I am morbidly obese so say the charts.
I want to feel better. I hate that my eatting is out of control and mostly fueled my my emotions.
I think if I could lose weight quickly I could feel better and be less depressed.
Of course...cutting off a leg would help for quick weight loss too!
I hate my fatself!

yeah, I know this feeling.

I mentioned in Health Support that I put an ad on Craigslist for a workout partner. It's been really helpful. We keep each other on track and it's much easier to make it to a workout if I know that someone is waiting for me there.

You could try that?

SJ,

I also thought about a diet aid. I checked with the pharmacist and was advised that no diet aid is good to take with AD's. Just wanted to let you know.

I was thinking about something similar, sj. TrimSpa or Nutrisystem, something to help me help myself.

However, I read/heard somewhere (of course, don't remember where) that those types of programs ultimately don't help. Part of losing weight is changing your eating and exercise habits.

If you take those changes out of the equation, while you may lose weight, eventually you are more likely to gain it all back (and sometimes more!). I need to change my eating habits, then I will lose weight (and have).

It is also important to note that you didn't get this way overnight, so it won't change over night (I've been overweight my whole life). Be gentle with yourself and allow for slips. I'm around if you ever need a diet buddy. Thinking about going on TrimSpa or something like that

Habit change is the most effetive thing, and also the most difficult. Going slow and steady seems to be very important. I've gone up and down a few times, and I always end up weighing more than ever at the end of the cycle.

I have been on them all - - - - - - SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!

The best thing that worked for me was walking and exercising 3-4 days a week, drinking 8-10 cups of water per day and eating right (3 balance meals & 2 healthy snacks).... I lost 75 pounds in 9 months.

But I can say the Weight Watchers Points System is AWESOME!!! - I lost 20 pounds on it last year and my sister lost 120 pounds in one year.... it is based on regular food that you buy at the store, you just stop eating when you reach your points for the day.

Thanks for sharing your story Rhapsody.
I know that eating right and exercising are essential.
I just feel so blobish right now that getting motivated to move is a chore.
Just walking across the office or upstairs winds me.
So, I was going to see if losing weight fast would help then do the exercise thing.
But, you are right...it takes discipline.
ARRGGG...I feel so ugly!

I know what you mean, SJ. I was having the same problem up until a few weeks ago. I felt too out of shape to exercise. It seems completely illogical, but our intellect doesn't always match our feelings.

Can I just say... I PUSHED myself over to the gym, and going even once made it easier to go the next time. Each time I go it gets (emotionally) easier and easier. The first time is the hardest.

And as I mentioned, having a gym buddy to hold me accountable has helped a lot!

I agree. I eat 9 times a day and am losing alot of weight in the process. My diet plan is the diabetic 2 diet given to me by my doctor when I wanted to lose weight but he wanted all my blood counts up where they belong. He told me one of the reasons fad diets (trimspa, grapefruit, slim fast and so on) don't work for long term weight management is because when a person goes on those type of diets the minute they eat a normal balanced diet the body sucks up those nutrients (and fat) that is has been missing and stores them for a "rainy day" so to speak so the person ends up gaining more then they were before starting those diets. He said the best way to fool the body into losing weight is to convince it that it has more food then it really needs by dividing a normal 2000 calorie diet into smaller and more freguent meals through out the day. Just as fast as the nutrients are being depleated they are being replenished so the body stops storing them as fat for a rainy day. On the diabetic 2 diet plan I lose about 5 -8 pounds a month. A person does not have to be diabetic to be on it, is great for high cholesterol people too and is a FDA/Physicians approved doiet plan and theres no extra foods to buy, cash fees to pay for and you can still eat the sweets, mcdonalds, carls jr, subways, tacos you name it.

I would like to say more, but I'm short on time, so I'll just mention that TrimSpa contains Ephedra (although I think they have an Ephedra-free version), and that can be dangerous. Others have given some good information, so I'll just say that what it all comes down to is eating healthy (not starving yourself) and exercising. I'm obese, too, but I've lost the weight before (not like I should have, but I'll talk about that another time), so I'll try to come back and offer a few good tips later. Best of luck, and try not to hate yourself...remember, you're more than your body weight. I hate myself sometimes, too, but I think I'm a pretty good person. Remember your good qualities.

According to WebMD, it is illegal to sell Ephedra in the United States. The FDA banned in beginning April 12, 2004. So I don't think TrimSpa or any diet aid contains it. However, you are right that self-esteem greatly impacts successful weightloss. If you don't like yourself, everything is a struggle.

I wish I could lose a lot of weight, too! Yeah, I'm "obese" according to the charts, too. I'm 5'4" or 5'5" and weigh something like 220 lbs. I wear a size 22. I don't like it at all. I've taken things in the past that really weren't good for me.

When I was younger there was this one thing that worked great, called Thinz Tabs. It worked wonders. Probably was banned, though, since I haven't been able to find it for some years now. Just my luck, eh?

Anyways, have you tried looking into ediets.com? I know it cost some money to go through that, but it's worth a shot. Yes, and exercise really does help, too. Keeps you stronger than you would be if you were just to diet and not do anything else.

I've tried the ephedra diet aids. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I'd get dizzy and my vision would start to fade and my heart would pound, and I'd be sweaty and jittery. Plus I'd still want to eat because it's more of an emotional urge than physical hunger for me.

Another thing - if you read the super fine print, all of those products say "for best results, exercise and eat sensibly." I think we'd all lost just as much weight if we ate right and exercised and left out the expensive pills.

Rather than spending $40 or more a month on diet aids, I would buy prepackaged meals like Lean Cuisine or South Beach Diet, and protein bars and shakes, to keep my portions in check. Not sure how I'll keep fighting the urges to snack between meals, on unhealthy junk. Hopefully it'll get easier with practice.

I do transcription for a Ph.D. who assesses people prior to undergoing bariatric surgery, and it's always "proper portion size, protein first, sip 64 ounces of water a day." There have been a few people who have done so well just altering their habits that they've decided to opt out of surgery.

The one thing that's been the biggest incentive has been seeing the comparison between how much I normally eat in any given day and the amount I should be eating. If I cut down to 3 scheduled meals and a couple of snacks and up the water, I'll see positive results pretty soon (knock wood).

Good luck Susan.

P.S. We've got a weight loss thread going in health support if you want to join in.

Don't do it, those supplements are at best a waste of money, at worst dangerous to your health.

What I would suggest, though, if you really are binging, is talking to your doctor about Topomax. It helps reduce the urge to binge, as well as the urge to purge.

Another thing you could look into is Overeaters Anonymous. I'm not a big fan, because they say you can't eat certan foods, but it can be helpful just to have a group of people around you who UNDERSTAND what you're going through. There are other groups, too, like ANAD, although those tend to be people with the Big Two eating disorders -- bulimia and anorexia.

Good luck.
