I am finding it quite interesting what other people on the internet rally around and do not find manipulative versus what they do.

I am happy to only have one university commitment and her dr. appt this week. Probably some phone stuff for my private practice but hopefully more time to regroup than we have had in a month. Hard to believe it has just been one month since she/we got the news.

Cats in a box They are gorgeous! Sir Donut looks a little like one of our cats, except ours is short haired. They have the same lopsided black nose.

I brought some stuff home from my mother yesterday, in a paper bag, and while I was putting the things away I put the bag on the dining room table. When I went to put the paper bag away, there was a cat inside it. What is it with cats and boxes/bags?

I am much more pedestrian about cat names. Bill and Soot are probably feeling slighted right about now.

We give our cats rather fancy names, most likely because we are pretentious snobs. Our current two have Egyptian names.

Every. Single. Time. I try to talk to my mother about more than the time and weather, I feel awful. Somehow we only know how to talk about the painful past, in which I remember everything so vividly through the eyes of a helpless child, and she remains narcissistic and oblivious to all of the abuse she inflicted and the horrible things she let happen to me. I remember many things crystal clear and she remembers...her petty relationship drama and all of the issues she faced with "his" family.

After going through intensive therapy and being in a place of forgiveness and understanding with my mom, I now sit there and listen to her vent and relive her "annoying" story. I allow her to forget I was there too and to forget all of the anguish I am still fighting as an adult.

It's so hard accepting she will never change. I dream of having ANY sort of connection and relationship with her but she will forever be stuck in her patterns and warped thinking.

Had to vent.

For me, the name of the pet just has to be easy to say. When younger, I knew way too many cats named Alice and Gertrude, Stephen or Sappho etc. And I also was against naming them like a law firm. I have sometimes used characters from novels. (yossarian for example) (but we called him yoyo - so the snobby name was sort of overshadowed by the silly)

I think a lot of it for me is what the person's intentions appear to be, and some of that for me on here is based on background knowledge from private messages, off forum contact, etc.

I hope you do get a chance to regroup. Time passes weirdly when a loved one is very ill.

My brain feels like it is constantly getting brief electrical shocks - I think it's because my stress levels have been sky high for several weeks in a row. If I can just make it through this week I should be able to relax a little by next Monday.

I hope T tomorrow won't be horrible. I've had three horrible sessions in a row, and I just can't take another one of those, not right now, I have too much other carp going on.

Question: how do you deal with stress? I mean, what do you do to calm down when you're really stressed out?

I've got so much to do with my studies and the assessment etc that I barely know what to do. My brain sort of "freezes" when I'm trying to think about it all and I get super anxious.

I do breathing exercises and meditate. I teach my students to do breathing exercises because of how stressed they get.
I also walk my dogs a lot when I am stressed. Walking helps me a lot.

You know you are officially an adult when you are excited about ordering a new sports bra. My kids said the same thing when I was excited about my new 'Smart Wool' socks that I got for Christmas.

(((rts))) I'm so sorry you're in that place. I wish I could help. I'm in really bad shape at the moment, myself, and find it hard to be as supportive as I would like. I really like you, rts, you have become a good friend, and I hate it that you are feeling so anxious.

neutrino, I was thinking of you today - I was teaching in your 'hood. (well, not your 'hood exactly, I guess, but in your end of the world.) For me, there's certain music that can act as a de-stressor - anything written before 1600, almost, works for me. But as I wrote above, I'm super stressed at the moment, so I really shouldn't be giving advise on de-stressing....

"I say, sock, have you read the new rocket science dissertation?"
"Yes, sock, I have. I didn't think much of it, though. Far too basic for me."
"That is usually the case, sock. I cannot remember when I last read anything that was truly intellectually stimulating. I say, there's mother. Mother!"
