That's okay. I understand checks. I don't know how to balance a checkbook and I also don't need to right now. Telling me about it would be a waste of time right now because it will just overwhelm me and I actually do struggle with reading for odd reasons I don't understand. I read lines out of order and can't get myself to actually focus on the meaning of what people are saying without getting distracted by the shape of the paragraph of the spaces in between lines. I would need pictures.

On a totally separate note, if anyone has any clue what my issues with reading are just based on what I wrote out it and considering my ADHD, please let me know |

On the larger forum - there are areas for school related issues and ADD/ADHD where you might find people with information on the reading issue.

I don't think Lola was trying to attack anyone here! I have refrained from posting on this thread for a long time because I have been feeling the same as Lola and probably many others. The thread is not at all about how a clients suicide would affect their t granted it started that way but slowly changed into something else.
I am struggling to find any supportive words as any advice or help is met with excuses. What people are trying to tell you op is that we all have choices in life and we shouldn't let anyone have a hold over us as long as we are old enough to do something about it. I feel people are spoon feeding you now and that doesn't help you become empowered or want to change. There are people on here going through some terrible times who struggle with Sui ideation daily, they reach out for help and post a thread and maybe get one reply. This breaks my heart. I am not saying don't post or downplaying your situation but I just don't understand the logic. |

I have dyslexia which is pretty severe when it comes to numbers. The number 8 has always been my favorite because it always looks the same. Even with numbers that twist and swim, I learned to balance a checkbook and pay bills. I have to cover the numbers with my finger so I only see one number at time. It is relatively slow and laborious, but do-able. Maybe you could try covering each line or putting a ruler under the line you are reading.
Nowadays you don't even have to write anything down for your checking account. Look online: the bank does your checkbook for you. Last edited by Anonymous37917; Aug 25, 2013 at 02:46 PM. |

That's what I was gonna say - a checkbook is for before they invented computers. Life is different now - or can be.

I know this thread is about so much more but the only thing i can positively contribute is the financial knowledge thing....
I remember when I got married at 21 how little about real life like credit cards and savings and mortgages and credit scores my H and I knew... But we learned it as we went along. I know my son didnt have any money education in school but when i was in school we did a little side thing for a semester where you were assigned a job and salary and then we had to pick housing and stuff with a budget and then we had to remember to pay bills and keep a check register and balance a checkbook for a whole semester in the 6th grade. Lots of kids were bankrupt and homeless before the end of semester because they failed to budget before picking out a house. Its a shame schools send kids odd in the world with calculus but little financial education. That being said, you can learn it as you go. If you sign up for a bank acct you google or ehow how to keep a register... How to reconcile an acct? I just want you to realize us old people in our 40s didnt have it all figured out at 20 and neither do you.... If you live your life thinking you cant do something until you know how to do something... You will never do new things... Life is about the experience of doing not at doing everything perfectly... When you live with controlling critizing voices (parents or however) you think you have to do it all right the first time.... I learned a lot of things from other people at college (and it wasnt about partying)...my roommate talked me through using a tampon cause my mother and sisters taught me nothing... my senior mentor taught me so much about being independent and winging it.... So I hope you will find others to mentor you at college as well.... You dont have to be perfect to do things....wish I knew that alot earlier in life |

Can we just meet me where I am? My parents will be mostly out of the picture in 8 days. I'll need to settle myself emotionally and then I can consider other options. You guys are talking about completely rewiring and changing my life when I'm too scared to walk upstairs and get food before it is dark out. I appreciate that all of you have gone through this and figured out how to make your life work and are willing to reach out and help me figure things out financially. I'm not there yet and talking about it right now is completely stressing me out. I have to just survive before I can talk about money and math. I'm not making excuses. I've told you my rationale behind not living on my own. I've told you what I'm scared of and what I believe. I know that being afraid isn't a good reason to not get a job, but I'm over 700 miles away from where I would be applying to get a job. I also don't think I agree with you guys that my best option is to go financially independent at this particular moment. My best option is to use my parents' money and minimize the amount of time I have to spend with them. I can do a week or two and my mom is usually actually quite civil with me when I am only here for a week or a few days. Doing that triggers an emotional reaction of fear, but it doesn't trigger sui. If I can talk them into putting me on their car insurance which I have made good progress with, that will make it even easier. I have so much respect for people who managed to make living miniscule amounts of money work, but I don't have to do that. I can use the time during the school years to work on my psychological well being and my trade and I will come out of it with absolutely zero debt. It's also not like they control me year round. It is really only when I am here. They don't even remember to call me every week. Also, saying that I am not empowered because I am not financially independent is a little weird to me. What isn't empowered about using your parents for their money and health insurance? I'm letting them control what I do just a little bit to play their game and maximize the amount of financial assistance I get from them. At the end of the day, they are pouring money into someone who is going to walk away and block their number when they call as soon as I get a real job. I'm not just blindly following their lead. I have a plan. There are serious problems with it, but I like it better than worrying about if I will be able to feed myself or not. |

I continue to maintain that you demonstrate resilience, spirit, and personal effectiveness in having formulated your plans for dealing with your parents, in having carried those plans out as much as you judge appropriate at this time, in finding ways to cope with sui thoughts, and in speaking your mind and defending yourself on this thread.
These are strengths to value, cultivate, and build on when you are at school. |
