Actually more like - Can I just ask you one quick question here in the parking lot and not get charged for it.
Thanks for this!

I have had this happen so often! People think nothing of coming up and saying, "I just have a quick question . . ." My stock answer now is, "Well the quick answer is 'it depends.' Here's my card. Call me and we'll make an appointment to go over all the factors involved in getting an accurate answer."
Thanks for this!

Weird, I had no idea that was standard practice. hmmm. Well, my situation is kind of a strange one and it probably wasn't feasible initially and now H isn't an issue (he's otherwise occupied lol) it's the in-laws that are the issue. I guess I keep thinking that I need to experience bodily harm or the very real threat of it, not just veiled threats, before filing a restraining order. There's also my guilt issue...

In our State, harassment counts. You might not be eligible for an ex parte order for protection (an order issued without the other side getting a chance to present evidence or be heard on the matter) unless it's a domestic situation, but you can definitely get it under the Protection from Stalking Act, or whatever your State's equivalent is.
Thanks for this!

Thanks MKAC. I appreciate the info. Still hoping against hope that I can avoid it getting too nasty....guess that ship sailed when federal agents stormed into my house to arrest my H though....lol

anyway....just keep wanting to wake up and find that this isn't really my life.

You are not bothering me.
I was using it to practice the word spanking. It is a word I usually avoid because even writing gives me an bit of fearful anxiety. At my age. Good thing I have a therapist or two.

I can say "spanking." It's the word "whipping" that gets me. My hands are a little shaky just typing it.
Thanks for this!

I am not great with whipping either but in our house whippings were more casual than spankings.
Just that last sentence has me dry mouthed and sweaty palmed.

Sorry if the hug bothers you, stop. It is my way of expressing my empathy. "Thanks" seemed inappropriate for the statement you made.

The fear of finding out I might like to hit someone else is far too great

funny how the list of words meant different things in different homes.
Beat was never used except to tell us that we were not. As "stop crying, it isn't as if we just beat you. That was just a little whipping"

In my house:

Belt or other object (not only on the butt) = Whipping

Closed fist = Beat

In my family it was sometimes referred to as giving you a lickin'....it was such a weird term. Spankings were seen as just a little thing, regardless of how severe or long it continued or whatever. It was "just a spanking so stop crying or I will give you something to cry about."

The creative array of implements could be impressive.
And the stop crying or something to cry about must come in the handbook.

But I don't consider all that bad because we were not punched and they did not break bones.
Internal relativity.
Once I said to the therapist things were not that bad like some of my death row clients had happen to them. She, rather dryly I think, said something about it not being usual to use death row inmates as the standard.

Wow. That's exactly what my father used to say.

Where did this script come from? It seems so common. Was there a period of time when hospitals handed out a list of inane and hurtful things to say when parents left with a baby or something?

The other thing we heard a lot that was code for we were getting struck was, "I'll give you what for!" I don't think I ever actually asked, "What for?" so I always thought this was a stupid phrase. I did quickly learn that pointing out that I had not said, "What for" was not a good thing.

Spankings to me always seemed like that was what a normal family would do... like explaining what you did wrong and then getting a spanking when daddy got home sort of thing... like on TV

what happened in my house was always out of anger...never anticipated by the victim..never with warning... volatile is how I describe my family life... sounds so much better than abusive.

I found out answering "how many times have I told you x?" was not a good plan.
