The majority of my counsellors/therapists have been female: 4-2. The first male T I worked with was not great, as he chose the moment just after I'd spread an A2 flow chart out on the floor of his office to tell me that he would soon be retiring. (Same guy shut me down in an earlier conversation, with the phrase 'You don't have intrusive thoughts, do you?')

I do, I just didn't know what to call them then!

My T told me once that there are more females than males in the profession. (My T is male.)
Thanks for this!

Both my T's are male and I'm female. My experience with a female T was a disaster but I think she was a bad T and not because she was female.I've had treatments with other women practitioners that have been OK. I think when it comes to T's I prefer men.

Both are male. Almost all of the ones I've had in the 39 years I've had them have been male. And I'm female.

Any reason why? I know many have preferences. I myself had to have a male. I can not open up with women. I'd sit in silence LOL

I am female & my t is male. I wouldn't have chosen a male, with my past trauma, but I was referred initially from work. I now pay privately & stayed with him. Most T's around are female. Even my EMDR therapist was male too. I actually think that it's been a good thing as I can see that at least one male in this world isn't going to abuse me.

This is a timely question for me. I'm female, and as of a few days ago I was seeing a female T and a male marriage counselor. I've been dealing with some negative maternal transference stuff with T and some pretty strong (generally positive/idealized) paternal (and a bit of erotic) transference for MC. I haven't had too much success dealing with the transference (for either) with current T. So I recently contacted another T to see for a bit while I take a break from current T. He's male. So, I guess starting next week, male T (assuming he works out) and male MC. I often find it easier to talk to men than women, incidentally.

I'm the same, I'm female and purposely chose a male therapist. Nothing against females, I just can't talk to someone I subconsciously view in a mother role when I'm dealing with abusive mom issues.

That's exactly what I'm saying too... my mom is horrible and my grandma as well, I can speak to women but I shut down when it comes to feeling like I can open up to them....

I'm female and I have a male T... I prefer a male T. I haven't really worked out why that is at this point.

Male therapist. I'm female. I tried several female therapist and they were either pretty incompetent or unprofessional (so much so that I only saw them a couple of times and ran away as fast as I could). I've had mostly positive experiences with male therapist (a couple I didn't continue with because they were like talking to a doorpost). I have nothing against female therapist except I'm done wasting money trying to find one worth paying. Really consider it mostly bad luck of the draw, not that it was a female thing -- just coincidental.

I know that you asked stopdog (why he would never hire a male T) but I wanted to weigh in on this since I too would not hire a male therapist. I've had them before and it has never gone well for a variety of reasons, however, one thing that I've discovered is that I tend to get competitive with other men - something I don't do with women.

I have a male counselor. I am female. I have been seeing him for 10 months. He has gotten more out of me than two female counselors combined. Not sure why, but I can open up to him easier.
Thanks for this!

R is male and I'm a girl.

Personally I find it easier to talk to men then women. I know I would feel more uncomfortable with a female. I've had a wild rebellious streak and did quite a few crazy things I'm not exactly proud of- like agreeing to be a friend with benefits, going out on a lot of tinder meet ups etc.

R has previously told me that I can easily seduce and charm people. Whilst I've never tried to flirt with him-I am guilty of flirting with almost every man that used to walk past me, whether I thought he was attractive or not, simply because I liked the attention I got.

Most of my abuse was from my father. I'm not the same as I was back then, but I would just feel more judged by a woman sharing all of that.
