Has anyone had luck with a low dose of Remeron (15-30mg) for anxiety/depression? The only other med I take is Seroquel (50-100mg) at night to help me sleep. I really need something to help me with this depression.

Thanks!

Miss U - I really have not seen anyone who has used successfully Remeron™ (mirtazapine) as their primary antidepressant. Where I practice as a pharmacist I see it used as an add-on antidepressant for those who have had a partial response to the SSRIs. The only instances where I see it used by itself is when it is used as a sleeping pill; but you are probably using the Seroquel™ (quetiapine) to aid in falling asleep.

Have you tried any other antidepressants, and if so, which ones. - Cam

sundance - A funny thing with Remeron™ (mirtazapine) is that the higher the dose the less the drowsiness, as the anticholinergic effects of the drug (causing the drowsiness) are overwhelmed by nervous system activation in another part of the brain.

It does take two to three months, but the body does (more or less) adjust to the drowsiness over time. Hang in there, daily doses usually run from 30mg to 60mg daily, depending on response. Perhaps ask your doc if you might benefit from another 15mg increase in dose. - Cam

Hi Cam,

That's so sad that you haven't seen a good response from Remeron alone. I'm hoping that I'll be in the minority, then, who actually does benefit from it. Remeron Fingers crossed.

I can't tolerate any of the SSRIs because they cause my blood pressure to sky rocket. Wellbutrin makes my heart rate too fast. Effexor made me tooooo sleepy, but I wouldn't think of giving it a second try because everyone seems to have such a difficult time coming off of it. Yikes! And Serzone (which is "outlawed" lol here in Canada) made me not be able to walk straight!!!

I'm at 30mg of Remeron now. I take it at bedtime with my Seroquel. I can't say that I've noticed any difference in my depression, but I've only been taking for 4 days so far. I used to take 60mg before, but had to quit due to a horrible rash!!! But I felt better at that dose. Darn! Remeron

I also have Gabapentin. Do you think the two might work well together? I've only been using the Gabapentin irregularly. Have you heard of anyone taking Remeron and Gaba together with good results?

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me. Remeron

Cam, I'm not sure if this was a repsonse to me or Miss_understood... But i'll answer anyhow.

For me the higher dose I went the less side effects I got. My psychiarist told me usually when you go up with this the side effects are less, and it's true in my case.

The only problem that I still have problems with is getting up, I feel so tired...... But I've been trying to get up earlier, because I have to do my lightbox in the mornings now.

I've been on 15mg, than went up to 30mg, and i'm better on the higher dose.

I was told that it took up to 6 weeks to start working, i've been on it about 6 months now, maybe less.

Not going to lower it because this is fine. Depression is setting in so i don't know if she will put the dose higher or not we'll see.
