I don't know where to start. Well, on New Years Eve after midnight, I was going to go to sleep and I guess I had a bad thought. I thought about my death. I don't now why. Ever since then I haven't been myself. I can't sleep, I lost my appettie, I feel tired everyday, and feel really down. Can someone give me advice on how to deal with this depression day by day? Most importantly, how can I get these thoughts out of my head. I have tried to do the things I like to do, but I am not happy doing them anymore.

I'm so sorry your having a hard time. One good thing to do is to find someone supportive and wise to talk to -- perhaps and uncle, parent, pastor, teacher, guidance counselor. Let someone in as much as you can. Discuss things in your life that make you happy and sad. Keep posting here too. Keep reaching out.

Hi, Erik.
esthers has pretty much summed up the best piece of advice you could get here right now. Reminders: We all feel sad(ness) sometimes and it does not necessarily indicate chemical depression. To me, death is this big part of life which the western culture is not comfortable with. Taboo. I like to think and analyse and discuss it with people a lot. One inevitable moment of loneliness and we're all gonna have to face it some day... I think it's pretty healthy to question and discuss it; the curiousity aroused by death is natural and shouldn't be regarded as morbid, insane or abnormal. Good Luck :-) |

erik, welcome! good job at reaching out for help. in depression, we can all have these "unwanted thoughts". however, when they're repetative or we embrace them by taking them further (liking the thought, finding comfort in it, planning, etc.)...that's when it can become a very serious issue.
is there anyone you can talk with? a counselor at school, a trusted teacher, a trusted adult...someone who can listen and offer comfort and support. in the meantime, keep posting with us ![]() question, did something bring this about? has something happened recently for you to feel so badly or did it come on "out of nowhere"? gl and please let us know. kd

Erik,
We are all here for you. Are you in school? You could start by talking to your school counselor?? They can help point you in some kind of direction! I totally understand that once you are down and feeling low it is very hard to get composed and back on top of your life. Please try to talk to someone that you trust and get their advise! If they could be a Dr of some sort would even be better! ( I know you dont want do hear that) Sometimes trying to work things out on our own is not the answer! Often we need others to help us .. just a little! We are always here for you!!! Kathy |

I'm sorry to hear how bad you're feeling... partly because I KNOW that feeling.
You gotta get some help for yourself. You came here, and that's a great first step. You need an adult to decide some stuff... we often don't have the answers for ourselves, and when we are depressed,,.everything we tell ourselves is a lie anyway. (nearly everything.) Odds are this has been deepening for some time... little disappointments, little sadnesses etc... and the New Year capped it off... hey EVERYONE else is happy and it's a new start... why am I the only one feeling so blue???? (type thinking) Not. Please call your MD if you can, or at the very least speak to your school counselor ...even if you aren't comfortable tell the counselor all of how you feel, that person can find help for you that you can speak to, ok? And you can always keep posting here, as often as you need. javascript:void(0) ![]() ![]() ![]()

Do you know anything about obsessive-compulsive disorder? Have you ever had intrusive, bad thoughts before? Try taking a couple of the quizzes on this site for depression and OCD to start. Then, if the feelings don't go away, see a counselor. Don't wait too long, though.

Welcome to the forums, Erik. This is a great place to come for love and support. I hope you will use the suggestion to talk with an adult you can trust or a therapist. Perhaps your school has a confidential counselor? Or your church?
I agree that there are probably a lot of little things that built up, making it seem as if the depression "came out of nowhere." Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

((((erik)))) and ((((cat))))) You two should chat more, being the same age....
I, too, like W2F was thinking about your church... if not the leader, then maybe the teacher of your Bible study class? Remember there are teen hotlines you can call when you need to!

Hi. i dont have any comments on your problem, but i have a problem of my own. im 19 and from england, and in 2001 my brother died. i slipped into perpetual depression which was worsened by drug use. by 2003 i was hearing and seeing stuff on TV, seeing stuff as i went to sleep and hearing voices. nearing the end of 2004 (say oct) i had a major panic attack (or severe, severe anxiety, which felt like panic) and it never left me. then was the first time i cried, as i was in a pit so deep i couldnt even imagine the end. so i go doctors then therapist then psychiatrist and am prescribed some mirtazapine. Now my crying has become unctrollable. its interferring with my pathetic life, as i anything makes me burst into tears. i was wondering whether anybody knows why this is? is it perhaps that i bottled up all the emotional battery over the past few years and now that the shelf of depression is lifting, the bottle falls off and smashes, and there's a %#@&#! storm or tears? i dont know what it is, i mean i used to feel A LOT worse, but now i'm tearful. post with any thoughts anyone

Hi Eric,
So sorry to hear your having these thoughts. Talking to a therapist, or a counselor would be the best way to go. Talk to one of your parents and see if they can set you up for an appointment. Some therapists are on a slideing scale for fees, and some are even free (this takes some looking). These thoughts that are making you depressed will disappear, or occur less frequently. Just be prepared to talk freely about everything that bothers you. They will do the rest. Hope you feel better soon. Colors ![]() ![]() |

i think that soon you'll come to peace with the thoughts and it wont bother you thinking sbout them. but do that for yourself, take control of your mind and emotions if you can.

Dear Erik,
Thre feelings you describe in 1st post are very consistent with signs&symptoms of depression. If they have not abated, strongly suggest you see a psychiatrist for an evaluation. Depression is a medical condition in most cases and needs to be treated with the right meds. Seek Professional help and be patient. Omni P.S. Please let us know how you make out. |
