Avocados are often called a "super food." When I go grocery shopping, I always pick up one avocado. I only get one because avocados go from unripe to rotten very quickly. They have a high fat content, but it's a good kind of fat.

The British are encouraged to eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetable per day. People often say to eat a rainbow of colors. People are now speaking out against "ultra-processed" foods as being particularly bad for your health. Whole foods are considered good - those that are eaten as close to the original form as possible, ie with minimal processing. For example, scrambled eggs and a glass of milk - good. Ice cream - bad.

lol 😂 I grew up with the food pyramid which was replaced with “my plate”, biggest serving vegetable, then grain, fruits and protein with a circle of dairy. No processed food. The key is balancing the food so you get proper nutrients.

I think americans were given the same advice, except they dont repeat it constantly like the british do. Its on every "big and little eaters" tv show at least once every five minutes, i swear. I mean, they say it the way we say "three square meals". It even shows up in detective shows, "oh getting your five a day in, eh?" Its ubiquitous!!!

I think I've improved since posting this thread. I eat string cheese and apple slices for snacks and I've mostly cut out coffee. I've upped my water intake a ton. I eat smoothie and acai bowls and tuna pouches and protein shakes and Icelandic yogurts. Some days are better then others but I'm trying more then I was before.

That's good. It's not really "this one food will improve your health" but important to get a variety (like said: the less processed the better) in to cover your bases.

I’d say definitely fruits and veggies for me. Less processed food.

Every time I read that the Mediterranean diet comes out top for best health outcomes. Again it’s fresh veg, fruit, lean protein, oily fish. Less processed food. Learning to cook is imo one of the best things anyone can do for their health.

I think stepping in the right direction is the best way to go, and nothing wrong with a treat now and then.

I work with a military unit and guys have to stay fit. Someone mentioned a diet that interested me. Don't eat the white stuff. If it is white, don't bite. It is basically a way to reduce calories by limiting carbohydrates. No rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, no candy. Stay away from low fat because that is going to be high sugar. Dinner may consist of a chicken breast or fish and two veggies. Maybe broccoli and asparagus or Lima beans or green beans. What I discovered is what makes you hungry for your next meal, is your last meal. If you control your blood sugar, you don't get so hungry for your next meal. In 4 months, I lost 38 lbs without being hungry. And while I do like (love) the white stuff, I can honestly say I didn't crave or miss it because my blood sugar wasn't on a roller coaster. I would wake in the am, make a tall glass of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of meta mucil. I wouldn't get hungry until early afternoon. When I had my annual blood work, my primary care doctor asked me to come back for an additional test. He couldn't figure out what was going on because skipping the carbs had a drastic (and positive) effect on my approach to pre diabetes numbers. My older and younger brother died after below knee amputation due to type 2. I don't want to go that route.

Berries have a lot of antioxidants which are good for you. I think I saw you posted that you got stuff for smoothie bowls lately. Berries are good in those too

Yogurt is a huge help for me because I don't like breakfast foods. Yogurt helps with digestion so that is an added benefit.

Just be aware that there is such a thing as too much fluid intake. Celebrity, Brook Shields, found that out when she collapsed due to excessive water intake. It had diluted her electrolytes to a dangerously low level. All you have to do is observe urine color. If it is light yellow, you're properly hydrated. If it is almost clear, you are over-hydrated.

Being over-hydrated can increases the workload on the heart. It can cause fluid backup in the lungs. It can dilute stomach acid, making digestion slower and less efficient. It can dilute the blood, leading to the blood having inadequate levels of sodium (hyponatremia) and lowered relative levels of other electrolytes. That can cause collapse or convulsions.

Water is not the only thing that will hydrate you. All fluids due that. You just want to avoid sugary drinks. Sometimes a glass of milk is a better choice than a glass of water.
