This is the place for you to tell us all how you feel about your state and why. I think my state, WV, pretty much sucks. Here's why:

1. WV is #1 in obesity
2. WV has been voted the most stressful state to live in, as well as the least desirable state to live in, and Charleston (WV's Capitol) was voted the most miserable place to live.
3. WV is #1 for prescription drug related deaths and is considered the prescription drug abuse capitol.
4. WV is the least college educated state in the country, with less than 20% possessing a Bachelor's degree.
5. WV is #1 in percentage of smokers.

I live in Texas County Missouri. For the most part its a great place to live. We are part of the Mark Twain National Forest as are the surrounding counties. The people here are basically decent people who believe in the constitution and are good patriots who just want to be allowed to live their lives. The only bad thing about this state, Texas county specifically is that per capita we are the highest producer of methamphetamine in tbe world....yes WORLD. So there is a drug problem in southern Missouri but isn't there a drug problem almost anywhere you go? The good thing is there aren't "pushers" so if u want it you have to go out intentionally looking for it. Otherwise I love my state and my county!

I live in New York. Honestly, depending on the part you live in, it can be dull to lovely. Lucky for me, I live where it is not completely suburban but also not a complete city.

If only the weather was a bit more stable...

North Carolina... facts... Hard to think of some. I sometimes think I hate living here. Then, I go somewhere (like Michigan or New York or Virginia) and find myself missing NC. I have a love/hate relationship with this place.

#1 In the spring, you literally cannot go anywhere without seeing dogwood trees in bloom. Sadly, they've been dying earlier and earlier each year for the past few years. The early deaths started during the year the bumblebees were mysteriously vanishing.
#2 NC used to produce a lot of tar.
#3 I could drive for like just an hour and see country, city, and beach. An hour the other way and eventually mountains.
#4 If you are an NC native, you have been to at least one 'pig pickin'. You may not like them (as I don't), but you have at least been to one.
#5 In fact, cook outs/barbecues are very common down here. Birthday? Cook out. Graduation party? Cook out. Baby shower? Cook out. Yeah.
#6 All those cigarettes in WV... I'm sorry. NC is the leading producer in tobacco. So, you have us to blame for many of those.

NC isn't too bad. I hate the town I live in. But once you get to the country areas, it's actually a pretty quaint place. People are often nice, and certain towns/cities have that... 'down home' feel you can't find often. It can be bothersome, though, being that a lot of them are right smack in the middle of the 'bible belt'. Makes it hard for a guy like me to ever er... 'fit in'.

Let's see, how to describe Kansas. Kansas is a land of contradictions. I usually describe it this way.

If you were to fall down on the sidewalk and you were in California, it would immediately be on the news with people screaming at the camera to help you and starting a fund raiser. If you fell in New York, people would stumble over you, give you a kick and be on their way because they have a long way to go and no time to get there. If you fell in Texas, they would help you, lift your wallet and claim to be your friend while stealing your credit cards. In Connecticut, they would help you up, give you a big hug and offer you something warm to drink.

But in Kansas, they would help you up, dust you off and without a word go on their way.

So we're oddly helpful and independent, but don't really make an issue of things ... but then there's the down side of that. We're so xenophobic that we've banned gay marriage, are the center of the abortion debate and demand that religion be taught as if it were science in schools.

So yeah, Kansas the land of "WTF!?"

Yeah, I gotta admit WV is a very pretty state and the people here are very down to earth and friendly, but everyone pretty much stays to themselves.

Yes...Kansas is heavily populated with catholics.

I'd add that it's windy too. And that there aren't many things to do aside from a decent zoo. I have nothing else positive to say about this place.

Texas - Wow it's big. I live in the center and it takes forever to get out of state. We have some wonderful cities. My favorites being Austin and Ft. Worth. We have everything from coastal region to mountans.

I've lived here all my life. Things I don't like about Texas: it's politics and the hot summers. But it is home and I don't think I could live anywhere else.

I do love when the bluebonnets bloom. They are awesome.

I would say Wichita is about it when it comes to stuff to do, but Wichita has quite a bit if you know where to look.

You can go to the Loony Bin, we have live comedy all the time and if comedy melodrama is your thing, there's Mosley Street Melodrama. Like cabaret shows? Old Town Cabaret is hilarious (and if you're a guy, it's easy to get to the restroom because there will only be 3 guys in the crowd). Old Town Final Friday is awesome for seeing local artists and it's best if you dig your way to the back of the shops, that's where the really cool stuff is at. Then there's the Museum of World Treasures (they have a scavenger hunt for the kids) and Exploration Place is a great science museum we go to all the time. Live music can be found at the Orpheum with some cool local artists.

But yeah, if you leave Wichita then you better be into wind or cows, because that's about it for the rest of the state. (Chicago claims to be the windy city, but the actual windiest city in the United States is Dodge City where the average wind speed is 13.9 mph ... and if you visit there, don't go to Boothill, it's a tourist trap.)

I've been all over the United States; from Connecticut to Florida to Mississippi to Texas to California and all places in between. Kansas is overall a quiet place where individually people are kind and friendly. But as they said in Men in Black, "A person is smart. But people are dumb, panicky and you know it."

For some reason we have a large population of people that think it's their business to tell others how to live their lives and I personally can't stand it. I'm always at the polls when we have an election trying to vote in more socially liberal candidates, but we always end up with idiots. So many of our state policies are downright bigoted and ugly.

If I could pick any state to live in the United States, I would pick Northern California or the New England states, preferably Connecticut or Maine. It seems that in Northern California the people become a little more "real", they quite trying to be something they aren't and they calm down compared to the L.A., San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland mega-cities. In Connecticut and Maine, the people just seemed to "live and let live". They were always friendly, concerned with their neighbors and ... my favorite part ... had some AMAZING food.

I live in Florida. Despite what the media may portray the state is not full of gun toting out to blow people away.

Many/most folks in the state relocated from somewhere else. That's both good and bad. It creates diversity, but there are also lots of folks who want things here to be the way it was "back home." I'm inclined to tell those folks if it was so bloody much better where you came from why don't you go back?!? The population swells dramatically in the cold months with the winter residents moving down to escape the cold and tourists doing the same.

There's a bit of everything in the state. Major metropolitan areas like Miami and Tampa. Several military bases. Beautiful beaches. Inland areas are equally pretty, but in a different way than the beaches. Theme parks out the ying-yang (bleh!).

I think it's telling that the number one industry is the tourist industry followed by agriculture. The state is full of that sort of contrast.

Lots of people complain about the heat and humidity. Gotta admit that it's both, but this ole lizard likes the heat.

Dennis, you asked if we would recommend people move to our state. I love living her, but the state is already over run so I don't encourage another to move here!
Thanks for this!

  1. SC weather can actually be cold. We're known for our 110+ degree (average 90 degree) weather, but visitors fail to realize that while not to the extent of the northern states - we are quite capable of reaching cold temperatures too, usually in February (actually reached a record low of 13 degrees this year).
  2. A large population of our state are die hard fans to football and there are often "inner"state rivalries at local events that encourage the separation of Gamecock fans and the Clemson fans.
  3. We say things like ma'am, darling, sug', sweety pie, bless your heart, ya'll, fixin' to, hold your horses, reckon', playing possum, etc.
  4. There is such a thing as southern hospitality and it's not uncommon for strangers to speak, nod, compliment you in passing (or even in lines at the store, at the gas station, etc.)
  5. This is not a good representation of all South Carolinians - but this totally happened to Miss Teen SC... poor girl.Tell us about your state

I live in Maine and I love my state. We have thousands of miles of coastline, lakes, mountains, trees, rivers. The cost of living is high compared to a lot of other places, but I haven't found anywhere else I want to be. We aren't densely populated like the rest of the East Coast, but we have a huge farm to table movement (i.e. really good food). There's also a ridiculous amount of cultural activities given the population. We mind our own business and it's okay to be a bit off. Some of that is changing as we get flooded from escapees from more densely populated areas, but I hope our poverty scares them off!

South Carolina. I hate that a lot of people misunderstand it so much. It's changed a lot. But the politics isn't great. Hopefully SC will turn into a blue state someday. Other than that, I love living here.

West Virginia's not too bad really. I live near Point Pleasant, whose claim to fame is Mothman, so... There's good and bad like everywhere else. We get lots of tourism in the fall cuz the foliage. There are a lot of scenic things here. Unfortunately we get a bad rap because of the West Virginia stereotype of us being stupid.
