I am trying to wean off of Xanax.. and having a terrible time.. I guess I would say I am in Xanax "hxx".. literally..

I experience burning hot pain from the inside out... and my family practice doc has checked out the "normal" suspects that might cause a "hot flash" type pain..

This is constant.. unrelenting.. and oh so painful.. I have the air set at 65 degrees.. and a fan..

SOOOO if anyone has experienced this please let me know..

today pdoc said it is a "rare" w/d side effect...

is it??? what do you think??

thanks for any or all info..

((( freewill )))

I use small amounts of Xanax but have never weaned off.

I'm wondering if you are aware that anxiety itself can cause hot flashes as a symptom? I have them sometimes when my anxiety is roaring. I'm post-menopausal and have had my hormones checked, so it isn't that.

So, I just wanted to share that with you. It might just be the anxiety itself and maybe they will subside as your body adjusts to dealing with the anxiety without Xanax.

Rather than wean off xanax, could you just substitute another benzo, like clonazepam for the xanax?
Then back off that...it might be a little easier.

Thanks everyone...

I am in the "grips" of withdrawal... the burning.. is intense.. very.. I was on 6 .5mg pills... am down to 3 .5mg pills..

My family doc..pdoc.. do not believe in w/d sympthoms at all really..
Another physican.. that does do w/d... would treat me.. however, you literally have to sign your life away.. every right that you have - to privacy, to involuntery commitment, to be "studied" by med students" to a year of treatment.. ahhh no way..to being labeled a "drug adict" on you medical record.. and med students are a possibility - we are a "teaching" hospital area.. so most likely.. I wouldn't even get to see him.. just his med student..

I did get my pdoc to give me some valium.. yesterday.. so am kinda trying to see what I want to do..
(I had gone on the med at the time of my dad's death one of my abusers)...

Freewill! I'm sorry you are experiencing this. It is awful!
When I went off Xanax, after taking it for several years, when my prescription ran out, and my doctor was not willing to fill it again, I pretty much did cold turkey. I had severe anxiety combined with pain and tingling in my hands and feet. I had to just go to bed for several days, and I never want to go thru that again. I hope you can withstand what you're going thru.

hey. sounds like you are tapering off too quickly. benzos are really really addictive (i know drug treatment programs that will happily take people who have been clean for only 10 days off opiates or cocaine but not people who have been clean for less than 2 months off benzos).

can you taper a bit more gradually?

Freewill,
alexandra_k is correct! You are "tapering" WAY too fast! if you read the UK website you will see that Professor Ashton's benzo equivalency table reads :

1 mg of xanax equals 20, yes 20 mg. of valium, so you were on the equivalent of sixty (60) milligrams of valium! You have reduced that by one half, which would be equal to 30 mg.s of valium! In how much time? Yikes may people take literally a couple years to wean down to where you have , sorry but your doctors are crazy - read the UK site and be armed with the knowledge you need. Print out the Ashton Manual, it's free on benzo.org.uk.
I speak from experience as I also weaned from 3mg. xanax down to 1.5 but I did a valium crossover. It was still H%$# but doable. I have been an iatrogenic xanax victim for over 20 years!

Best of luck to you.

Olivia

Do you have any rash or red spots on your skin? It could be a allergic reaction to medication. I was on Triliptal and had allergic reaction and had severe burning pain in my face and chest. Keep a close eye out for any redness, rashes, or peeling skin. I took Xanax, years ago for depression and had panic attacks while on it and felt like I was floating. When I went to sleep it was hard for me to wake up, so I quit taking it. Good luck to you. I hope you feel better soon. Xanax withdrawal - burning pain..

I stopped taking zanax after taking 1mg per day for 8 years. I also decided to taper Rapidly off a huge amount of opiods that I had been taking for a severe neckinjury. I got to the point hwere they no longer worked and I wasn't willing to up the dose. I ended up in the ER due to my feet sweeting and tingling (pins and needle). It was to the point where I couldn't sleep and was losing a lot of fluid due to the amount of sweet. At the ER I answered all the questions and the Doctor gave me Clonopin. It worked great for a few weeks and then the symptomscame back but not nearly as severe. I was wonder ing how long will these symptoms last. I have had blood work done, my doctor finds no other issues. It's just a literal Pain as it only really happens when I lay down. Some people tell me it could last months due to the amount of time I tookthe zanax. Anyone know????????
