I started gym on Monday 25 June - I have been everyday except Saturday and Sunday's since then, giving me 12 gym sessions so far. I have also had 6 Power Plate sessions so far (and continued with gym anyway).

Basically, I walk to gym and back .. so that is 40 minutes brisk walk - therefore I don't really bother with the treadmill (a good thing since I am short on co-ordination and I almost shot through the wall behind me the first time I tried).

I do cardio on the rowing machine and the exercise bike for about 20 minutes each and then I do the training circuit as well as use some of the other machines available .... and then there is the Power Plate (which is not easy by any means) ....

Now the point of this post is ... I realise I am only in week 3 but when I look in the mirror, I am still the same lump of lard (sorry, not supposed to put myself down ... but you know ...) that I have always been. My eating habits are very strict with little (if no) fat and low on carbs.

When, oh when .... can I expect to see, and even feel .... tighter, firmer and well, just plain slimmer - (tape measure and scale refuse to budge)! When will I see results (gym related)

give your body and metabolism time......its probably not used to all this exercise...but see this is where everyone gives up on their diet and excerise....they dont see results so they figure its not working...but it is....keep up the good work...dont give up! You will start to see results....maybe give it about a month or so...i know thats a long time...however..it will be worth it...your body has to get into a routine....when you ride a bike...you shouldnt expect to go top speed right away...you have to build momentum .....you start out slow.....then you go alittle faster....then finally you hit a climax and go your fastest speed....but remember then you will hit a plateau and thats when you will then have to do something different...and push alittle extra harder....then you will be able to get the full grasp...dont worry ...it will be worth it....and believe me ...youll be singing a different tune later...just dont give up...and perhaps give yourself some variety...if you do crunches everyday...its going to be ...boring after awhile...perhaps walk to the gym one day....take a bike ride the next day....and maybe also rollerskate the next day....do crunches one day...the next day...use one of those large balls ..and dont forget to play...just have fun.....go swimming....take a hike ....go play laser tag....and if you do all these activities....you dont have to be strict on your food ....remember its your food that helps your metabolism go fast.....along with excerise...i mean dont go crazy with snickers or anything lol ....but you can treat yourself most definitly....and dont be starving yourself either...thats not healthy....and will slow down your metabolism .....good luck and let us know how it goes ok?
love, inny

I feel for you. I diet and exercise much to. I practically eat nothing and gain. My doc said it was due to my thyroid and Lithium. If no results you may want to consider seeing doc about thyroid levels.

Not related entirely to your post, but have you checked out fitday.com?

Thanks inny - yes I do need to be more patient! As it is, when I got up this morning all eager to go to gym, my body wouldn't move. I wrestled with myself but finally accepted that I overdid it yesterday and I gave my body a chance to rest today. I am not going to give up (I have too much to lose, if you know what I mean). Thanks for your encouragement!

Hi bepob - thanks for the tips! I do have carbs in the form of a slice of wholewheat toast with breakfast or oats which is quite high in carbs. My fat intake is limited to extra virgin olive oil but then I do have natural fats such as avocado pear, salmon fish and so on. I don't think I could ever rule carbs out completely. I think I am in danger of not having enough calories a day sometimes, so I must watch myself on that one!

Hi twirls - I recently had a battery of blood tests and thyroid checked out fine even though I have been medicated for underactive thyroid once before. Be that as it may, I have started taking supplements to aid metabolism. Thanks for the link - I will definitely have a look!

Thanks for your concern Muffy. I am not drinking any power drinks, and other than over exerting myself at the gym in the first 2 weeks, I am doing ok. I am pacing myself .............. as best I can!

I appreciate your concern!!

Sabrina,

Don't they say that fat is converted to muscle, so you don't always see results. Do you have some way to measure your fat to muscle ratio.

I've put on weight since being off my feet for two months.

Hugs,

EJ

Hi EJ

They warned me that I would most likely not weigh any less because of the muscle I have been rebuilding. They measured my fat and the results were screechingly awful but it wasn't measured fat to muscle.

My husband has been away for a week and whilst I might not see any difference, let's see if he does!

Even with the little I do, I see results within 11 days once I do a daily regime. This means my clothes fit better within that time. I don't bother weighing usually (unless a doctor is using that to measure.) I don't care if I would weigh 500lbs as long as I fit into and 8-10 When will I see results (gym related)

Yes, when you go to the gym if you are doing exercises to build muscle, you won't be losing weight. Make sure the trainer has you doing them for toning first? IDK if that's what you want. Usually if you go slowly you will tone, if you work feverishly that will build muscle.

Good wishes. Keep on doing the good stuff, you KNOW it will pay off if it hasn't already in strengthening your heart and lungs! When will I see results (gym related)

Be careful you're not putting your body in to too much stress by working out too much (i.e. every day if your body is not use to it).

I agree with sky about you not really losing weight if your just buidling muscles. If you are really wanting to lose weight, cardio is probably the best for you. They say that the first 1/2 hour of your cardio is burning the carbs and everything from your diet, and then after that it starts burning fat. That being said though, don't try and jump right in to that if you are not use to it ... try building up your endurance slowely, and everything will fall in to place.

Thanks Sky and jacq

Well, I have been going for almost a month now. Not weekends and one Wednesday when I listened to my tired body!

I am doing about an hour's cardio as well as the training circuit and power plate. I was only stiff in the first week and seldom get any stiffness or soreness now.

Physically, I must say I feel better and fitter than I have in a long time. But I can't feel my clothes fitting better yet. I am not too concerned about the scale at this point (can't believe I said that!) but I am bewildered as to why my measurements are stubbornly the same. Not even one little inch gone.

I guess I need to exercise (excuse the pun) patience. I wasn't in the best of shape and I suppose it will take a long time to repair the damage.

Oh yes, and EJ - husband said he "feels" a difference. That worked for me! When will I see results (gym related)

Sabrina, I joined Curves in late May, go 3x a week, and the first week my asthma cleared up and the second week I had better flexibility/range of motion in my arms (one of the things I really wanted), felt stronger and swear I had "harder" biceps :-) But I was unconsciously overdoing it with my dominant arm and had an ache there which then got worse/moved down into my wrist and thumb, very painful. I decided not to go for a week to see if things would improve/link to my overdoing it and nothing changed at all so I figured I also couldn't "hurt" the situation more. I went back and just was a bit gentler with that arm for a week (week 5?). Well. . . :-) then my other arm's shoulder started to ache and I got horrible pain down into my elbow and couldn't bend without shooting pains (fun trying to feed the cats, put on underwear, etc. :-) and was otherwise just in a lot of pain (so couldn't sleep) and getting kind of desperate. I hung on until last Monday (not going to Curves though for a couple weeks, last time I was there was 2 July) when I had a pre-existing doctor's appointment to review blood results from a couple weeks ago and base breathing test and other things we were looking at/tracking. Well, everything was fine but I had the low thyroid (which I suspect was "aggrevated" by the "extra" push of starting an exercise program and working hard at it) and the extreme pain and my asthma was getting out of control but I was busy with the pain, etc. so wasn't even able to care/pay any attention to that, etc.

Before going to the doctor's Monday (I last went in mid-May, this was all part of a "plan" between him and me) I assumed he was going to weigh me again and I figured I had only lost about 10 pounds in 2-3 months, not great. Some of that was being in too much pain the past couple weeks to care to eat (and having stomach problems with all the Advil I was taking that was doing nothing at all for the pain as well as too much asthma meds, etc.). He didn't weigh me but we did lots of pain/swelling (nerve compression problems in spine/shoulder/arm, whatever) and joint meds (an arthritis NSAID that works differently from Advil, I don't have any arthritis), a very short course of Prednisone, mostly to straighten out the asthma I think and now, some Synthroid for the thyroid. I'm 85-90% better here towards the end of the week, mostly problems caused by the different schedules and ways of taking several meds so I have to get up at night and often get working on the computer with my school work and "forget" to go back to bed :-) so have to nap the next day, etc. But I am not in screaming pain and I'm going to start Curves again Monday and I've got hopes and ideas of ways to do things better, etc.

You might want to get a full checkup now/after you have started this exercising and back off since you're only beginning (and have already had the can't-move "warning") and see where your body is "now". My thyroid was checked several times all last year and fine/borderline but finally very "obviously" low only since starting working on my exercising and diet, etc. I think, starting something "new" you might want to get a new readout/checkup with your doctor and make sure nothing has "changed" or that whatever has/has not changed that should of or shouldn't is identified? Not just thyroid but everything? Yesterday I had a spine x-ray just in case there's a problem with my neck but the doctor and I are just doing that as a precaution and don't think there's any complication there but who knows? One of the symptoms of low thyroid can be muscle/nerve pains and/or aggrevations so it's conceivable the thyroid meds are helping fix the pain/contributing to nerve health.

Bodies are complicated!

Sabrina, you drinking enough plain water? That can help. I've read we're supposed to drink 1/2 ounce for every pound we weigh (or our weight/2 ounces) every day for optimum health.

Hi Perna

Thanks for sharing. I am happy that your pain is manageable now. I attended Curves for a year and whilst I am not sorry for the experience, it turned out not to be my style at all. Plus, I didn't lose any weight as I hit rock bottom with my binging. Now that I have that under control (for the most part), and with the exercise, I am so eager to see some results.

Now, whislt I have been moaning here that I don't see any results (and my measurements are truly still the same), I am happy to say that I wore a pair of pants yesterday that I have not been able to fit into for many months. My muscles are definitely changing and I am starting to firm up. It is slow, but it is there! I have some severe issues with my body but I am feeling better about myself physically than I have in a long long time.

And I can also positively say that my endurance and stamina are slowly increasing.

I was ill this last week and stayed away from the gym so as not to overload my body!

Oh, and yes, fortunately I do drink plenty of water. Sometimes up to 3L a day. I have never worked it out according to what I weight though - I'm sure the answer will be pretty interesting!

Thanks again and good luck with starting Curves again!
