I've have had trouble sleeping for years now, but most of the time I handle it ok as I only work part-time. But over the last few days it has become pretty bad, I don't manage to sleep before 4-5 am, sometimes even later than that. I've tried herbal supplements, not catching up sleep during the day... nothing works except stealing my mom's benzos. But she stopped taking them a while ago, so I only have half a pill left and no new supply in sight.

A few months ago, my T/Pdoc said she'd rather write me a script for some proper sleeping aids, rather than having me steal benzos. But at the end of that session both of us forgot and I was doing ok until now.

Right now I'm quite desperate for sleep and wondering if I should call her on Friday and ask if I can drop by between clients just to get a script for some sleeping aids. She would be fine with me doing this if I was running out of my Prozac, but as she's never prescribed me any sleeping aids I wonder if she would be ok with it.

If I don't do that I'll see her on Monday night for skills group, but I doubt I'll manage to ask her and I don't have a private session until next friday.

Jordy, if the sleep problems are causing you issues, yes I would call your T/Pdoc. Sleep is so important.

I was once in a similar situation and toughed it out until the next appointment with Pdoc. Pdoc said that he wished I had given him a call and he would have written the script before my next appointment. So - call!

I'm still doing ok, even with the lack of sleep, but I know I have to get it until control soon. Lack of sleep is one of my main triggers for bpd, so basically if this goes on for a few more days, I may end up losing control only because I'm so tired. It has happenned in the past and I don't want this to happen again... I'm really trying to find healthy ways to sleep, but even spending the night at a friend's house where I feel safe hasn't helped. I laid most of the night awake in bed...

Yes, I would and I have contacted my pdoc (T doesn't prescribe) when I need something and he willingly obliges, especially when we've talked about it before. It wouldn't hurt for you to call and get the script and fill it, even if you don't need it right at this moment, cause then you'll have it for the next sleepless night.

Absolutely. If we've previously discussed it and he was going to write a script anyway, or it's one of my regular meds then sure I'll phone or email him for a script. I wouldn't do it though if it wasn't something we'd already talked about, like I wouldn't phone him and say 'I'm thinking of trying X medication, can you write me a script'. If I did that he'd say we'd need to talk about it in person first.

Would you call your T/Pdoc between sessions for a new script?

I would just go to my GP, if it were me, because my Pdoc/GP communicate and GP knows what meds I'm on.

If I were YOU, I'd call your Pdoc and I'd do it soon with the weekend coming (so many people don't work Friday afternoons!).

I'm surprised she's willing to prescribe you benzo's when she knows you've been "stealing" them.

I don't know what happenned, but I slept like a baby last night! Feeling so much better... I'll see how tonight goes and decide tomorrow whether to call her or to stick it out until monday. There's nothing I can do today anyway as my Pdoc doesn't work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Going to my GP is not an option as I haven't seen him in 3 years and he doesn't even know I'm seeing a Pdoc.

Just to clarify, she doesn't want me to use benzos, so she would prescribe me something more harmless. She told me what it was, but I can't remember...

I have contacted my PDoc between sessions, for a script, thought more along lines of an,AD, at that time. I've scheduled an appointment once, in between sessions. They can always call back, have phone consult, then proceed from there.

If I were you I'd contact her anyway. Esp if she already knows what to give you. Its literally 2min of her time and you'll be set for the weekend. What if you'll sleep another night and than nothing? 3consecutive nights with no sleep at all is physically and mentally demanding.

Yes, I would definitely contact Pdoc about this. In fact, I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I used to take Trazadone for sleep (when I was on a higher dose of Lamictal, which I am no longer). But with getting off Trileptal it's caused some insomnia. So I called pdoc and asked for a script of Trazadone, explaining that I took for about 4 years and had no trouble (and it's not a benzo), and he faxed it right in. I have also taken Klonapin for sleep and that really makes me not sleep well. Trazadone can make me a little groggy sometimes and you have to start with a low dose, but it's much better than benzos for me. And not addicting.

You should call today bc you don't want to get into a situation of it being the weekend and having 3 bad nights of sleep before you can contact him.

Thanks for all your advice... I realize I should call her tomorrow, but not sure if I will. I worry that if she doesn't give me the script I will be even worse off than now, and I can't afford that this week-end. I'm helping out at a local party on saturday night, and every year I end up absolutely wasted, I want to change that this year year and drink moderately. To achieve that I need to feel as good as I possibly can... so now is not the time to takee any risks. I'll try and talk to her on monday after group though...

Great.... I'm so freaking tired from barely sleeping all of last week, had a rough weekend... and stupid me didn't call my T on friday, and when I saw her for group today I didn't tell her how tired I am... I know, I screwed up, and now I'm on my own until my session on Friday. Hopefully by then she'll realize how tired I am and will help me with that!

I know that it's hard, but how will your T realize that you're so tired between now and Friday? Will you see or talk to before this? If not, then I'd suggest getting in contact with her to specifically discuss this issue. Waiting for her to do so could lead to a new disappointment, which could be magnified by how tired you're feeling (I always have stronger reactions when I'm so tired). Good luck! It's not too late to call.

I don't think I'll contacther until Friday. Yes, it's difficult, but I can handle this as I'm not working this week. We'll talk about this when we discuss my diary card on Friday as I've mentioned on it how bad I sleep, and that I've had to use benzos.

At least now I've realized where these sleeping issues come from, and I hope we'll be able to at least partially sort them out.
