I have had it as long as I can remember. However I have been in the habit of eating very little at a time. It seems that EVERY time I have a reasonable meal I am sick for hours on the toilet within ten minutes and off and on for at least two hours. Does anyone else have this kind of trouble? It is very distressing. Even the narcotics I take don't slow it down.

I don't have IBS, but I can sympathize to some degree -- most of my anemia meds are known for giving people "the runs." I will spare you any more details. IBS

What's weird for me is that several weeks ago, when my white count was pretty low, they told me to stay away from fresh fruits and vegetables. So I went a week without them, even though I had all this great fresh food in my fridge.

Next week, my white count was fine, and I was so happy, I came home and had a huge salad with a ton of vegetables in it, and an orange for dessert. I have had "the runs" ever since. Every time now that I eat a fruit or vegetable, I am on the pot in about 30 seconds.

Blah. It's no fun, I know!

I can't seem to identify many foods. Dairy of course. But Candy I do sometimes have the same reaction with fruits and veggies which are main staples in my diet. I know that if I eat rice and oatmeal it calms things down. I just feel awful. Now please pardon the pun here but it takes so much out of me!

Red, could you ask your sister what foods trigger her? Also, I really am not wanting to be gross here but do others have times when it's just plain water?

It makes me feel, well, sick. Painful and worn out.

Thanks for the help.

IBS I totally SO do not need another disease.......

Dairy does it to me in an instant, and yes, sometimes I get just plain water. (ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, I know!) I'll give the rice and oatmeal a try.

somethings she can eat raw, other things have to be cooked,Try to limit things in high fiber, try this write down the things that bother you the most and limit them then write down the things that are ok and no problems with ,try them cooked and uncooked ,If you are founding this that are ok with your system then eat them if they raise heck with you then limit them or avoid all together. I know this IBD is now fun I have watch my sister go through alot with this she also has crone's disease on top of it . I hope this helps. Also try google and do a search on IBD for diets ,how to cope ect..

Hi Wisewoman
I have IBS-c/ Diverticulosis, I have to really watch how and what I eat. Fatty foods are a trigger food. But I've been told to advoid eating to much at one sitting. It over stimulates your diagestive system. Causing the wonderful run to the bathroom. ( I know all the clean public restrooms within 50 miles) I'm on Zelnorm now to stay regular and then Elavil for nerve pain in my stomach. All I can say is eat high fiber foods and small meals 4-5 times a day. That way your system doesn't get overloaded all at once. Good Luck, I hope it gets better for you soon.

wisewoman,

Yeah, I have IBS, asthma, high blood pressure - all stress related.

Got to keep the stress levels down some how.

Now how do we do that? IBS

Does that mean you are taking me on a relaxing trip to a warm climate? Oh well, I noticed that sugar makes it much worse. I also know that when it's acting up it's acting up. I had whole wheat toast this morning and my body acted like I had fed it a milkshake. Frustrating.

Hi wisewoman,

Count me into the IBS team, I've been there for about 5 years now. I went through the whole diet and exercise thing, and in the end (gosh, another scatological pun) I found that it didn't make any difference.

The only thing that helped was slowing down my whole lifestyle, and resting my brain a bit. I'm almost sure that IBS is linked to anxiety more than anything.

At least you still have your sense of humour!

Cheers, M

You do have to figure out what it is that you are ingesting that is causing the IBS.

After 4 months of discontinuing Coca~Cola, I've felt fine. I love that stuff, too! I think it was the phosphoric acid that was tearing up my digestive system.

A good way to keep stress levels down? Exercise! It's not only a good way to feel better physically, but mentally as well. I agree that a lot of illnesses are caused by stress, I'm not sure about IBS but I would think stress would contribute. I was eating prunes daily, and I was feeling great and then I started feeling bloated, so I stopped. I am confused as far as the whole fiber thing, I mean yeah it keeps you regular but then sometimes it has that bloating effect. I have heard the same thing can happen with wheat products. I guess it all depends on your body as an individual. I do know one thing though, anything sugar free with the ingredients mannitol and sorbital will surely make you run for the bathroom. I feel sick after ingesting sugarfree stuff so now I avoid it. I hope everyone here finds what works for them, I am still always searching for ways to feel better in all aspects!

Jennie, the only real way to find out what causes you problems is to keep a food journal. Right everything down, Even down to chewwing gum. ( when you chew gum you swolloe air which can upset your system as well) Keep track of anything you put in your mouth. Then right down how you are feeling. Bloating, gas, running for the restroom. Then also right down anything that might of caused you any stress during the day. That way you have a complete look at all the factors that could trigger the IBS. I would keep a journal for at least a month. Sometimes IBS can be triggered by PMS as well. Then you can sit down and look at everything that's triggering you and you then could try cutting the things out you think triggered you and see it that helps any.

Good Luck, Monty

I have had Ulcerative Colits and IBS for years. Yes, you can have both at the same time.

When things are out of control, use the BRAT diet = Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast.

I can't handle bananas or applesauce, but most people can.

The only kind of "safe" artificial sweeteners are Splenda and the pink kind. Learn to read every label so you can make sure you don't have anything with nutrasweet, sorbital, manital, or anything like it. I get so ill from accidentally drinking something with nutrasweet that I have to go to the hospital.

Eat tiny meals. Avoid fat, and high fiber until you've seen a Dr. . My system just wouldn't take it. Do not eat anything raw. Nothing!!!!!

Avoid preservatives. Don't chew gum and don't drink out of a straw. It puts air in your system and makes IBS worse.

I suggest whole heartedly that you go to your Dr and ask for some meds. They can make life worth living again.

I have a new Dr and new meds. I am actually eating salads for the first time in years. I have to cut the lettuce and tomatoes into paper thin strips, but it works and tastes oh, so good.

If you have questions, please just ask.

I'm so sorry that all of you are suffering. I had to carry emergency wipes and clothing for years. Now, life is so much better.

Hugs,

Jan

Thankyou, Sugin, Monty, Myzen and Jan for all of the support on a rather embarrassing issue. Yes, I have had the accidents. I had IBS all day today and didn't really do anything yesterday that should have caused it.

When I have to see doc again I will speak with her about it. I have a few things in my diet that need to change and I want to start that immediately. Does anyone know if green tea has caffeine? I have to wean myself off caffeine and I wondered if greentea has it I could switch because it is less irritating to my system.

I also notice, and figure this out, when I am drinking my gallons of water daily the IBS is not as bad?

weird stuff. However, I have had this all of my life, it's just gotten worse.

Keep drinking that water. It's the best thing you can do for yourself. Water helps the digestive system work the way it's suppose to.

Thanks Monty and Jan. I am a water freak, I am addicted to caffeine and want to cut down. I only have it in the morning but okay, I will admit it, the source is diet soda and that stuff is bad for me. Today I got some iced green tea. Anyone know how I can make it at home and use a little honey?

Observations, sugar gos right through me. That's why docs used to tell moms with constipated babies to give them a little karo syrup.

If I eat vegetables with rice I am less apt to react severely.

I hate the crampy pain stuff.

Hi Jan,

What IBS meds did you get? I was prescribed some anti-spasmodics but they didn't help at all, to be honest.

I respect your positive attitude so much, these are rotten conditions to cope with and we just have to get on with it.

Good thoughts, M IBS
