I am sorry that you are experiencing this Costello. I don't think you should blame yourself, that will not solve anything. Someone told me, "free will isn't free", this is what your son is going to learn with booze. Seems to me that everyone does. Some sooner than others, thats the only difference, I believe.

Maybe put some literature around so he can see it, about alcoholism or addiction or trouble with bein stupid cuz someone is intoxicated.

I hope this helps you a bit, you have been very helpful to me.

I have noticed this, and I want to return the favor.

G'luck brook
Thanks for this!

I'm here and far more cheerful than I've been over the last week or two.

Thanks. Luckily I have a sister who's an alcoholic. (Ha! I wonder if that sentence has ever been uttered before!) She's been sober a couple of years now. He seems to realize there's a problem, and he called her for advice.

I can see so many angles to this. On the one hand he needs friends. But this friend will always be a drinking buddy. So if he wants to hold on to this friend, he probably won't quit drinking.

Also he swore up and down that he wouldn't drink, but I knew he would. Maybe he really believed he could go hang out with his alcoholic friend in a bar and not drink. My problem isn't alcohol; it's sugar. And I'm very familiar with this form of self-delusion. Yes, I'm going to go to the buffet, but I'm not going to have the dessert. Ha! I'm going to have the dessert, and a little part of me knows it even as I'm lying to myself. I might as well tell the truth to myself. If I want to avoid the dessert, I need to avoid the buffet. So when he left the house saying he wasn't going to drink, I figured he was going to drink. And when he came back drunk, I wasn't surprised.

Also I'm glad he didn't drive after drinking. He has a DUI hanging over him. He was picked up for driving drunk in October 2010, right before his last and biggest episode. He missed the court date, because he was so out of it, so I'm pretty sure there's a warrant out there for him. He's had contact with law enforcement a few times since then, and they've looked for warrants and not found them, but I know it's there because my ex-BIL is a cop in another town in the same county, and he heard it announced. There's no way they're just going to forget about a failure to appear on a DUI. So eventually it'll come around and hit him. I think his name must be misspelled or something, because the other times law enforcement looked for warrants he didn't have his driver's license back. I suspect if they run his dl#, they'll find the warrant, and he'll end up in jail. Not a fun way to spend your birthday, and frankly I can't afford to bail him out right now.

Maybe he feels a need to "man up" also. People seem to dismiss this as a cultural flaw, but I disagree. If he can prove his independence and capabilities another way, besides being able to "drink like a man" this would help. There aren't many healthy male role models for this, currently. G'luck Costello!

Here.

Slept longer last night, A very hard, deep sleep. Feeling a bit groggy and "thick" this morning. I suppose it will take a few good nights before I stop feeling so stupid and slow.

costello... I have been following, but did not know how to respond...You are in my prayers with all that you and your son are going through...It is encouraging to hear however that he is at least talking to you about his failure, instead of withdrawing from you.

It's hard as a parent not to want to lecture about all the things that we know can go wrong or could go wrong that we have learned from our own lifes that we think our cildren should take heed to.

I give you alot of credit for being there for him.

I do not believe in bailing out my children in any way when it comes to the bad choices that they make. But I am always here for them to listen to them and encourage them to make better choices the next time.

I don't know.... I just wanted you to know that you are in my prayers.

I am here

That's an intriguing comment. What's it mean?

Here and ok.

My son didn't sleep at all last night. First day back to work after spring break AND he has two appts - pdoc at 11:30 and therapist at 1:00. Not sure if the anxiety caused the sleeplessness. He thinks it's because he isn't eating enough. Not sure I see the connection, but he insists that when he eats less, he sleeps less.

Just wanted to say that not eating enough makes me very restless and jumpy. And hypoglycemia can make me completely loopy and hyper. If he's truly not eating enough, or is eating significantly less than normal, that could really be a contributing factor.

I've been watching an anime demonoid character follow around one of my co-workers today, but so far keeping my mouth shut. So far so good.
