Hey John,

I'm not sure if managers are allowed to ask specifically why you need a day off. I'd say you could mention it after you've gotten the job, or bring it up during the interview? Or is it possible to see the psychiatrist during hours you're not actually working?

If they ask, you could say you're in treatment for something, but not bring it up. Or say "depression" or something like that, which is fairly common and more socially acceptable and easier for people to understand?

Wish you much luck!

Personally, I would NEVER mention a mental health issue when you are applying for a job and when you are starting a new job. It will be used against you and you will be discriminated against, even if you mention something common like "depression."

If you get the job, by law (The American Disabilities Act) you have the RIGHT to have your workplace accomadate your disabilities, and this does include mental health. You might have to go through human resources to be able to get your day off, but your immediate supervisor will never know your condition.

I would be very careful about telling people your private issues regarding MH care. If the job is for 5 days and you want 4, do you really think telling your boss you can only work 4 days because you need to see a shrink is helpful? On top of not working 5 days, he may see you as "ill" and not dependable.

Wait until you have the job and go through the proper channels (ie Disabilities Act stuff)

Just my 2 cents...

I would suggest just simply saying "Doctors Appointment" they can't argue with that, since you are going to see a doctor. if they ask for a doctors note, or some sort of proof, give them the name/number of your doctor. You don't have to say specifically what you're going for. Simply because it's none of their business.

I know where I work, when i want a day off, a request a little in advance.
