I was wondering what pain medicines everyone is on and which ones you feel work best to STOP PAIN? - I am asking as I see my rheumy here in a week or two and I want to go in asking for some thing that works great to help stop my pain (no ifs or buts about it).

I need relief from pain due to: RA, Fibro, Bursits, Migraines, TMJ, GERDS and Sinusitis

Thank you.

Hi there, I'm taking Opana ER 80mgs 2 times a day and Fentora 600mcgs 3 times a day for breakthrough pain. I still have some pain but for the most part it works pretty well. I wish you luck with your doctor and on finding something that works for you with pain. Hugs!

Oh trust me I am on anti inflammatory medication (three of them) and have been for the last twelve years... my doctor changes my rheumy medicine as needed, but the PAIN is still a problem, hence me wanting better pain relief.

Sometimes its a bit of trial and error.

Myself I find Endocet better than anything else to truly get rid of pain. I have used stronger drugs but found either it didnt last as long or it just plain didnt work as well FOR ME.

Pain management can be a complicated issue, and it can change with time. I'm sure you know. The meds you are currently taking might not be working any more, and just switching to something different, going off these, might work for you. Trying different anti-inflamatories are same way for some.

I'd investigate a pain management psychologist and work that way to help decrease pain. It's well documented that mismanagement of stress, or becoming overwhelmed by stress causes increased pain in the body. The body is so intertwined with the mind, we can't help it. A routine --a strong regimen-- of self care including meditation and breathing and relaxation skills might be mandatory for you at this point, to get an even better handle on the pain.

I take verapamil to prevent migraine pain, take tylenol for headaches and take naprosyn for muscle aches/tooth pain.

I took Lyrica for fibromyalgia for awhile but it was making me really dizzy so we stopped it.

You mentioned GERD - are you having pain such as burning in your esophagus or what? I am taking Zegerid now for my GERD. Last year it cost $180 for a month supply but they now have it OTC for ~ $8.

Prilosec is the same active ingredient as the Zegerid I take. Zegerid has some sodium bicarb too which is nice.

You said you have been using NSAIDs and still have pain. You might ask your doc about trialing Lyrica. It helped my fibromyalgia but at the cost of being able to walk straight without dizziness so it wasn't worth it for me. You may be different.

I talked to him about Lyrica a few months back and he said from his experience with the medicine he didn't feel it would work for me.... plus he said the medicine has more side effects than good in it.

I just need to find two pain medicines that really work on pain.....
1 - that will ease the pain but not make me sleepy
1 - that will take away the pain and knock me out at night

My sister in law has RA and 6 months ago she went on special injections for it. I don't know the name but it's specifically for RA. See if your doctor thinks you're a good candidate for these shots. Evening primrose oil in good for chronic pain and soaking in epsom salts is soothing. Could you do water aerobics to keep you limber and some controlled stretching. I pray your pain gets better ((Rhapsody))

Amitriptylene (Elevil) is very good night time nerve pain medication. 50 mg quiets the night time pains and lets you get a good nights sleep. you would have to research to see if it is as effective for your conditions.
Thanks for this!

I have a very painful neurological disease called RSD in the right side of my body. My pain is always between a 7 and 10...thats with my meds. I take lots of meds for other things, but my pain meds are Oxycontin, Oxycodone, & Dilaudid.

HmmmTramadol/Ultram isn't really a very good pain med and has lots of side effects. Darvpocet should not be given on a lonf term basis as it's metabolites can become dangerous. If short acting pain meds are working for you maybe you could replace the Ultram and the Darvon with something like Percocet. You can take up to 12 of the 10/325 pils a day which is a pretty good dose. Just make sure you dont take more than 4 grams of tylenol a day for extended periods. Keep the Advil as it is not pain killer but an antiinflamatory. You might be able to get by with less than the 12 - 10/325's a day. Talk to your doctor. Ask what he thinks. Ifhe isn't a pin doc you might try going to a pain clinic. Good luck!

The best pain medicine is..... the one that works for you!

Regarding GERD ... be careful that the medicines you're taking aren't just for the symptoms, and aren't fixing the problem. Most rebound is caused by not having enough stomach acid.... Taking most remedies remove all acid, complicating the problem. You can see if all you need is more stomach acid by taking a tablespoon of apply cider vinegar during your next bout. If it solves the problem (very quickly, a few minutes at longest) then you don't need fancy medications (which perpetuate the issue) but more of the basic stomach enzymes.

If you have serious GERD, then some of the medications can heal it. At that point, go off the med and try the enzymes to solve the problem, otherwise, it will return. The consequences of having that burn your esophagus is terrible. Don't put off a remedy.

Good Evening Rhapsody,
A good medicine as an anti-inflammatory and pain both is Toradol, it worked wonders for me. I also have Fibromyalgia and I tried the Lyrica, I couldn't even tell a difference at all and it's very expensive. Yesterday my doc doubled my dosage of Morphine to 60mg time-released pills, that does help...much better than the former dosage of just half of that. Celebrex is an excellent anti-inflammatory but it is also expensive. They even had me try that new Cymbalta for pain and depression, it didn't work for me...but I'm on 19 prescription meds right now and I've built up a tolerance to practically any kind of med. Good luck and I hope that whatever your doctor writes for you works like a miracle, because when you are in so much pain that you have no Quality in your life whatsoever and can't really do anything much at all...you begin not wanting any Quantity of life!
Huggles,
She

Hi Rhapsody.

I have RSD/CRPS which is a horrible neurological disease. My current meds are Nucynta (morphine), Ketamine (anestegia), baclofen (muscle relaxer), Marinol (synthetic marijuana), Provagil (pain med/antidepressent) and Zofran for nausea. I also get epidurals with Lidocaine and Ketamine and nerve blocks.

My pain levels are never under a 7 and when I'm in a flare it shoots to 100. My PM gave me a note to take to the ER if my pain gets too high. It explains my situation and proves to them that I am indeed in agony and not being a drug-seeker.

I know my story sounds extreme, but if I can help someone obtain relief it makes me feel like I've done something worthwhile. Hope it helps.

Take care,

Kim

Toradol is good for inflammatory pain, however it's been black boxed by the FDA because if you take it longer than 5 days in a row, it kills your kidneys.
Ketoralac is the generic; most pharmacies won't even order the brand. If you have pain from inflammation that nothing else helps, try it, but do stick to the prescribing orders ... oh, and take it with food already in your stomach!

Kakimbo, that's a good idea about the note from your doctor. I may work on that too.

Dilaudid.. hands down. It's generic is hydromorphinone. It's a derrivative opiate with almost none of the difficult side effects and risks of morphine. It's considered one of the safest pain meds out there. You'd have to take some incredible amount (like 42 mg) to get anywhere near toxic on it. The other opiates have high risk of accidental overdose.

i do like tramadol though... but my insurance won't cover it.

i'm a big fan of finding whatever alternatives to pain meds i can, so i have acupuncture and ultrasound treatments twice a week. i need to get massage therapy once a week but can't right now

a lot can be done with visualization, etc as well.

I've been put on tramadol 200 & amitryptaline 150-200mg per night and 50mg am though at the moment this isn't really helping in the am, especially with the frozen shoulder. I was given oxycontin SR which I take also at night and have had some relief with though I am not sleeping because of the pain. Every time I move an inch I wake up almost crying.

Being in a flare at the moment I can't tell you the thoughts I've had because I can't stop this pain..something MUST work...if anyone can tell me what to ask for I'd appreciate it...Lyrica isn't an option for several reasons

the pain I am trying to find some relief from is from my RA & Fibro.

Hey Rhapsody,
Are you interested at all in supplements for pain management? If so, magnesium helps nerve issues (at least for fibro) and then I also take glucosamine for joint health and inflamation, b12 and flaxseed for heart and circulation (helps remove build-up of chemicals and lactic acid from the fibro).
I also take st. johns' wort because I get side effects from prescription antidepressants.
I'm not real big on prescriptions, so I see a DO instead of regular physician. They are into all natural approches as much as possible.
