I haven't been matched with anyone yet. Apparently my mixed heritage makes a match tough. That was part of the reason I signed up; I had read that it is really hard to find a match for mixed race people.
Thanks for reminding me about this. I heard this on the radio a while ago, that mixed race folks have a harder time finding a bone marrow match. They were talking about a specific kid and kept saying "mixed race, mixed race, no match, mixed race" and I was screaming at the radio, WHICH RACES? I'm also mixed (and not a terribly uncommon mix), and felt kind of dismayed because if they'd been willing to disclose their racial mix, it might push people with the same background harder to go register. And naturally I promptly forgot to do anything about it afterward .

I kind of wonder how it will be when I have kids, for whom there will be a third distinct ethnic group added on. As my uncle once said, "I can't wait until we're all the same shade of brown."

Back when I had it done, I think they took a blood sample. I went to the organization's office and they took some fluid from me, but I honestly don't remember which fluid or scraping was done now.

It was back in the mid 80's. A lot has changed in the transplant game since then.
(after my mother died suddenly and her organs were donated, my family has been involved in drumming up donation awareness sorts of stuff)

MKAC, what an awesome gift - to become a bone marrow donor! I thought to myself - I don't have much to give right now due to my own life circumstances, and this is a wonderful way I can give!

Unfortunately, I don't meet the medical criteria - due to my herniated discs and continuous pain med regimen....Wahhh.

But I will certainly spread the word to others...Stirring up awareness, in itself, is a gift, right?

I changed my profile pic to one of the drawings that I had made by my illustrator for the book I've been writing....Migraine hell...It's appropriate for how I've been feeling the last week.

Yeah the "mixed race" thing frustrates me also sometimes. Around here it mostly used for African american and white. So the mix I am is pretty uncommon around here. And when the mix includes Native american, there is the added complication of all the different nations being quite different genetically sometimes.

Hi all,
I'll have to catch up on the couch later. I have a 12+ hour day at work... reports to write for a meeting that starts in three hours and I've felt nauseous all day. Managed to eat a bit of food but then felt incredibly sick. Trying some Sierra Mist right now. I know we normally pocket ride to t, but anyone want to pocket ride to my ultrasound tomorrow? I will bring snacks!

Sconnie! Ultrasounds are super annoying, I almost had a panic attack when I went to get one done a few months ago :s -jumps in with everyone else tomorrow-

I have T tonight in 2 hrs... Back to being super anxious before appts. Gahh. Anxiety just will not let go of the grip it has on me. Would it be too much to ask for some 'pocket riders' myself tonight? Super nervous, haven't seen her in 2 weeks, routine broken and needs to be fixed but won't be able to get fixed until after christmas..
