TWICE in the last week I have been chastised by people who run this site.....
I can not have a picture of me on line (showed some minor cutting). And I was not allowed to state my viewpoint on how cutting CAN be a good thing (as it DOES prevent some people from doing far worse things). So - basically the people who run this site have told me "we do not want you to have a support group". Fine - no support??? I have a solution for what they are forcing me to do. Bye. |

First off, sorry to hear that you had a run in with the staff of this site... I can appreciate that some limitations have to be put in place for the safety of the broad member base... as well as maintaining a good reputation as a support forum.
It must be difficult to be rebuffed when you're trying to help... but it is a sensitive area and in most cases such resources and tips are better off coming from a reputable site. I know in the UK there are online resources (from governmental sites) on tried and tested methods of cutting for example that will minimise damage as well as tips on sterilisation and self-aftercare. You are a part of this community though and as such it would be a shame to see you go on the basis of injured pride. By that same context I know from my own experience with other forums... that staff can mean well and are following the rules of the board, but the appearance of enforcing a rule or guideline is seen as undiplomatic or unfair... when all they are doing is their job. Why not just take a day out and let things settle in your mood... it probably will help ![]()

Hi Useless Me,
Sorry that you felt you needed to vent this out into the forums; generally, talking about admin issues of this nature is not allowed in the community, as it violates our community guidelines. I'll make an exception in this case, however, to clarify why the community support team had issues with two recent things of yours. The first was a photo that the team judged a little too graphic for our site. We take these kinds of things on a case-by-case basis, and sometimes we're going to err on the side of protecting other members from triggering material, rather than freedom of expression. Why? Because you can post such photos on a million different places online, so don't need to do so here. And you can share such photos with your friends here privately if you so choose (and they're okay with seeing such things beforehand). As for the posting, it was less clear-cut, but some members of the team felt it was violating the spirit of the self-injury forum. In situations like that, if you disagree with the team's decision, you're welcomed to bring it directly to my attention. I won't necessarily overturn the team's decision, but I will try and explain it better as to why something was decided the way it was. With over 900 contributions to the community, I do hope you understand that you are a valued member of this community. These actions were not personally directed at you, but just trying to weigh your needs with the needs of keeping our community safe. Best, DocJohn

Sorry to hear that you feel you have been chastised. However, showing photos of SI can be very triggering to some users, so i understand why this action has been taken.
Doc John (and others who run this site) have a duty of care to make it a healthy place for us to come.

Hey useless, just wanted to say that you have helped me I read your most recent post about not being welcome and I read the Doc's response. I can understand why they do what they do and I know all about feeling rejection I have had trouble lately with getting on the suicideprevention chat. All computer glitch but it was one more way of the universe saying I didn't deserve help. I hope you can find your way through this. Please try to struggle through, you truly are not "Useless".

Useless, please don't leave. We all go through hard times and misuderstandings. May I tell you a short incident? A few months ago, I was going through a really hard time, and was seriously thinking of hurting myself. Well, I posted about my thoughts and feelings. Well, the next day a moderator had put a TRIGGER icon on my post. I did not understand at the time why this was done. I sent a PM to the moderator to get a better understanding. After sending two PMs I came to realize that Psych Central was not only a place of support, but also a place of responsibility. Now, I try to carefully word my posts, so that I say what I need to say, as well as respecting those who may be having a harder time coping than I am.

I hope that you don't leave Useless, I do agree with DocJ though that posting SI images can be very triggering to other members on the forums, I hope that you come back.

I can only speak from my perspective and experience here and on other boards. This forum is by far hands down the most professional, fair and consistent in their rules, and guidelines. And they actually do take the time to talk to you in PM to see where your coming from and help you understand what's wrong. Your not going to see that too often. What you will find else where is a lot of inconsistencies. No explanations, and mods that should not be mods. I was banned on two other psych forums rather quickly. All it took is to say the wrong thing that some mod didn't like and then they go thru each of your posts looking for a reason to infract you. No discussion. Even though I could clearly and easily show how I did not do what they said I did. And all the mods and admins would back each other on every call. No open discussions like this. No professionalism at all. The rules were interpreted differently with each mod, no consistency. So basically if you pee-d off one mod for whatever reason, your days were limited. Here you have a chance to at least explain yourself.
I guess what I am saying here is this forum is very fair and unbiased and they take the time to understand you and help you understand why the things are the way they are. Do I agree with every thing here? Of course not. But that's the way it is at least I know they are consistent. SO think about it before you go for good. Go see what you can "get away with" on some of those other forums where instead of a democracy they follow a dictatorship. And you have no chance to win a disagreement with any of them. Even the ones that let you swear and use any avatar you want, if you pee-off the wrong mod, your days are numbered.

Your nose, may feel a little out of sorts. Your intent was well meaning. And, to have a thread like this, opened, with comments, like that, from DocJohn, I Hope you can see, like many of us are expressing, how wanted here, you really are. I've seen other places...been through the ringer, myself. My advice, brush, the dirt off, and see this experience, with an open mind, and recognition of acceptance. ![]() Sent from my LG-MS910 using Tapatalk 2 |

Please don't go UM. We DO want to support you here. Sorry you had an unfortunate incident with your posting. Sounds like the mods are just trying to keep it a safe place.

It takes a lot to run a big ship like this. That is why I'm not just here, I prefer smaller groups where you learn to know who is who. It can get strict and impersonal at a big place. Not that I would know a better way.
As for all other sites being bad, I feel offended, I run a small and cozy site since 2002 and we have never really wronged anyone. The problem is that people WANT big places but they don't want the effect of a big place. They want the coziness of a small place but the activity level of a big place.
