Is there anywhere ... where u might get questioned about what u have ...

So Ima going to KL (Malaysia) for work. I'm travelling with a workmate, I reeeeeally don't want my s*hit pulled out for any reason ... ya dig ...

Sounds dumb but when I came back from Europe years ago I got searched cos I was a 21 year old female and had come via Bangkok.

Is it ok to skip prozac for a week and a couple of days I really dont wanna take it with me!!!!!

heh it's Asia - they would probably empty out the capsules given the current rep of south pacific travellers and illegal drugs.

One of my service technicians ran into this same issue when travelling to Japan. All they do is read the pill bottles, open them to make sure all the pills are the same, and put them back in your bag.

There are more one than Customs agent when you board/land from a flight. Try to get in a different line than your co-worker so you can keep you "secret taking meds overseas" intact.

When you have to fill out the forms that ask if you have any drugs etc, make sure you write that it is for health problems. Prozac is a really common medication now, with prescription drugs the concern is whether you are bringing in a medication that isn't available in that country. It should go smoothly, you could also ask one of the customs agents standing around what you should put down on the form. And just in case I wold also put extra in your suitcase.

Thanks taking meds overseas

But it seems easier to go a week without than go through all that fuss - as I said, I don't want any chance of my colleague noticing (for professional reasons).

I remember from a long time ago fayerody mentioning a female friend of hers hiding joints in cardboard tampon applicators....

Maybe you could do the same with your meds??? Buy some cheap dollar-store brand, save the wrapper and *presto* overseas medication concealment! (just goin' out on a limb here...)

It's not good to go off your meds cold turkey, even just for a week or so. It may screw you up even more than the jet lag!

Lar's wagging his right index finger at you. I'd rather hear that you hid two pills somewhere in your socks than that you went without your meds during travel. Bad combo, no meds, much travel. Travel is stressful. Business travel more so.

Last time I flew home after a trip, I had so much coin in a pocket in my carryon that they took me aside to "individually examine" the contents of my bag. It never occurred to me that I might have had a knife or gun hidden behind the change. But it occurred to them, and they were not amused.

I can't tell you what to do, but I wouldn't make the same choice that you are.

1. In my experience, customs inspections are as discreet as circumstances allow, but I have never travelled to Malaysia.

2. Going into withdrawals during a business trip does not sound like a good plan, on its face.

3. I'd simply imagine that every one of my fellow travellers was taking antipsychotics, and thus my antidepressant was nought but a piffle.

4. I travel with scheduled narcotics. It's not a biggie.

I don't even want to have to explain why I was taken aside if I am taken aside. So I don't really feel I have a choice.

I had the same issue when I had a lot of english pound coins, they thought it was something large and metal.

The issue really arises because a lot of Australians have recently been snapped for drug issues (Bali etc) and so they are probably keeping an eye on pretty much everyone from our part of the world.

Why not ring or email the Australian consulate in Penang first. That way, you can cover your ****

Honestly -- I've traveled with meds, and there was NOTHING said. No search, no questions, nothing beyond checking that the label on the bottle matched in a general way what I claimed on my form.

Now, it's probably different for something like Adderall or Dexedrine, but for Prozac? My guess is that no one will notice.

And I'm with Larry on this, although I'm not wagging a finger because mine are too busy typing -- don't skip meds for a week. Just do what you can to be discreet. Clear the pound coins from your purse, so that you don't attract notice, put the Prozac in instead (I'm sure they can be used as currency in some places ;-P) and I'm sure things will be fine. If you're still worried, only take 8 capsules with you, and I'm sure the Customs guys will be discreet, too.

Good luck and good travel.

hehehe that's what I was thinking... tape a few to the inside of socks or other clothing... at the back of the buttons on a blouse if you fear them showing on the scan...

what a good question DR Unk.... I hope you have a smooth trip!

I'm not sure if I would try to sneak them past security. (This is the way that children think, Trying to see what they can get away with) Except when you are an adult you go to jail for trying to sneak drugs into another country.....lol
I would get a prescription from your doc and fill it when you get there(pharmacies there are the same as here) and then you are perfectly legal. Good luck my friend.

I would think if you have it in the prescription bottle as you got it at the pharmacy there shouldn't be any question.
My husband has been traveling on business for years, never once was his meds questioned or confiscated, in Europe.
The best thing is to ask the prescribing physician about this, see what he says then follow through with his advice.
Maybe even a letter of clearance written by him may help?
Lots of luck with this and your travels. taking meds overseas

np Larry. I have had this problem when I go on vacation to Mexico. The pharmacies there are good to fill just about any prescription that you hand them.

DSF - ok, so you don't want your colleague to know that you take prozac. Have you ever been with someone who has stopped their meds cold-turkey? There is a good chance that you will become REALLY difficult to be around -- wouldn't that be far worse than taking a chance that customs would ignore your pills?

It's just prozac. I'm really not sure I understand the work environment you're in. Every psychologist I've ever had has been open about meds they've tried themselves. I'm a little taken aback that you're perpetuating the mental health stigma yet are planning to "help" people who need meds just to get through the day. But I'm willing to say that I just don't understand (and you certainly don't need to explain it to me -- I'm just mentioning all of this as food for thought for you).

No no I do research for an international research company ... we are at the asia-pacific qual research training school at the moment which is reason for the trip ...i have a phd in psychology but that wasn't the clinical side it was the criminal justice psychology side.

yea its all fine i didnt take anything with me but im distracted as anything with all the shopping and stuff and tomorrow the four days of training start. so will be too busy to be meh taking meds overseas its ok if i crash when i get home.

food is good and shopping is even better!!!

lmo to be honest i am really serious about my career and if you seem like ur unstable its not really the best image to project when you want promotions etc. for me i think its best to keep it quiet whether that is feeding the stigma or not ...

just jumped online to clear emails. thank you for all the responses it is interesting to see how other people feel about this sort of situation.

Ok - glad it worked out!

I'm serious about my career, too, and have been fortunate to have achieved a good deal of success. I speak from experience when I say that worrying about what your colleagues think is more of a detriment than it is a benefit. Taking prozac does not equate to instability, at least not in my environment.

But, DSF, I am certainly not trying to tell you what to do or change your beliefs. I just want to offer some relief that it certainly won't be the end of the world if someone finds out. Ok?

Glad to hear you're doing well over there. I can honestly say that I'm green with envy.... taking meds overseas
