I just got back from court, where a jerkwad lawyer tried to insist that a little 6-year-old girl with nothing to gain by lying was lying about something somebody did to her.

I have zero respect for this guy in the first place, because he's one of those "well, it depends on what you mean by 'it'" lawyers and will object to somebody who says it's Tuesday and the sky is blue, you know what I mean? He's a hack, in other words. And he's a hack close to retirement who really should just give it up now.

This little girl was so young that it's illegal in this state to let her in the courtroom to testify and be cross-examined. A police officer and a social worker talked to her and they videotaped it.

I just want to know, what the hell does this guy think he's doing by disbelieving a little kid? Kids don't lie about this stuff. The judge had the sense to say there was "overwhelming evidence" to send the creep to trial. And yet his lawyer kept trying to malign a poor little kid. What makes him any less of an abuser?

Some days, I really hate my job.

Especially at THAT age. what a jerk.

IMHO judges who have this attitude ARE just as much to blame as the perpetrator.....you only have to look at the news to see these facts.....makes my blood boil....I'd like to see what happened if it was to be one of his daughters or grandaughters...God forbid......would this change his attitude???

candy, I'm not in any way excusing this guy so please don't take what I'm about to say that way. But his job is to defend his client and discrediting the witness is a standard part of that. It sucks, and it's why I could never do that job, but it's what this guy is supposed to do.

Sounds like the judge was pretty good though and I'm glad the jackass is going to court.

I agree -- I couldn't ever do that job either. I just wonder how those people sleep at night, knowing they're picking on an innocent child who's already been mistreated. Do they not have consciences, or do they just set them aside to do their job? How do they live with themselves?

From what I've heard, they find peace in really big paychecks.

I guess so. I would just rather have my soul intact and my conscience clear than a lot of money. Probably I'm weird that way.

I'd find peace if I were the lawyer by picking such cases you know you can't win (but would still get the money). I think most people are going to have the reaction we had of "how can anyone pick on a 6 year old" but since the lawyer isn't going to hear/know "most people" and those in the "system" know he's only doing his job, in a sense he gets to get back at the abuser by taking his money for nothing.

There are some situations though where kids get caught with adults and "have to" lie in order to be safe with their caregiver or some other bastard; there are situations where parents don't think of/protect their kids in the first place and abuse them by making them say certain things, etc. to get back at a spouse, for example. Unfortunately kids are more easy to lead in that way as they can't always figure out what is going on or understand the significance of what they say, etc. I wouldn't want an innocent man to go to jail or have problems because some other %#@&#! adult was using the child in that way.

((((((((ev))))))) There really isn't any way around it without getting another job. My boss already has little patience for my mental health stuff. I'm afraid if I tell him I'd rather have another beat, I'd just end up unemployed instead. sad/angry/....
