Hey everyone,
I just joined and found this forum and am in my twenties. In the past, I have frequently remembered many dreams that I have had while asleep. For the past year, though, I haven't been remembering my dreams as often. Nevertheless, I still remember dreams from time to time and think that it is interesting to attempt interpreting them. I have had many recurring dreams throughout my life, however I haven't really had many of those in the past year. I have had fun dreams, and I have had dreams that scared me. Has anyone else had a recurring dream of exploring a house that is similar, yet always has something different in each dream like an additional or secret room? Most of the time, I am exploring and discovering new parts of the building/house. Sometimes, more recently, I am exploring but eventually something or someone starts chasing me and I am exploring to find better places to hide and how to get out of the house. The most scary dream of this type that I had did not involve chasing, but an unexpected twist of events. I was exploring a new building in which the rooms had rocky type walls that were fun to climb on. This exploring went on for a while until my grandmother appeared and wanted me to go to the basement to investigate something with her. I was a bit reluctant, but still agreed to go with her. When we arrived down in the basement (it was spacious, but unfinished with concrete walls and half windows), there were two boys (around 10 yrs old in appearance) standing in the middle of the room. I would guess that my grandma and I were about 20 feet away from them. I felt uneasy after noticing that one of the boys was staring at me with deep hatred. This boy was purple and looked like a demon as he had strange curly horns like those of a ram on either side in place of his ears. My grandma says that everything is okay and approaches the boys as if she notices nothing of the purple demon looking one. As she is walking towards them, I bolt for the door, which somehow was now in a loft with a ladder to the loft. As I almost reach the top of the ladder, the demon boy appears in the loft and pushes the ladder (with me still on it) backwards. After this, I immediately woke up with my heart racing. That was the first dream that I remember ever having any demons of any sort in it. I haven't had any dreams quite as scary since then, though.

i have always understood dreams with houses to represent the self. the basement is the subconscious. people chasing you is perceived danger from others. the demon could be your own demons. purple is typical spiritual in nature and climbing up into a loft represents your higher self.
grandma could be a guide or role model for you, support system. i would guess that maybe you are on a journey seeking your higher self yet feel there are demons from your past that are blocking your way preventing you from reaching your goal. thats all i got...lol |

Thank you for your response. I never thought about the basement representing the subconscious, although I don't think that I have remembered any other dreams where I went into the basement. I would not consider my grandmother a guide or role model since I don't agree with a lot of her beliefs, and she is part of the reason my mom was messed up which caused me additional stress.
However, the person that is usually chasing me in my dreams is my younger sister (she made my life hell when I was younger) and I think my dreams of her chasing me didn't start until after I moved out of my house (started college). If your idea about the demons being something from my past that is blocking me, I wonder if it could have anything to do with the missing memories that I have from my childhood. I want to regain them so that I know what happened, though I am not sure if I am ready yet. At the same time, recovering those memories could help me heal from it. I honestly wondered if the dream could have been a partial memory. Maybe my younger sister was the evil demon child, and I was the other? Maybe it was some sort of memory that involved my grandmother? Maybe the other child was actually my other sister (the one that was nicer) and something bad happened in the basement? I am just throwing out ideas. I can't know anything for sure until I can remember things. I feel like a normal person would get super emotional talking about things like this, but I think I am over the anxiety and fear of not knowing, so I am perfectly fine with talking about it.

The purple demon was a part of yourself that could not hear. Grandmother is your wiser self that understood the demon self. Your demon self keeps you off balance, thus your not reaching higher understanding and light.

Hmm... I don't know if I like to think of myself as part demon, lol. I also don't think that I would look at myself with such hateful eyes. I also distinctively remember that the grandmother in my dream had red hair. I don't have red hair.
Thanks for the input. Am I taking your words too literally? I could see that they might make sense if the purple thing was supposed to be trying to tell me something, though I don't think that I agree about the grandmother being my "wiser self that understood the demon self." I remember feeling like nobody would listen to me in the dream though, and then due to nobody listening to me, I end up being pushed off of a ladder and most likely dead. If I were listened to in my dream, we wouldn't have gone into the basement, thus I would have lived.

Never take the symbols in a dream literally. This dream is about hearing. Grand mothers usually represent wisdom. In this dream she is the wiser part of you, red hair and all. Do you do not listen to others, because you feel they do not listen to you?

I have some trust issues, yes. But, I have learned over the years that listening to others is not typically a good thing. My sister and mom constantly put me down when I was younger and I foolishly believed everything they said, including that everyone hated me which was not true. So, I try to be wary of anything negative that someone tries to have me believe now.

I guess the main thing I can't accept is that my grandmother is supposed to be the wiser part of me. Maybe if it was my grandmother on my dad's side, I would be okay with that, but idk. I just feel uneasy when thinking about it. Why would my subconscious consider her to be the wiser? I guess it just confuses me. She has been nice to me for what I can remember, although I have some blanks. I wonder if I am at fault for not understanding, or if something else is the problem. I don't think that I ever really made a connection with her I guess. Or my great grandparents that died. I feel like I should have felt some grief over their deaths but I didn't. Maybe it is because I cannot remember them. They felt like strangers to me. Now that I think about it, my grandma feels kind of like a stranger to me as well. Kind of depressing, ha.

Just look at the grandmother being your wiser self. No need to connect it to the real person in real life. However there are a few things about her in real life you and relate to her with. This why your mind projected her into your dreams. But still, the grandmother in the dream mirrors you, rather than the real person, in real life.

Sorry for being so defensive earlier. I am considering that if the grandmother was indeed a guide, that maybe the dream was telling me that I should not be afraid to explore my past anymore. And, that if I keep running away from the things that frighten me, eventually it will lead to my death or failure. I am beginning to remember some things that are rather peculiar, but have not figured out the cause for my major issues. I feel like the memories of my childhood that I have hidden in the back of my mind are still haunting me and I need to face them. I feel like I am ready to take them on, but need a guide to help me uncover them. Maybe this guide is the therapist that I will hopefully see soon.

That could be, remember you also have a guide in you too. I wish you the best on your healing journey.

Keep in mind that it is your unconscious that chooses the symbols in the dream. So your conscious relationship with your grandmother is one thing, but your unconscious may sense something about her that resonates with something in you. This could be her wisdom from living through many experiences.
Your demon self is unconscious as well, most likely. It's a symbol for times of the day that you act a certain way or say certain things that your unconscious notices but your conscious ego does not. Your unconscious chooses the symbol to represent the part of you from which these things come. |

No, I use the word "demon" with no prejudice. I mean the part of you that your dream self chose to represent with the boy who you said looked like a demon. This could actually represent positive power but perhaps scares your ego for some reason. If part of you scares your ego or is foreign to it, then often the symbol will appear threatening in the dream, even if it has positive power.
