'cheap' or 'expensive' is all relative...

i think people fail to get that sometimes.

people are used to looking at the 'objective' amount instead of considering it as a percentage of income or a percentage of income afer rent and power and food.

yeah, that is the amount she quoted you. if you explain your situation to her then she might be able to go one better, though. i guess you won't know unless you ask. she could have a bright idea for talking to your parents too (they don't need to know its to do with trauma it could be about personal development to do with your degree)

Good point, ak.

My T first quoted me $85/session, then when I said I really wanted to come every week she thought about it for a week and offered weekly at $70/session.

So you never know if you don't ask.

Canders,
I agree with the majority. Go for it. Your peace of mind and comfort level are worth the $50. I think the idea of making a little extra $ to pay for it is a good one. If you ask your parents to cover the therapy under their insurance, do you have to tell them what the therapy is about? I have paid for my son's therapy and never once asked him personal questions about it.

Good luck.

(((((((((((sunrise)))))))))))))

I'm being informally paid for some clerical stuff, but unfortunately it doesn't carry over for the summer. I wish I could be a tutor, unfortunately my grades don't exactly make me a good tutor. But I'm going to see, thanks for the idea. I have a problem...

Long-term therapy with her would be great, but I'm sure she'd get sick of me eventually. And sooner or later, my family would find out - and to put it mildly, all hell would break loose.

T-fund, hehe. I like that idea. I have a problem... Thanks.

Unfortunately she works through an organization, and $50 is the cheapest they go.

I wish my parents would be supportive of therapy for personal development, but the last time I let it slip I was seeing a counsellor ... lets just say I was screamed at and guilted for an entire car ride. It was a LONG car ride. Never again will I do something so stupid.

thanks ((((((((((((alexandra_k)))))))))))))))))

I did ask, unfortunately. She said that the organization wouldn't let her offer anything less than $50. Sucky. Oh well, thanks (((((((((((ECHOES))))))))))))))

Hi canders!

I definitely think the therapy is a great idea if there's any way you can swing it. $50 is a good price though I understand it may be hard in your particular financial situation. But give it a shot! It could be SO helpful in working through the past. And it sounds like you might be able to swing it if you're careful with money (or maybe try the part-time thing if you can find something).

I totally understand about not telling the parents. I'm 36 years old -- long since left home -- and I still wouldn't tell my parents about therapy. Because I already know the only question my mother would ask is "How much does it cost?" And if I told the truth, I'd hear no end of how stupid I was to waste such money and how would I let people brainwash me into doing that and why wouldn't I just go to a church pastor and save my money etc. etc. I don't want to hear any of that, so I never talk about it to them. And yet I think it's the absolute best money I've ever spent, and I'm thankful every day that I found a wonderful therapist who helps me.

I really hope you decide to do therapy. It's especially great that it's someone you already knew and liked. Go for it! I have a problem...
