Yesterday morning I had a pdoc appointment and he said he was going to send over a prescription for trazodone to hopefully help with sleep. Ive been getting an average of four or five hours a night. I was hoping to pick it up yesterday and take it last night, but nope. This morning I called the pharmacy as soon as they opened to see if my doctor sent over the prescription, and nope. Then I immediately called my doctors office to tell them to remind my doctor to send over the prescription. I still have not heard back from them; they said they would call after sorting their **** out.
It's Friday, so if he doesn't send over the prescription today he wont get another chance to until Monday. If I still cant sleep, Ill probably be manic by then. I dont particularly want to be manic right now because I just got off clozapine, and I'm terrified if I wind up in an episode my doc is gonna put me back on clozapine, and Ill say "no way, José," and wind up IP. But you know, what the **** do I care at this point?
Just frustrated and want to sleep for more than two hours straight. Sorry.

I'd be frustrated too. I am frustrated for you. Lack of sleep wrecks me terribly too. Is there something else you can temporarily use that's possibly natural or over the counter? I'd keep calling the doctor's office until they get it right.

I really wish the Pdocs would seriously treat the inability to sleep with much more seriousness. Lack of sleep is such a powerful trigger to trip us into an episode. I truly believe my recent run of stability is due to the many meds I take just to sleep, never before have I gotten such good regular sleep......it makes a huge difference. I hope your doc gets the script called in pronto!

I just came off of a month long stretch of no sleep and broken sleep. Like you, when I did sleep it was just 2-3 hours at a time. When you're having sleep issues it's miserable.

Sometimes our doctors don't get it. I wonder how they would function on sleep like we do. I wish all of them had to stay up multiple nights just to feel it, so they can empathize.

Hopefully, your doctor will get the rx of trazadone to your pharmacy. Do you have something else to take just in case he doesn't?

I had a zyprexa PRN I took a few times, but my pdoc doesn't want me taking two antipsychotics at a time so that's off the table. I tried my Ativan PRN but that didn't work. Last night I tried Benadryl (which normally doesn't make me tired) and I slept a whole three hours straight. Tonight if I dont get the trazodone I might get some melatonin and try that but I already know from previous experience unless I take a massive dose its probably not going to work. Ive been really working on my sleep hygiene too. Exercising and eating right during the day, no screens, sugary foods, or big meals for a few hours before bed, and Ive been staying out of the room I'm sleeping in and off the bed unless its bedtime.

I suffer insomnia and Zyprexa used to help with it. But I'm afraid to get back on it as it contributes more liver damage that I've endured from a twenty year old alcohol addiction. Besides, Zyprexa only makes me want to sleep all day and avoid doing anything, something that's currently in my control.

no one has had more difficulty finding the right sleep med than me and it's been only this past yr. that it has really taken over my life (i'm 71 yr. old female and only have hypomania with no depression so i can't take any antidepressant or else it'll trigger mania)..it's become trial and error for me, listening and documenting every morning how well or crappy i slept the night before; a psychiatrist suggested adding melatonin to the low doses of seroquel which i was taking and the melatonin does seem to add something; i'm retired so if i wake up with a med hangover, i don't have any kids to deal with or job to go to so for me i don't mind the med hangover as long as i get good sleep; ambien does little or nothing but when i was trying some over-the counter stuff; the liquid zzzquill i think did help (along with the melatonin) and i think i have finally found the magic potion for me: melatonin, seroquel (25mg or even cut that in half) and 15mg. temazepam. good luck in finding some relief.

I feel your pain I was in the same boat as you. I tried everything finally 200mg of seroquel does the trick. The only problem is I sleep to long and find myself lazy the next day. I hope you get your trazadone and I hope it works for you.

not all docs will prescribe restoril, but the 30mgs restoril capsule...man oh man. that was my go to pill for when i just needed --sleep--, damnit!

any benzodiazepine will do the trick. gabapentin. lyrica. vistaril/atarax. some people swear by doxepin, but i hate the stuff.

do you ever wish they'd just bring back Seconal? LOL.

NyQuil ? When I have long stretches of no sleep it has helped me some. They now have straight ZQuil now.

Melatonin also seems to help a bit.

I hope your pdocs office gets there shyt literally together and send over a simple damn script for Trazadone it’s not like a scheduled drug or anything , my husband takes it for sleep.

Hope you get relief from one insomniac to another.

I've been super lucky that my doctors have all taken sleep very seriously. Sleep has been a problem my whole life. Nothing OTC ever helped and trazodone was useless. Ambien quit working. Now I take 50mg Seroquel and 3mg Lunesta and sometimes (guiltily) I'll add a mg of Xanax if that all doesn't work. I know it's a lot, but no doctor I've had has ever protested.
Thanks for this!

Sometimes having a 30 minute nap makes a world of a difference. I hope everything goes smoothly this weekend. I've been coming in to PS in small bursts today. Sometimes I even need to take a break, from the break.

But I would also like to take this time to reflect. I've said, upset some individuals and that is making me physically sick. Hence the additional insomnia I'm sorry.

I ended up getting the trazodone yesterday. It didn't help last night. My pdoc said to start with 50mg and if that doesn't help go up to 100mg. I'm going to try again tonight. If not I guess its time to start finding my own **** that works.
Thanks Christina, Ill try the Zquil and melatonin and will definitely get some next time I head out.

The active ingredient in Zzzquil is diphenhydramine, the same ingredient in Benedryl, the antihistamine you can buy for super cheap as a store brand. If Benedryl doesn't help there's absolutely no reason Zzzquil would.

There's also valerian root, kava kava, and mytragyna hirsuta that help to relax and sleep. Red vein kratom can also be mildly sedating. Check legality in your areas, all of those are still ok where I live. The hirsuta used to knock me out like a ton of bricks but it hasn't the last three times I've tried. Valerian and kava can be purchased in some teas in the grocery store. Also, some people have experienced interactions with these plants and psych meds. I have had no such troubles.
Also, certain foods can be sedating. I swear, 2 tacos loaded with Cholula and I'm out like a light for a long while. Other foods are stimulating.
