that really sux. Are you still considering the private option? While we have a real lack of any docs or anything where I am (so bad that when I meet my new pdoc next week he'll be my 3rd doc this year) at least there is nothing like a 2yr waiting list. I heard that, for the children's services anyway, there is an 8month list and ppl think that is bad!!! GL, take care and stay safe.

Jinny, I have gone privately. Waiting 2yrs for a bit of CBT isn't really worth it. Can you afford to go privately? My gp also told me 3yrs ago that I needed to start to help myself. I could have punched him there and then! I didn't. Since going private I have found the help I needed. Hope things work out soon for you.

Jinny,

I am so sorry that your doctor told you there is a two year wait!

What kind of "healthcare" system is that? Here in the US things are far from perfect with HMO gatekeepers and people without any medical knowledge telling doctors what they can or can't do, but what is happening to you is a travesty and it seems this is common in the UK?

Hang in there Jinny, I wish I knew how to help. Praying that someone will give you a break.

Best wishes,
Olivia

Jinny....

I am so sorry...I hear great pain and angst in your post, I hope that you can find help sooner somehow..maybe someone from the UK can offer more resources..

I feel very bad for you Jinny..it is not right to have to wait that long to get the help you need..

I;m from the UK, Jinny's experience is typical of the uk. BUT there are so many people that are taking out and not putting in so eventually something has to give.

I think ((jinny)) Though it doesn't feel like it now, this doctor has given you a break. He could be irisponsible and keep dishing out pills for you? The path to recovery is long and hard and full of painful experiences, like your experience today, Yes it must be scary and I hope your GP is not just taking you off the meds? You may need to ween yourself off slowly? But as long as gps or doctors hand out pills a lot of people remain "STUCK"..

As I say in the end the doctor shut the door on me, it was the best break I could have had. I got motivated out of my pain. Jinny you were worried about how your 15yr old son would feel seeing you throwing a fit? well now you can show him how someone can change their lot? When my 18yr old son was 14 he needed picking up from a station because it was dark and late and I was to drunk to do it! I knew deep down inside that I cared about my kids and I decided then and there to get help! I never drank again. Its not been easy, but its possible.

Sounds like you have an unsympathetic GP.

I can asure you that if you have a severe mental health problem that there is no waiting list to see a psychiatrist. If you were having serious problems you would be seeing a mental health professional straight away.

If you feel that you are a danger to yourself or others please contact your doctor straight away and you should be seen very promptly.

It maybe that your GP feels that you are coping well enough, maybe you could ask for a second opinion from another GP.

On the otherhand there is a long waiting list if you want to see a psychololgist. Is this what your GP meant?

Hoping you manage to find some support soon.

Ok. First, I want you to be sure you are on the "waiting list." No reason not to be... Do you need to be signed up for a particular one or a group or what? How does this work, do you really know? If not, find out exactly.

Now, why not take the counselor while you can? I wouldn't pass up anything that might help along the way imo. Besides, the counselor might have resources for you that you don't have or know of now. Plus, the counselor might be able to help you find some alternative medicines or methods that will help you cope. Remember, all of our modern medicines still come from the basics of a plant somewhere.

I know you feel desperate... but catastrophizing will only make things feel worse. You don't need to feel any worse. You do need your energy to do good self care, imo... you have to. I think, well I know for me, it's feels crummy to have to be the only one "rescuing" yourself. Sometimes we have to do all that needs to be done, by ourselves. 2 YEARS HAHAHAHAH

You have us here at PC for support. BTW my GP, who also practices homeopathic medicine, treated me about the same way
2 YEARS HAHAHAHAH It seems I have to show her all that I'm doing for myself before she really kicks in and helps me.

Can you tell us about how therapists haven't helped you in the past? How long did you see one, and what would you want from a T that you didn't get before?

2 YEARS HAHAHAHAH

Jinny, I'm so sorry about the long waiting lists in your country. I was a little confused. Are you on the waiting list for a psychologist/therapist or a psychiatrist/pdoc? Or both? Is there a long wait for both types of provider?

Could you get on the list for the pdoc and go see a counselor/therapist privately? Maybe try to see a T for some quick, shortterm help with coping strategies to help you deal with stuff during the wait for the pdoc. This won't help your underlying issues but at least might help with your symptoms, such as sleeplessness. The first thing my CBT-style counselor did with me last year was work on sleep, as I had only been getting a few hours a night for a couple of years. Basically she said, you can't function well without sleep so we ain't working on anything until you are getting more sleep. We worked on sleep for months. Sounds trivial, but getting enough sleep made moving forward in therapy actually possible for me, and getting at root problems.

Anyway, maybe it is worth paying out of pocket for a counselor to help short term while you wait on the list for the pdoc. And when you are dealing with symptoms and coping better, maybe you will find the therapist can help you more deeply.

Good luck.

sunny

Hello Jinny.
I am sorry you are going through al of this at this time. I hope you get on the list for treatment een if it is a 2 year wait. If things get worse go to the Emergence Room if needed, this may up the time it takes to see someone in the UK for your mental health issues. Take care Soidhonia

Jinny you ve gotten some really great advice from everyone on this thread. the UK does really bite with its so called health care system. its beyond ridiculous and so unfair to ask people who have to fight tooth and nail to just keep breathing to also fight to get help. grrrrrrrrrr. makes me so mad.
how have you been doing since you posted this first?
my thoughts are with you.
