I have been on the waiting list since July now, I've been on waiting lists for longer, but I'm kind of really wanting to know why I'm s******g blood. I thought it was going away but I recently got sick yet again-something that seems to be a common occurance this year- and of course now that I have had a cold again it seems to have made the bleeding start again too.
I am REALLY not a fan of going to doctors, and I know I'm going to cry when I have a colonoscopy, but I also really just want to find out what has been causing this for so long. I'm pretty sure it's something like ulcerative colitis, mainly because of the bleeding, and the pain, while it's nowhere near what some people deal with, I still ended up barely able to stand for a few seconds the other day after getting back from the doctor. I just needed to vent about it, because not everyone I know exactly wants to hear about it. I don't even want to know about it really, haha. |

I hope they get you in soon. Could be serious, but could be just a hemorrhoid, which are extremely painful but not that serious.

I have had suggested a haemmeroid, do they last that long or cause an excessive amount of bleeding? I don't know too much about them. There have been other symptoms that seem to connect together with whatever I have.

The waiting has got to be hard. Hope they get you in soon.

The Skeezyks has had 2 colonoscopies so far. During the last one, they removed what was described as a "serrated polyp"... whatever that is.

I just rang the hospital to see how long I'll be waiting, and I ended up speaking to 5 people just to find out I'm on the triage list, not even a waiting list, and still have no idea how long I'll be waiting.

Wow, that's a long wait. Have you seen your regular doctor about the bleeding? Maybe he/she could order a colonoscopy and get you in sooner? Or I think they can also order a stool sample to analyze (sorry to be gross!), which I think could help them figure out where the blood is coming from. I'm assuming from your location you're in Australia? Not sure how the health system works there, but what if you showed up in the emergency room saying you had bloody stool? (and whatever other symptoms you're experiencing.) Would they see you? Just an idea... Good luck!

Hi,
I am from Australia yes. The health system here is comparatively not too bad, but like most places in the world the health system could be better. The hospital closest to me just started shutting down the emergency section- my grandparents friend ended up travelling to 3 hospitals for help after he had a heart attack. My regular doctor is the one who sent a referral off to the hospital to see a specialist. He's sent it off twice now actually and stated it was urgent (though according to the woman at the hospital I need to have patience because 'we've got people here who have cancer'). Thanks lady, I wasn't trying to put myself on a pedestal above cancer patients, I would just like to know why I **** blood 7 times yesterday and had to take a moment to get to my front door and sat for 5 minutes cussing every word under the sun because I felt like I was getting stabbed from the inside. If I get told I've got to wait another 6 months I might just fork out a few hundred dollars for the colonoscopy. |

Get a colonoscopy as soon as possible even if you yourself have to pay. Your symptoms are indication that you should not wait. I don't mean to scare you but the sooner you get in the better off you will be...no matter what. I feel someone really needs to tell you this isn't a time to fool around. Don't wait. Be pro-active. I wish I had told my sister this when she complained of rectal bleeding. She did not have a colonoscopy. Fast forward ten years. She's dead from colon cancer. I am so sorry to be blunt but I feel you need to be told the life you save could be your own. Good luck. Pick up the phone and make an appointment for a colonscopy. NOW.

There are places that would likely get me in sooner, but I would need to pay a lot of money for it. For me to get it done for free I need to go to a hospital, which is why I've been put on the waiting list.

I think that perhaps you are afraid and that is why you are trying to self-diagnose. And believe me, I understand, and I think that is a very normal reaction. However, dear friend, I would like to tell you something. If what you have is serious the sooner you get in for tests the better chances for a positive outcome. I am going to once again be very blunt. If caught early, the treatment for colon cancer has a very high success rate. That is the best news about this type of cancer. My sister had early symptoms such as bleeding but not much else. She also had lupus and so was focused more on that. If I knew then what I know now I would have bodily carried her in for a colonoscopy. Her colon cancer did not show up for ten more years but she never in that time had a colonoscopy. And she was a nurse! It was a terrible lack of responsibility on her part and as a result our family lost her early and we are still grieving. I don't know about your health care system. Stay an on the waiting list and also become a squeaky wheel. Get on the phone and call whoever you can and relay information about the bleeding. Please remember that you are not a doctor and cannot self-diagnose. I think what you are missing is someone in your life to stay with you on this and make sure you get in for a colonoscopy as soon as possible. I am so glad you have come to Psych Central for support. Please find out what you can do to define your situation as URGENT. You need to get in for a colonoscopy as soon as possible. Please stay on this. I will check back with you. ![]()

I'm not trying to self diagnose at all, my doctor has suggested IBD quite a while ago and that is why he sent me off to get looked at.

A medication called a stool softener, NOT a laxative, makes your poops easier to pass, allowing a hemorrhoid to heal. And you should alter your diet to not be constipated. There are two kinds of hemorrhoids, one is like a vein bubble; sometimes they poke out and you can push them back in. See medicine, below. The other is called a fissure, its like a longish crack - this one usually hurts worse. Like it can wake you up at night throbbing. Medicine: 1. Soak your (clean) butt in a warm bath. 2. Clean your butt with Tucks or other wipes. It might sting! 3. There are over the counter suppositories and creams. I always apply a little cream to the top of the suppository, i dont know how it would go in otherwise! Colonoscopy: if you do have hemorrhoids, the "cleanout" process to prepare is gonna hurt like heck. My aunt had to have surgery on her butt afterwards because of her hemorhoidds, but her colon was fine! So if i were you, i would try to "baby" my hemorrhoids as much as possible in the meantime and see if that helps. It cant hurt. Good luck! |

Hi. Have you heard of 7cups. It's a platform which is free and anonymous where you can talk to trained listeners about the things you are facing. There are various resources too which you can browse on the webpage that may help. You may want to give it a try.

Wow, what a long wait! It's likely hemmorhoids (however it's spelled) as was in my case, but I worried, too. I assume it's red blood. Do you have pain in the rectal area? (I sound like a nosy nurse). That usually goes along with the blood vessel problem. I had a rectal fissure one time, too (in college). That really hurt.
Yeah, watch for the signs of cancer. But would any of them get you a colonoscopy earlier? I hope so! ![]() |
