I am so, so lucky. My T charges about $160USD a session but he charges me $60. My ins reimburses me $30 of that (although it's been 3 months since I've received a check from them, grrr.) Without my T working with me I could never in a million years afford to go. He's outside my network and I go once a week. I could not afford $640/month and get reimbursed so little. My heart is filled with gratitude.

I am incredibly lucky too. Mine charges about $200 per hour full whack (converted from British pounds) and at the moment I pay nothing, or approximately $30 a week when I can afford it, and the last few weeks we've been doing three or four 2 hour sessions a week. My brain nearly explodes when I think how generous she is. When I'm rich and successful I'll pay her back though

That's really nice to hear. I'm glad there are people like that out there. Insurance doesn't cover therapy here. I don't think many therapists here look at therapy as being a long term process. I don't think many would lower their price by much either. When I mentioned being sad about not being able to afford the help I need, my therapist said "I guess it depends on how entitled you feel." She has actually lowered her price by $25 for me, which is really generous of her, but she knows that it's not low enough for me to continue any more. I've lost one former therapist because I couldn't afford to continue. A couple of weeks back I also finished with someone I saw through the public system free for a limited time and I could never afford to see her privately. It's incredibly hard not to think that I'm just not quite good enough. Yet, I'm always so fond of them...

Nightlight you ARE good enough. You are worth it, same as we all are. It's just been pure dumb luck that I stumbled into the path of a therapist who thinks as she does - hopefully the random nature of the universe will see that you meet a therapist who thinks that way too, soon.

And as an aside I'm really annoyed at the remark of the therapist about 'entitlement'. Wtf?! So many of us in therapy struggle with feeling we don't deserve care and love and good things, that we hardly dare to have needs. And we honestly are deserving. All human beings are. I'd find that remark so invalidating. Fair enough if they said 'I can't give you x, because my boundaries mean I don't do a sliding scale' but not cool to make it about a damning reference to 'entitlement'.
Thanks for this!

in US money, just over $72 but I used to only pay $49. Therapy must be really expensive over there.

I'm very lucky. My T has a private practice, but he has a kind of contract with the public health system so he's paid by my tax kronor. As a result I only have to pay what I would for a specialist physician - a fairly small fee, up to a maximum of approximately US$ 170 per year. After that I don't pay anything (for any kind of health care) for the next 12 months. I didn't think it would be possible to get long-term therapy covered by the system, but evidently it is - so I really am fortunate. I would not have been able to get this level of care if I'd had to pay out of pocket. The therapy is better, too, when I'm not feeling anxious about wasting money.

My Pdoc has seen me free of charge for over 2 years now. I see him as a private patient, but billed through a Government clinic. There's a small group of us I think he's taken a special interest in, so part of that is we get top rate treatment for nothing.

My current T charges (in US currency) 250$ per session, so two sessions per week would be quite expensive but the insurance reimburse 90%... My consulting T charges 200$ per session and as she is not pdoc - no reimbursement is possible...

My T charges $95, but I pay what I can, anywhere between $50 and $75 per session.

$100 per session. Unfortunately, he doesn't accept my insurance so it's out of pocket.

One poster mentioned a grant her therapist applied for. I was fascinated by that idea. It might be worth it for others to check it out.

I've been unlucky then lucky my family has always payed, "Here's our money. Now FIX her!" My last therapist had me look at it in a different light, and the guilt went away.

ETA: my last therapist was $90.00/hr. I had as much therapy as I wanted and offered her $1000/month, though she was willing to do it for much less. We made a deal for me to pay this, and volunteer out in the community (I chose to be a stay at home mom). Trust fund babies, which I am not one are usually told to go volunteer. I proposed this to her, since at the time I had issues with money, and people doing things for me. This is not the case anymore. She loved the idea. I let her know the hours I volunteered every month for her records. I offered to work in a nonprofit of her choice, she said no, whatever I did was okay, but I chose economically and educationally challenged children, especially because her specialty is adoption and foster care children. It has lead to many job offers.

In 1992, in CA my Jungian Psychologist was $180/hour. My father kept asking wouldn't I rather have him buy me a bigger house. Duh...

My T is a pdoc so 80% of his 150$ charge is reimbursed by the national healthcare system. So I pay about 30$ a session, used to be a bit less, but she has increased her prices twice. That wasn't her choice though, prices are imposed by the healthcare system.

Skills group sessions are about 40$ and again 80% are reimbursed. I could never afford to see a T who isn't a pdoc as they are not reimbursed at all and almost the same price.

My T charges $170/session. Does not take insurance. I submit it to my insurance company myself and get 80% back so technically only paying $34/session.

Wow, I guess then I'm super mega lucky ... I could never afford $60 on a weekly basis. In my country, the average price for a therapy session is about the equivalent of $20-30. After reading these posts, I'm inclined to say my therapist is a sweetheart for charging me the equivalent of $18 per session. Lately I haven't heard of anyone else charging less than $20-20something.

I feel really lucky reading these replies. I pay my T £20 per session, so that's approx. $30USD.

I pay $200 each time I see my pdoc (which is 1/month or bi-weekly sometimes) and that is NOT covered by insurance. She does 45 mins psychotherapy plus med support and is worth it. I owe this woman my life. My regular therapist takes insurance and so I pay $50 co-pay.

My therapist charges $100 per hour. It was $80 until a couple weeks ago. I pay out of pocket as she's out of network. She receives half of it, the other half is fees.

I could see someone in network for the cost of $30 per hour and insurance premiums, but my therapist is special, I wouldn't want to substitute her for anyone. I also get more flexibility with her to do multiple sessions in a week and phone calls pretty much on request.

My therapist did make me promise to tell her if I ever could not afford the fee when she raised hers, that she would work with me no matter what. That was very very much appreciated, though I would never want to have to take her up on the offer.

Romania. I'm talking mostly about therapists in private practice here, who seem to be the lucky ones. I've met worse paid therapists who work in other settings. It's not that Ts aren't paid well in this country though, it's the general issue with most fields of work. I'd say it's actually good pay compared to employees in many fields.

My T charges roughly $80-$100 I'm actually not quite sure she's private practice and has went up twice since I started seeing her. I've always only always paid $50 though, since she knows thats all I'm able to afford.
