Granite,

You are in more than enough pain. I hope you don't hurt yourself.
Thanks for this!

Granite, if she closes the door forever, is that such a great loss? (I suspect she won't - she enjoys trying to control you too much.)

Maybe it's time to put aside the role of being a good daughter and time to take on the role of being good to yourself. You cannot help your mother, even if the hurricane affects her directly. You would only be re-entering the hell she's put you through all your life.
Thanks for this!

What's the name of that town in Wales that has the longest place name in the world?

Crocus, at first I thought a cat had walked across your keyboard...yes, I'm that cat-centric.

Granite; hang in there, and just go to therapy with an open mind and try and talk about what is hurting you the most at the moment. Please don't hurt yourself! Your mother is NOT worth the pain you put yourself through. I agree w ATAT, she might get "offended" if you don't call, but I guarantee it won't be the end-bc she does love to control you too much. I would cheer and dance if she said she was done w you. All she does is cause you pain, in so many different ways.
Thanks for this!

I am teaching in 20 minutes but all I want to do is turn off my office light and huddle under a blanket in the corner.

(I had to change phone numbers again this morning, thanks to future ex.)

@@ & granite - give them my phone number. I know how to talk to them. Promise them everything, give them nothing. Isnt that what they do? They just want to win and have bragging rights. They dont actually want to follow thru and have a relationship.

Yeah but then you often have to make it up and that is a hassle too.

I made it to my new European home with my husband and two teen-aged children. It has been a shock to my system, much more than anyone else. There are so many beautiful things about living here. I was just not prepared to immerse myself in them so fully and so immediately. Nor, was I expecting my son to lose his retainer on the flight over, so that we would have to locate an orthodontist on our first full day here. I already miss my t.

I say congratulations on negotiating to an orthodontist on your first day in a new country - that takes skill.

I am trying to find a cat tree for my cats with large platforms (their old one had 18 x 18 inch platforms, but of course they don't make it anymore or I would just buy the same one again). Everything is made for kittens and smallerish cats it seems. My cats are both 10-11 lbs. but they like to stretch out...don't most cats?? Why don't the people who design cat trees know this??

Exactly. And being behind a day is something students just can't handle - they never seem to understand the syllabus is now a day behind.

Which is why I went and delivered a pretty lackluster lecture.

I have designed such odd things. I know why- because all of this crap is made in China and the pieces need to be "knock down" which means able to fit in a box to ship cheaply and fit a certain footprint in store. Store buyers never want to go over a certain price so the pieces are as small and light as they can get away with. Being a larger cat owner and designer I have often made the same argument for correct size cat furniture to no avail.

My advice is to find a local company that custom makes cat trees. They will look nicer and be better made than the crap made in China. And now you know way more than you ever wanted to about cat furniture!!

My oldest dog is now so old he struggles to eat his evening treat. I sometimes can convince him to take a softer one, but sometimes, like tonight, he will refuse all offerings except the usual and it takes him about an hour to get through it. They are so tough that I may have to get out my sawzall and cut them in half for him so that he can finish it - he gets tired and holds on to the soggy thing and kind of whimpers at me, but he does not want to give it and he eventually does finish it.
I want him to be 5 again.

Thanks! I did figure it had to do with $$$, because, well, doesn't everything?? I am looking in the $200-$250 range. I wish I could spent more, but I am not the one paying for it. I have found some nice ones in the $500 range, but those don't have the nest box thing at the top that my flame point is in love with, anyway. He's the only cat I have ever had who uses it, but he sleeps in there every day.

Could you contact some local wood worker or high school shop teacher and see if they had a student who wanted to design/make you one for that price?

ATAT is right. Manipulative people do close the door, but they always open it again later.
