistribute that weight, so there's not a lot you can do about it. Vomiting and laxatives won't really get the calories out of your system, since they still allow most of the calories to be absorbed. Combine that fact with how sick they'll both make you, and how much lasting damage they can do, and ask yourself if you really want to do that? The answer should be NO! Are you seeing a therapist? Going to any support groups? Doing anything to improve your situation? If not, why not? Good luck to you.

so that must be why i have gained wieght around my waist, since i starting my purging in the last year. i have put on 20 pounds, all while trying to lose....(and it is all in my mid section!) it becomes a vicious cycle doesnt it?! the more i try, the more i gain, thus causing me to try harder and gain more!
i need to stop it. its just hard. how do you control the urge to eat, and then avoid feeling guilty afterward? |

cottoncandylocks,
If you have been purging, and you feel guilty after eating (even if you eat a normal amount), then you might already have an ED. There are books out there about something called "Intuitive Eating" that might help. Actually, the one book has that as the title...there are also several books by the author Geneen Roth that discuss the same principle. Basically, it involvs learning how to listen to your body's own signals, and feed yourself what your body tells you it needs. It can sound real simple to say "eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full," but for a lot of people, they have lost the ability to identify real hunger, so these books can help with that. They will also talk about ways to deal with those times when you want to eat for reasons other than hunger. Good luck. Jo

Another thing to keep in mind is that you'll lose more weight if you eat more often.
![]() Huh? That's right. If you eat three sensible meals, along with three healthy snacks, every single day, you're likely to lose weight. And have more energy. The trick is that your metabolism will change in response to your eating habits. If it's feast or famine, as in starving yourself until you binge, then your body will respond by trying to hang on to every calorie you take in. You won't burn as many calories in your daily life, so you will tend to lose weight much more slowly. (And remember, women really need to prime the pump for burning calories to begin with, because we've evolved to hang onto weight in order to have extra for making babies with.) What's more, getting too hungry will just make you more likely to binge. Eating a reasonable amount every two to three hours, and never getting really hungry, and exercising a healthy amount each day. That's the secret to a healthy weight. In fact, my nutritional counselor is hot on my back for not eating often enough. The thing we always here about breakfast being the most important meal of the day? That's also true -- eat a good, healthy breakfast, with some of every type of food: carbohydrate, protein, and fat. That will keep you feeling satisfied and energetic. Oh, yeah, and try to find someone to talk to about your potential ED, because trust me -- you don't want to NEED to be here, 'K?

Hi!
They had me read "Intuitive Eating" (well, some of it anyway) in my last treatment center! I'm now doing 3 meals and 3 snacks, like you said. My dietitian, too, is getting on me to eat more. Especially desserts because I am afraid of them ![]() Bjork |

Hi
I eat 5 small mini meals a day - carbs in the morning and proteins in the afternoon and evening - my doc helped me to work out my daily 'menus'. I'm a vegetarian, so I needed help to find foods that were suitable. I lost lots of weight relatively quickly - in a healthy way, which I have maintained for a year now. I exercise (can't afford, nor do I want to go to a gym, too many mirrors) at home, just simple exercises that I am building upon to help maintain the body size that I know deep down is healthy and if my body is healthy, it can only help for my mind to heal. I have had the occasional relapse and binged on desserts, donuts & chocolates, but only twice in the past year - I treat myself to chocolate if I've had 'one of those days at work' and at the weekend with some popcorn and a movie, but I share this with my daughter so it's easier. I had no choice but to get my eating habits sorted out and become a more healthy person because of my little girl who will be 3 this June - I want to be a good role model for her, I want her to enjoy a healthy diet and enjoy food and not to use food for comfort and as an instrument of control. I am her role model, that is what gives me the strength stick to my new 'diet'. When I meditate, one of the things I visualise is her... All I'm trying to say is that it is possible to eat a sensible diet and maintain a healthy body size. Throwing up and lax's will kill you, eventually. You're too precious for that road. Don't do it to yourself. Proteins fill you up, and your body will use stored fats in place of carbs, therefore burning off fats quickly and effectivley. It's all about balance tho - your body needs carbs, it needs protiens and it needs fats - good fats. P x

I am vegan. You can get protein from tofu, nuts, Quinoa (pronounced kind of like keen wa).
Here is a good website for proteins outside of meats if anyone is interested. Toward the middle starts a list of protein content of some vegan foods. Underneath that, it does have also the protein content for meats as well. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

Yea... quinoa is wheat free and gluten free too - it's a good substitute for almost any grain, in any recipe.

Why do you need to lose weight so fast? Losing weight at a sensible pace is also more likely to keep it off. Developing an eating disorder isn't the answer, although I've got one foot on that path myself.
Here's a website that might help you. Weight Loss Psychology It's a plan for losing weight that uses affirmations. I mentioned it to my T once, and she only had positive things to say about that method, which surprised me since she doesn't feel that dieting works and won't help people diet. There are articles and things there too that I thought were very interesting.

I understand ccl. Even the thought of having control of just one thing is a sweet thought, even if it is control over something destructive. (((((((((((((((((((((cottoncandylock))))))))))))))) Hang in there. It will get better.

I know how you feel. That's my reasoning too. The only times I've managed to get a boyfriend are when I'm skinny/emaciated. What's wrong with guys? Aren't there guys out there who like healthy girls? There must be.

Ditto... my weight went up and down, up and down - when I was 'fat' I was single - when I was 'thin' I seemed to always have a boyfriend.
Now I realise that it was my state of mind and how I viewed myself that generated the subconcious signals I was sending out to the universe. When I felt 'fat' there was no way I could 'get' a boyfriend / when I was 'thin' I imagined that I must look much better this way, but it's not that way for most people - It's a vicious cycle, and if you haven't got on the bike - DON'T... some people never manage to end the cycle, and those that do, struggle with it every hour of every day. Please don't make the mistake of thinking that 'skinny' equals 'attractive' - most people lose the weight and don't feel any better about themselves anyway. Chances are, you wouldn't feel any better about your looks/body either. Sensible diet and gentle exercise. I can't stress that enough!! lol p x

Hm... My weight has gone up thanks to antidepressants in the past, and those have always been the times I've gotten involved with men. When I've been thin, I've pretty much always been alone.
I think it's not the body, but the way you carry yourself, the way you project yourself. Besides, CCL, if you really are trying to lose weight in order to attract a man, that's a good time to talk seriously with a therapist about this. Most men want women who are able to stand on their own two feet -- and they can sense when it's real and when it ain't. Instead of worrying about how you look, how about trying to build up other aspects of yourself? Like, exploring your interests, so that you have something to share. Good luck.
