I just watched the movie Evan Almighty. It was really cute.

In the movie God is portrayed as a black man and that really got me thinking.

What does God/Jesus really look like?

Not that color matters at all I don't want anyone to think that.

I am just wondering about this.

Also, If God is really black then why was there the discrimination in the past towards african americans and why do a few people today even still have problems accepting them. That makes no sense to me. If God was black you would think people would think of it as a blessing. Even though we are all supposed to be the same.

I have always thought of Jesus as a thin white man with long brown hair and a beard in a robe with sandals. Thats how I have always been shown him.

I am wondering two things though.

one. Is there anywhere in the bible or something that really tells us what he looks like or how do we know?
two. what do you guys think of when you think of God/Jesus?

Interesting question...

I've always been brought up with the same 'view' of what Jesus looked like that you have. As for God, He is able to take any form he so chooses... so yeah, not so great with imagining Him.

But if you're asking historically, (and this is just me with one Historical Jesus class under my belt) ... Jesus probably wasn't the most "white" or Caucasian person, simply from where he lived. Probably a darker complexion. But that's all I can say really.

He is who He is, He is who you imagine Him to be.

I found some interesting websites that may answer your questions (or they may not, and if that's the case, many apologies).

That is a cute movie. There have been a few movies portraying God as a black man, or even as a black woman. I think that those movies choose a non-traditional image on purpose to catch our attention and to get us to think about what we might assume or think that we know.

Would you be interested in the account of someone who has seen God? Here is a link to a video. It's downloading pretty slow for me, but my computer is slow at downloading videos. I haven't gotten far enough to see the images yet of God's appearance, but I know the story.

http://jesuschrist.lds.org/SonOfGod/...he-restoration

I have been taught that we were created in the image of God, and also that the more we follow Him and become like Him, the more we will look like Him. I don't know how literal that is - I don't really think it means we would look exactly like him, as I think we will have our own features, but I have been taught that Jesus looks the same as Heavenly Father.

"No man has seen God at any time." (This refers to all three aspects of Him: Father, Son,and Holy Spirit.)
"God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." (So we know that one aspect of God is the Holy Spirit, but also we tend to believe that God the Father is a Great Spirit beyond our comprehension now.)

We know that Christ, God the Son, looked just like the other Jewish people. Remember how Judas Iscariot had to "point him out" to the soldiers by kissing Him? He was of Jewish descent in that respect. Just as short/tall, probably dark skinned like them when being in the sun all day, and earlier as a carpenter, and facial features just as they had. His tongue was of the language of the day, probably aramaic greek. He didn't have blond hair and blue eyes. He might have had reddish hair, as that was a common trait (remember Jacob and Esau?) and being in the sun again... but most likely did have brown eyes and dark hair. I'm sure he was the healthiest any person could be, and that would mean a lean, strong body too.

It is widely held by theologians that the "in the image" refers to us physically, to being triune. We have body, mind, spirit. With regards to attributes, we were also sinless, and able to fellowship with God. You can't fellowship with someone "beneath" or "above" you. You can be friendly, acquaintances, but for true fellowship, you have to have someone who is on the same page, just like you. So I believe that we were created with full intelligence.(Think how scientists say we only use a very small percentage of our brain's ability? I think that's because of the fall into sin.)

I imagine him like you described just because that's what I've been taught he looks like. I'm really not sure if I should believe that because how do they know what he looks like? Since the Bible never tells us what he looks like, I guess it's up to us to imagine what he looks like for ourselves.

No one has superiority over others. The Holy Quran states:

O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female; and
We have made you into tribes and sub-tribes for the sake of easy
recognition. Verily, the most honourable among you, in the sight
of Allah, is the most righteous among you. Surely, Allah is All-
Knowing, All-Aware. Ch. 49: Al-Hujurat: 14.

and:

O ye who believe! Let not one people deride another people, haply
they may be better than they, nor let one group of women deride
other women, haply they may be better than them. And do not
defame your people nor call one another by nick-names. It is
indeed bad to fall back into the malpractice of ignorant days after
having believed; and those who repent not, such are the
wrongdoers. Ch. 49: Al-Hujurat: 12

Allah is the Light of the heavens and of the earth. His light is as if
there were a lustrous niche, wherein is a lamp contained in a
crystal globe, the globe as bright as a glittering star. The lamp is
lit with the oil of a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the East nor of
the West. The oil would well-nigh glow forth even though no fire
were to touch it. Light upon light! Allah guides to His light
whomsoever He wills. And Allah sets forth parables for men and
Allah knows all things full well. Ch. 24: Al-Nur: 36

personally because i think we all often forget what is important and what really matters - worshipping God - and get sucked into the smallness of this world due to our egos. We tend to think that other people are key to our happiness/unhappiness, wealth/poverty etc and forget that it is God that ultimately decides. It seems to be a great human flaw to need to put down others in order to feel in control. But we should all remember that in the end who you are and what you do has no effect on what will happen to me and how i will be judged. I am only responsible for my sins.
Plus I guess within these global racial conflicts there must be some individuals that have been given the chance to stand up for what they believe in and therefore be a example to others.

"First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist - so I said nothing.
Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat - so I did nothing.
Then they came for the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist.
And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew - so I did little.
Then when they came for me, there was no one left who could stand up for me."

Pastor Martin Niemöller
(Lutheran pastor and Holocaust Survivor)

Was there not a real life story of a priest in a concentration camp who gave up his life to save a father who had children? I think i remember reading that somewhere. That is an inspirational and thought-provoking story.

IMHO, no one can know what The Creator looks like. He has no form as He is a spirit, too powerful, too omnipresent to be contained in any shape or form. That doesn't mean that if He chose to, He couldn't take any form He wished. IMO, it's dangerous to try and put a face to the Almighty God.

As for Jesus:

Isa 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Makes me cry when I read those words. It hurts my heart to it's very core! But I love Him all the more.

He was a Jewish man. While there are blonde, blue eyes Jews, the majority have dark, curly hair. I picture Him quite slender since he didn't eat regular meals, sinuey and with callused hands from hard work, not much taller than I (5'3") with big, soulful eyes full of pain and sorrow one minute and almost overflowing with tears from the depth of love He feels for us, so gentle and so caring... beyond description.

I don't think anyone has ever described the face of God. However, according to the Bible we know Jesus had nappy hair, lol. Doesn't it say somewhere he had hair like lamb's wool and feet like polished brass?

P.S. - Nuttin' wrong with nappy hair Gods features

If I could descibe perfection it would be the humblest beginning to this impossible task with words.

But if I could put an image to the greatest moment of Joy I have experienced in this tiny slice of time I have been here,,,it "may" equal one stroke of the brush upon the most inoquous corner of any Monet'...

This breathing heart has no clue,,but an abundance of Faith...

muffy, lol yeah I just thought it was kind of selfish that some people automatically see him as white when there are so many different races and colors out there.

Reminds me of a joke:

A first-grade class was drawing. One little boy was really going at it. The teacher walked by and said:"What are you drawing, Johnny?"
"I'm drawing a picture of God!" "Son, no one knows what God looks like." "They will when I'm done!" Gods features Gods features Gods features Gods features Gods features

I can tell you exactly what He looks like:

We'll start with his hands which clearly show that they know the meaning of a hard days work. As they are turned upward (the stance of utter acceptance) we can see that they are callused and strong. Long stretching fingers reach out, bidding us to come closer. It is the hands that get us close enough to see His face.

Here we find the richness of Him, in the depths of eyes that belie understanding for their clarity and penetrating, rich darkness. We can see ourselves most clearly here, as He Himself sees us; spotless and without blemish.

To touch His face now my hands reach up and caress the rugged skin turned brown and browner still (for I believe that my Jesus was an outdoorsy fellow) by the sun. The corners of His mouth turn up as I tickle what beard scruffs his face, and I find joy even here, in the winkles of his skin.

By now I am sitting on His lap, in His arms. I may well come boldly into the throne room, but to climb into the lap of the lover of my soul, of my best friend, there is no need for boldness. As I stood the length away, all He required was that I wanted to come, and then he bade me as He did Peter on the lake those many years ago. Beneath me, He is strong, cradling and SAFE. I know I CANNOT fall from this position, here in His arms. Around me, those same strong arms that later held Him to the cross, hold me snugly so that I know this is where I belong.

I am totally accepted.

I am utterly known.

I am looking into His face and He into mine.

This is what Jesus looks like.
