...cold weather make you feel melancholy or as if something is missing?
It's winter outside. Had the doors and windows open for a while to air out the place but when it started getting cool, there was a strong urge to run and close up everything real quick and maybe even hide under my blankie. As I was closing up, I wondered what I was protecting against. It wasn't just the cold. If I had a fireplace, I'd light a great big fire in it. Even so, there's still something missing and I can't put my finger on it. I'm getting flashed of my childhood of when my mother would close everything up but whatever is missing now, wasn't missing then. ... As I look at that scene from my childhood, there was a light then that isn't here now... even if I turn all the lights on. I don't know, but the tears have started and I can't figure that out, either. ![]()

cold weather makes me feel like nesting. I'd light a fire too if I had one. There is a woodstove in the garage and it's wonderful when it's lit but it's really cold in the gargage. Catch 22 there. I would have to go outside in the cold in order to enjoy the fire.
As to the nesting I feel, I don't have anyone to nest with. I think that's what is missing for me. Closing up the house for winter and wanting to snuggle up to another warm body but having none. That sucks. I don't know what is missing for you september. If I did, I'd find one and send it over to make you smile.

Oh Sept.
I am so sorry that you're feeling this way. I know what you mean about something missing. That's what it was like when I was a child. It's a very sad place to be and I wish I could come and give you 3d (((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))). If I knew what was missing, I'd walk a thousand miles barefoot across hot coals to find it and place it at your door. You're so wonderful and I feel so bad that you're feeling so down, you've really helped me. Wish I could help you. Take Care, Kimberly. |

No, it doesn't make me feel like something's missing, but I don't like it when I'm cold. My hands and feet becomes like blocks of ice. Sometimes I think back to bright days, cold as stone, and flannel shirts and thick socks, and a teapot spiked with peach brandy. Then I remember that I can't drink alcohol anymore, and the nostalgia looses it lustre.

Oh yes, big time! There are tangible links to me between being cold and being depressed. One winter when I was trying to cut costs by not turning the heat up, and I spent almost all my time in bed just trying to warm up. Another when our heater wasn't working, and there were other things going on too, but I was so miserable I really wanted to die and was making plans to. The cold keeps me from wanting to get out of bed in the morning, or venture out of the house for any reason. I dread it. I sometimes literally can't tell the difference between being cold and being depressed. I apply the same strategy - first try putting on 30 million layers of clothes, and then if that isn't enough, go to bed and stay there. Light makes a difference too. Lately, I can't make it light enough in my house. I turn on every light, and it's still too dark. So I light a bunch of candles too. The candles help. I have seasonal affective disorder, but I'm not getting up early enough to do my light therapy. Got it in twice this week and I know I won't over the weekend because I just barely make it to work. But when I do get in front of the light box, I could just stay there all day. I don't like it when my time is up and I have to stop.

"Nesting." That seems to fit. Maybe it's that my nesting days are over since the nest is empty and pappa bird, well... he's not even here. If he was, he'd be in his bedroom reading completely oblivious to everything else.

Have you tried peach tea? We used to be into it pretty much and then we moved out to the country and all those niceties went out the window.

{{{{{{{{{{{{Wendy}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Today for sure I could put depression and cold together. About six years ago, I was living with my best friend and up in the hills it gets a whole lot colder than it does here by the beach. For some reason, she would never turn on the heater. She said she used the oven but I swear I never saw her turn it on. When I couldn't stand the cold anymore, I'd turn the oven on on low and open the door. It wasn't 15 minutes later that she'd get up and turn it off. ARGH! She never said anything to me, she'd just turn it off! I'd have to go to bed to get warm but my feet were always chunks of ice. At the time, I was becoming more and more depressed because I needed a home of my own. Maybe I'm a bit depressed, too. Nooooooo... I don't wanna be!

Tomi,
I don't know what it is sweetie, but this type of weather makes me want to run and hide too. Just curl up under a blanket and escape the world. It's the most miserable time for me, and for you too I see. Have you found anything that helps? Working on a hobby, or something? That helps me a bit. I also like to cook. The kids like it when I get like this cause that means they're getting lots of cookies ![]() I have a fireplace and you're welcome to come over and share mine anytime. I'll even make some eggnog or something yummy to drink. Sorry you're feeling bad, I'd kick that demon in it's butt for you if I could! Lots of love, Greg |

Aw, man! I'm turning green with envy! Maybe if I take off right now, I'll make it to your place by tonight, eh? Is it cold enough up there for a fire in the fireplace? I'll bet it's as cold and damp as it is here!
![]() Been working on the grandkids Halloween costumes and I started preparations for finishing the tile work on my kitchen counters, so I've been keeping busy. I'm okay during the day. It's just when it starts getting too cold to have the doors and windows open that the feeling has hit me. When I flash back on my childhood, I can almost hear my mom say something I can't remember. It feels like it could be "It's time to..." but I don't know what the rest is. "To gather up"? To "withdraw"? It's weird. Maybe tonight I'll figure it out. ![]() What kind of cookies are we making tonight? ![]()

I hate winter! But then again, I grew up in Texas! I moved to the midwest when I was 19, and I cried the first time it snowed! LOL! I have gotten more used to it, but I still don't like it!

Sorry to get waaaaaaaaay off topic, but every time I look at the title, "Does the...", my head fills in the words "...lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight." I have *NO* idea why that little ditty keeps popping in my head!
As far as the cold, I often go into hibernation mode...and being cold for a long time can bring on depression. I think for me, it's almost like a phyical thing...seems like my whole body slows down. The other thing is, I have real issues with light, so it's hard for me to really separate what happens when I'm cold from my SAD. But I do know that when there is snow on the ground, and everything is so bright from the reflection of the sun on the snow, I feel better, even though it's really cold. So it's probably more light than cold with me.

![]() ![]() Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight? ![]() ![]() LONNIE DONEGAN Oh me, oh my, oh you Whatever shall I do? Hallelujah The question is peculiar I'd give a lot of dough if only I could know The answer to my question, is it yes or is it no? Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? If your mother says don't chew it, do you swallow it in spite? Can you catch it on your tonsils, can you heave it left and right? Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? Here's comes the blushing bride The groom is by her side Up to the altar Just as steady as Gibraltar. Ah, the groom has got the ring And it's such a pretty thing. But as he slips it on her finger the choir begins to sing Does ... your ... chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? If your mother says don't chew it, do you swallow it in spite? Can you catch it on your tonsils, can you heave it left and right? Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? Now the nation rises one To send their honest son Up to the White House Yea, the nation's only White House To voice their discontent Unto the president Upon the burning question which has swept the continent: If tin whistles are made of tin, whadda they make fog horns out of? Boom, boom! Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? If your mother says don't chew it, do you swallow it in spite? Can you catch it on your tonsils, can you heave it left and right? Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night? On the bedpost overnight (I need ya' and I love ya' and I wanna' hold you tight. A-Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday night.) On the bedpost overnight (A dollar is a dollar, and a dime is a dime He'd sing another chorus, but he hasn't got the time) On the bedpost overnight

I grew up in East Texas. When we did get snow, which was a rarity, it usually melted before it even hit the ground! People would freak out if they thought we would get snow. They all go to the store and stock up on bottled water and duct tape! LOL! I might be exaggerating a little, but not much!
I can't stand the intense heat either (anything above 90 degrees!) Why can't I live somewhere where it is Spring year round!?! And Sleepy ... the trade is tempting ... but that would mean I would have to go back to Texas! ![]() (Nothing good ever came out of Texas while I was there ... and the many generations before me. ![]()

yeah. YOU KNOW WHAT? I thought I already posted here... but I don't see it duh me.
I couldn't go out during winter in MO that last year... kinda makes working tough heheheh but to stay inside, and watch the snow ahhhh I love the warm tropical days here in FL... the gentle breezes (no, not hurricanes!) and the soft sunlight esp in the morns and eves... drier air now too... it isn't a whole lot of fun during the holidays though... I try to at least go to central Fl for that LOL where it gets "cold" like maybe in 50s at night lol but it's great for being outside then again, I keep my a/c in the house down to about 69... my dog and I like it that way... and it really feels good after being outside for a while!
