you don't have to give your real name here but i would like others thoughts on it..
my first name traces back to a land in ancient history... Darel... the land contains two factions.. always at war with outsiders.. to this day, neither have lost... (guess they haven't been fighting each other? my last name (undisclosed) translates to Turner in English... one who turns things... I was often jealous/envious when someone i knew had a cooler name than me, but growing up, i've found strength in this small? piece of my existence... |

Hmmm... interesting question! Here goes my answer.
The name I was given at birth is now dead to me. I stopped going by it some 50 yrs ago. Got tired of everyone going "HUH??" when I told them what my name was. I grew to hate that name and even more so in my later years. My girl friend, at the time, helped me think up a new one. She claims that the boyfriend of the month's last name could be translated into "Tomi". I have no clue nor do I care. I liked the name. I went through different spellings of it throughout the years: Tommi, Tomie, whatever came to mind that year. LOL About 20 yrs ago, when I went through intensive regression therapy, I saw three facets of me at different ages; 3, 8 and 14. The 3 and 8 yrs old still had remnants of the old name. The 14 yr old, who was the protector, held the name of Renee. It means "reborn." I felt that I had been reborn during the regression therapy and I added Renee as a middle name. I hadn't had one before. I've done the name change legally. I can't imagine having any other name... except SeptMorn. Sometimes, I think of myself as that. My first birth was on a Sept. morning. ![]()

I was named after a great aunt and recently figured out that she was probably named after her great grandmother. Her mother's mother died when her mother was born and the Civil War showed up so her mother's father rode off (he was Calvary :-) to be in it. I surmise my great grandmother was left as a baby with her maternal grandmother who my great aunt was then named after.
Ah, but why was I named after this great aunt? She and my grandmother were very close and my great aunt had a son who was only a couple months older than my mother and, according to my second cousin :-) my mother and her cousin were very fond of one another. I figure my mother must have liked her aunt also. My mother was named after her mother who was named after her father so I don't think they wanted to bestow that name on me too :-)

My first name, Angela, obviously means angel or messenger of god.
My middle name, Marie, means bitter. And my last name... we aren't really sure of the origin. It could be either Chippewa (Native American), or my dad for some reason thinks Italian (we don't have any Italian blood that I'm aware of, though??), or maybe French? T once said that she read somewhere that my last name means "the people" So, if what T read about my last name is true, then I must either be a bitter angel person, or an angel/messenger from god among bitter people? Oooh, or maybe I'm an angel of bitterness to makes "the people" bitter? lol ![]()

provacative... i like the way you apply historical meaning to your current endeavor... it may matter? it also contains (in my view, my personal caution to myself) the elements which make it ripe for delusions...
but i think if a way is found to turn those elements into a positive current, one may recieve enlightenments that those whom have never done so otherwise may not discover... i like the combined meanings of my name (obviously) or i wouldn't have posted this... even my middle name has special meaning... i brought this topic up because i think for some of us there is empowering knowledge, simply in the name we have recieved or given to ourself... it was by accident i discovered the history of 'Darel'... and perhaps, there is still more to discover... ? thanks to All who've replied... please stop thinking when it hurts, at least for awhile, ok? then re-visit it when you're strength rebuilds... I stopped going by my real first name when I was 8, I can't remember why I chose my new name.
My middle name is Hyène... means Hyena in French. I didn't used to have a middle name, but I legally added it when I was old enough, it was always my nickname in highschool, and my favourite animal. And my last name was my half-brother's middle name: when I started living with him I didn't want to keep my old last name, but I didn't want his last name, so I took his middle name. |

My mother chose my real name from a book, simply because she liked it. If I'm not mistaken, I saw a meaning somewhere or another that says it means "princess" or "lady" ....... uh - definitely not me! And most certainly not why my mother chose it.
My maiden surname was apparently of Dutch descent although nobody knows for sure.

i especially like your board name... you know why, but for another reason not to be disclosed at this time... and you were born a Sunday... i think thats cool...
i think the history of your names and naming is very interesting to think about... you are someone who worked not only to change the inner image, but went further by changing all written expressions of yourself... i think that works it way deeply into your interior... And Leggewood repeaets the same but for different reasons... reclaiming and renaming himself... re-creating his personal vision of himself.... cool... Perna: i gotta admit, i got lost... my own family likes to mix me up when i'm trying to understand relations.. they get a great kick out of it and its great to hear them laugh... you are an interesting person indeed... i love the music you bring to PC, the knowledge... |

BPD: the two names in your name are identical to two females in my family... not a historical connection per se, but there is created a bonding simply by common names between individuals at times... making connections where there are no other...
Dragon... i presume you have a rich and interesting family history... i found a new pride in my origin family recently... its there in the history, the trials, tribulations, survival story of the Genes in my body... we all have it... we are all survivors.. the strongest current representation of the biology of humans... otherwise... we would not be alive... |

It was probably the last time I saw my sperm donor that I called him Uncle Dad. He didn't think it was funny. It turns out that my mom's oldest sister, when she married, married a man that was raising a couple of his nephews. My SD was one of them. My mom knew him as her cousin by marriage. After the SD's first wife died, my mom began seeing him and they married. I was born from that union.
It seems DH is the only one bothered by it. LOL He's asked me quite a few times to explain my family to him. ![]() No gallantry or much of anything interesting there... All I know of my mom's background is her mother. Like I said... that name is dead to me. Well... except that my maiden name gives a position in royalty. My mom told me it was English but later, a half sister told me it was Scotish. No wonder bagpipes move me to tears! I always wished that someone had picked up on it and called me by that, but... no such luck. Oh, well. ![]()

Interesting!
Well, my first name is Christina, which is Greek for "Annointed, follower of Christ". Or the feminine form of Christ. Or "Christ bearer" ... you get the picture. My middle name is Elizabeth, which is Hebrew for "God's Oath". I've also heard Elizabeth meaning "gift from God" or "consecrated from God". ... sad thing is, my family isn't *that* religious. I think they just picked my name because it sounds pretty. Family tradition states (from my grandmother, who was eldest daughter), and then passed down to my mom (eldest daughter), to me (eldest daughter) ... that my eldest daughter's middle name should be Elizabeth. Not that I mind, because it's a beautiful name. As for my last name... well, on either side of my family they're either Scottish/Irish or English. Nothing special to the meanings either.

a gal i know picked up a piece of legal mail of mine and giggled at the name on it, my legal first name... god knows why my parents put the names in a different order than they planned to use. But i am very very proud of my first name.. it was my grandmother's name and she had a truly difficult life. She was a british home child during the first war. She came here on a ship, alone at the age of 10. She was farmed out basically to do work for farm families. Apparently they did not treat her well.

<font color="purple">My name is Chloe, it is a greek name and it means verdant of blooming. I've never been that fond of the name itself, but the meaning I think is pretty. My mom named me that because some star named her kid that, and she thought that it sounded pretty (at least she didn't name me apple!)
My middle name, Danielle, (for I have no maiden name) is the french feminine form of the name Daniel, who was a biblical prophet (and is hebrew for "God is my Judge" I think this was a comprimise between my mother and father, as she wanted my middle name to be paige, and he wanted my middle name to be Michelle) My last name? Oh, it's just the good ol' generic Williams. And it's meaning is "god of peace" ![]() |

I had a plain old common name growing up. My MOther told me that there was a movie star named Debbie Reynolds & everyone was naming their kids Debbie at the time I was born (1953). She picked the base name Deborah spelling from the bible.
I hated growing up in school with 5 other kids with the same name, so I decided that I would research a name for my daughter & she would not be stuck having the same name as everyone else because I wanted her to be an individual. I had heard a name in one of my college classes "Chandra". That was such a beautiful sound, so I looked into the meaning. Our family had a mans name that was commonly used of RAY(mond), & the famale spelling was Rae. In putting the meanings together, the complete meaning of her name is "brighter than a shining star". I was so excited when the name came together with such a beautiful meaning & my daughter even though at first she struggled with the name, because very proud of it & after getting continual complements on how beautiful her name was, she calmed down about having a different name. After growing up with a common name, I felt good about coming up with a beautiful name for my daughter. Debbie

Right on Eskie!!! That's great addition to the thread
![]() after my post last night i wanted to go back and add a little more, thanks for the opportunity... what i've learned from this: a lazy assesment shows me names are important to many people, that names have special meanings and are a bigger part of our identities than simply the word we call ourselves... ive learned that some have had emotional issues related to the name they are legally required to possess... ive learned that one can legally change their life simply by changing their own name as it relates to self-image... ive seen we can name ourselves as well as be named by others with intention to harm, as well as do harm unintentionally with the names we use or recieve, given to ourselves and/or others... ive learned there is really a lot in a name... Thanks All! |

I have never liked my name. My generation had lots of Garys. A few years ago my dad told me that the reason I was named Gary was that is what he always wished his name was. I am glad I am not a junior. My name would have been Roy, and that is worse than Gary.
My middle name, Evans, is a common Welsh last name, which was my grandfather's mother's maiden name. I am the third generation with that middle name. Good thing I never had a son, or I probably would have stuck him with it, too. My last name is one of the ten-or-so most common last names in the English language. Some of my ancestors had unusual names. My dad had an Uncle Aylmer and an Aunt Letra. My paternal grandmother was Eryl. Her father was Chrisostomo, but called Tomo.
