What are some good ways to reduce appetite?

I started Seroquel XR full time on Wednesday and I'm just hungry all the time. Fortunately, i have not gained weight from it. Why? Because I ignore my hunger. I know that my hunger is "fake" most of the time. I just don't want to have to ignore hunger. It's hard.

I've been drinking water to reduce hunger, but that trick only lasts for so long before my stomach starts to growl. Any tips that have worked for you, whether you're on Seroquel, Zyprexa, Clozaril, etc?

So far I've eaten about 700 calories today between breakfast and lunch. I've been a good girl!

Have you considered going on a healthy diet, one that requires eating multiple times a day (small healthy snacks)? Maybe focusing on a healthy diet that keeps you full without unhealthy calories would be a way to feed the hunger urge without a bunch of empty calories. In our house, we've used the Shred diet a few times because we found it easy to follow, it required several snacks as well as meals AND we actually lost weight while probably eating more than we usually do.

Awesome

I'm not looking to lose weight. I want to gain some weight actually, but not thru carbs (or empty calories, as you put it). My biggest issue is that I have high cholesterol due to familial hypocholesterolemia, so I can't afford the extra carbs... because they have worsened my cholesterol over the years. We're talking 314 total cholesterol (yikes...)

I'll try your diet suggestion. Maybe smaller, more frequent meals will help. I just want to avoid carbs altogether, yet I crave them so much. I'll probably stick to healthy fats.

I just don't want to overeat...

This might be an odd suggestion but I suggest you watch a documentary called "The widow Maker". It's available on Netflix. With your history of familial high cholesterol and your desire to reduce carbs, it might be a scare tactic that could work for you. I recommend everyone watch this documentary but I feel it could really help light a fire for you. I'm sorry you have high cholesterol. The meds we take are often not good for cholesterol so you got a raw deal having bipolar and these issues. I hope you find something which works for you.
Thanks for this!

In my experience, Seroquel "hunger" is a beast that can't be tamed. When I was taking it I could eat until I was stuffed and still want to eat more. I think it hijacks the body's hunger signals and just effs them up. Best of luck to you. Some people don't experience appetite increase on Seroquel, but I'm pretty sure they're few and far between. There are some on this forum who are lucky enough to be that way, but I'm not one of them.

Maybe eat a pile of veggies. Then do it again. And again.

My middle son is on a "diet" to try to gain weight. He's one of those people who is just naturally skinny as a rail, no matter how much he eats. So he's done a lot of research about changing his eating habits to gain weight in a healthy manner. It is working some and he really is eating healthier.

This is exactly what happens to me from clozapine. I used to be on topamax which would help curb the hunger but that had it's own slew of side effects so I'm off that now. As I write this I'm indulging in some ice cream. I guess the few things that help are staying busy and drinking tons of water/tea.

Oh my god I'm so scared! I will have nightmares if I watch that!

I think I'm going to live off protein shakes and green beans for the rest of my life... lol. So far, your veggie idea has been working.

I've realized that no matter what I eat, I feel hungry after 20 mins. I could eat a giant cake or a handful of peas. Doesn't matter. 20 mins later I'll still feel hungry! So I might as well chow down on fruits and veggies *le sigh*

Yeah, I'm the same as him, although I used to be a morbidly obese toddler! lol! I remember having to suck in my beer belly just to make my pants fit. Not sure what happened after that.

But anyway,
I've been looking into eating things with healthy fats. I've discovered that I can just douse things in olive oil, but I haven't done much research on what other healthy fats there are (such as avocados and stuff like that). So far it's been veggies with olive oil!

When I had my TSH checked recently, it was borderline hyperthyroidism, which might be part of the issue. I haven't done a T3 or T4 test.

I started Adderall today. I know that is hard on you, but is hard for me too. Harder is not being able to lift myself from the floor without holding on to something.
I think is gonna work this time. Tell you my weight loss tomorrow. Good Luck and Rock On.

Doctors will never tell you that high cholesterol is killed with sun rays. The UVs convert it to D3. Rock On.

Blue back in my fit days and now from my dietician eat protein. Like in morning have 6 egg whites with veggies or salsa or both, toast or protein pancakes. Try to average I'd say20-25 grams of protein a meal. Protein staves off hunger. Lunch tuna or chicken salad with a Greek yogurt. Dinner fish and veggies. Snacks Greek yogurt, nuts, almonds

Green smoothies. Dump a handful or 2 of spinach (you can't taste it), a banana, some berries or whatever other fruit is sitting around, in a blender, mix it up and drink it. I add chia seeds, flax or wheat bran. You could also add protein powder; I can't because I can't have soy with an MAOI. It's delicious and filling. Greek yogurt is also an option; I've just never tried that. You can add ice as well although I find it comes out pretty cool from the spinach. (Be careful with smoothies containing juice or a lot of yogurt; those will overload with calories rapidly).
You get so much fiber with this; it is filling and good for you and if you are adding protein you can also get a real boost from that too.

@boogie: sounds good. I'll focus more on eating protein. I didn't think about adding protein powder to things! That's a good idea, like those protein pancakes.

@BeyondTheRainbow: lots of great ideas! Thanks! I have chia and flaxseed. Normally I just toss some into my oatmeal, but I'll pour them into my shakes from now on.

Good for you for chomping on veggies and not Cheetos. That's a huge thing.
