My partner and I both have BPD.
On Saturday one of our cats had a seizure and he didn’t make it. My partner has been taking it very hard. He says it’s a punishment.
He is very stressed out about the house being messy. We have both been off of our meds. I have been trying to get us back on them but it is hard to remember. I can’t even keep my car clean. How do I help keep the house clean? I have ideas but it would be a long slow process. He says where is the time to do it. I think we need some help. But he is embarrassed to ask for help. I just don’t think the two of us can do it on our own being in this state mentally. He wants to drink and do drugs to cope , and I know that is a bad idea but I want it too. He says even if we got it cleaned it would just go back to the way it is in a week.
We are devastated about losing our cat.
Possible trigger:
I don’t want to leave him alone too long so I will leave it at that.

Welcome to MSF @PolkadotDog62 - I am sorry for the loss of your cat. Pets can be like family members and when they die grief can be strong.

It must be a strain on you to feel responsible for your partner's well being. What about joining a pet loss support group? You can google the options by searching on

It sounds like you already know the disadvantages of intoxicants - they only provide temporary relief and after the high wears off they act as depressants and the problems seem to multiply.

What does your partner think they are being punished for?

By BPD, do you mean bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder? Probably the former since you mentioned needing to be on meds?
