Just curious to know what others were put on. I was on Paxil and then got switched to Prozac.

Which one were you put on and how effective was it for you?

I've been put on Zoloft. It's only been about 3 weeks so I haven't seen much improvement. My Pdoc says it's the most tested and successful for OCD but who knows.

So far the side effects have been minimal. I'm hoping it stays that way as I increase the dose. We are working on getting it up to around 150mg and I am at 50mg.

I have been noticing a lift on my depression but my anxiety hasn't improved much at all.

Good luck!

I've been on most of the OCD drugs, except Zoloft. I used to be on one or another, but now I get combinations. I'm on Anafranil (actually, it's the generic, Clomipramine, because the original makers of Anafranil dropped it), Xanax (generic, Alprazolam), and Citralopram (that's the generic name; I forget the brand name). I was on Risperdal, but my physician felt I should get off some of the drugs I'm on, so my pdoc let me wean off of it, and I'm also weaning off the Citralopram. Those are actually for OCD and panic disorder. I'm also on other meds for physical conditions.

When I first took Anafranil, years and years ago, when it was still being made, it worked remarkably well. I didn't think it was helping much after a few weeks, but then one day, I woke up and my head was tingling. I realized I didn't feel so "OCDish" and, over time, I seemed to be about 85% better. Other drugs have helped quite a bit (like Paxil), but they had side effects that were too problematic. That's a laugh--all of them have side effects that are too problematic, but I can't function without the meds. I have almost no sex drive, and it depresses me greatly. I miss that eager, young girl I once was.

Effexor really worked but I couldn't tolerate the side effects. Now I take Cipralex. It hasn't eradicated all my symptoms, but I can manage. Maybe I need to increase the dose.

Luvox 100mg a day for one year about 20 yrs ago, and free for the most part to where it doesn't affect the people around me! It started as anxiety, loss of appetite, loss of control over my life, wouldn't cross these narrow bridges in Louisiana, wouldn't touch door knobs or get out of house during flu season nor talk to anyone that was sick; which included my sister over the phone 250 miles away due to her children having stomach virus! I was in my second year as a recovering addict and was having my symptoms treated with 5-6 different meds; still wouldn't cross bridge, eat, etc. .. Finally tried my sponsors Dr, who took me off all the meds and put me on Luvox, a new drug at the time. Three days later, I was able to cross bridge! In two weeks, I could do everything my OCD had prevented me from doing! I just needed a Dr that would listen, plus I had just got put on my husband's insurance!! I still have some OCD without the anxiety over small things that don't interfere with my daily life!

I've never had anything directly for OCD, but I was on Citalipram, some years ago, which apparently helps with OCD, too, ... did sod all for me, however. Honestly, I don't think there's really any medication that will really work for OCD. Lowering anxiety and/or improving mood helps, in some/all cases, but as for the rest, ... seems like CBT is the go-to treatment. I just can't imagine a pill doing anything for OCD, ... how can a pill change the core beliefs that got us in this predicament in the first place? My brain does not understand that one. I get that taking medication to improve mood (SSRIs) and anti-anxiety medication would help OCD by proxy.

I agree,i have many different diagnosis with major ocd and all the docs i have seen told me that there's not an actual medicine for it. I have been on almost every anti depressant and anti anxiety, but nothing helps my ocd at all. I really wish i could find something that would.

Im on Tegretol for my Bipolar and now we are resucing my effexor as my Pdoc says although it is an SRNI it acts more like an SSRI at a lower dose of 70mg and might help with my Pure O and musical hallucinosis.

If that doesnt work we are going to try Cymbalta

I thank you for letting me know that there are medications for my ocd. I have lived with it for years along with many other diagnosis and have never been given anything for it. I have been on almost every antdepressant until finally celexa was given for my bipolar and it didn't help my ocd at all. I finally have got an appointment with a new psychiatrist on the 27th and have to get on some new meds to help me, but i now know there is help. Thank you so much!

That's because you're just putting new plasters on an old wound; I'm sure it works well in some scenarios (such as when you are receiving psychological treatment alongside medicinal treatment) but I think you might as well treat the wound and hopefully be done with it, or at least learn ways to better cope and understand it. That's how I see it, anyway. Have you had any psychological treatment, like CBT?

I have just two weeks ago been able to get back into a therapist, so it is just starting out and i haven't seen a pdoc in over five years, but was getting my medicines from my primary doctor. But i am excited about the fact that i have my first appointment next. I hope it all goes well. What is that cbt you are talking about?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It's sorta when you talk over your problems with a T and try that approach. Try to rewire your thinking and rationalize things. Sometimes instead of medication, and sometimes with the help of medication. For me, it's 50% meds and 50% CBT.

I was started with SSRIs and went through several which didn't work. So then we started on the atypical kind, like Effexor. I really liked Effexor but after a while it created more problems than good. Now I'm on Cymbalta 60mg and it's working great. With my OCD compulsions (particularly hair pulling and other BFRBs) naltroxone helps (it's a medication that helps with addictive behaviors, often used for alcoholism and drug use) and I've recently started a natural vegetarian/vegan friendly over-the-counter medication called NAC that has been great so far. I really love it. I had my first pull free day last weekend in well over a year!

Prozac, has worked miracles for me. Sometimes I still get anxiety attacks though so my pdoc prescribed Rivotril to take as needed, that works marvelous aswell, kills an anxiety attack in 30 minutes to an hour.

Prozac 80mg seems to do really well for me and with anxiety, It's better than benzos in effectiveness and my anxiety was really bad.

Currently 40mg of Prozac. I don't think it really does much for my OCD. I think it helps with depression though.

I spent about 6 months on Xyprexa and Klonopin and I weaned myself off of them because I just couldn't function on them. They made me into a zombie and I just felt numb all the time.

I was on 50mg Lustral (Sertraline), then raised to 100mg. That really help with my anxiety but no noticeable help for my OCD. Then my doc changed me to Clomipramine (raised by 10mg per week) 50mg.

I've been on several medications for OCD and panic disorder. Clomipramine helped the best, and that is what I'm on now, along with Xanax (generic) for the panic. Paxil also helped me, but I had odd side effects from it. Other meds I've been on include Luvox, Celexa, Pamelor liquid (my very first med, but that was for anxiety only; I hadn't been diagnosed with OCD yet then), Risperdal, and others.
