BF was in session with me today for the first time. It was super awkward.

Somehow they got talking about my father. My BF had cut contact with his dad for a few years multiple years ago (mostly not due to his father but due to his stepmom). BF said how he doesn't understand why I don't just do the same.
T asked me what I think about it etc., agreeing with BF that it's a "bad" relationship. Does T think it would be better to cut off contact with my dad? (rhetorical question of course...). Urgs.

((Demunie)) I did this also.... if you consider it carefully and that's what you have to do, then that's what you have to do, but don't let anyone pressure you. I don't regret it but I really wasn't expecting the pain of losing what little support I had from my family completely (I thought I could cut off my dad only and maintain the other familial connections but they had a different outlook) and the social stigma that comes with not having a family, at least in my country, is massive. I have to confront it in nearly every conversation I have with people since asking about one's family is a very popular topic when you are getting to know someone. I'm still struggling with this-- it's really brought out my self-isolating tendencies.

It's awful that the other parts of your family cut you off too - Do you know what their reasoning is? (You don't have to answer of course)

The stigma here is massive too I think. I'm already weird for not going back to my parents every f... weekend.

My mom said it was like a family divorce and since she is married to my father, she must support and believe him and therefor could not support or believe me. She said my grip on reality has always been shaky at best and my memories of abuse were probably just bad dreams I had when I was little. And then went on to say that he always had a terrible temper but made amends for it later, and he had a lonely childhood so I should cut him a break, and so on....

But mom, you're my mom, so, uh, what about MY childhood...??

So yeah, no family, and hearing all that from my mom sucked big time. I still speak with her very occasionally, maybe a text or very short call every five months or so. But that's not a relationship. I'm not sure where my sisters stand with this. But I never really talked with them at all in general, so that isn't new.

I've a friend who hasn't lived with his abusive parents since he was about 10? as he was taken away into a children's home and then lived with his aunt.

He still has to pay them money each month as "filial piety" or some lawyer will come after him because there's legislation for adult children to "maintain" parents. Or they call him and scream about how he should kill himself.

He lies about his family so as to "fit in" into "normal" society because people don't understand.

Sorry I killed the couch. Carry on. Thinking about heating up a hotdog for lunch. There are only two left in the package so three isn't an option. And baby kale with some tahini. Why have I never thought of using tahini as a dressing? It's so good...

Just had to watch a couple videos about compassion at work. They made me cry!! Such sad situations. Why do they make us watch something like that?! If they're trying to make us more compassionate on the phones, they'll need to quit pushing so hard the 5 minute handle time. People need more than the 5 minutes I'm allowed to give them. So thankful I'll be off the phones after this week...
