I can't do this anymore, i simply cannot do this. can't calm down My anxiety has been through the roof lately ... i'm in the middle of midterms and so i'm freaking out even though all i'm doing with my time - actually all i'm doing - is reading, and making cue-cards, and making notes ... but it feels as though none of that is doing any good because i can't concentrate. My heart just never calms down ... i'm so nervous about everything all of the time and i can't get a break. I wake up to anxiety attacks in the middle of the night ... and it probably doesn't help that my depression had a funny way of sneaking back right about now. How do i make this all go away? How do i push the past out of my mind for just a couple of days so i can stay focused? ... why does everything thing seem to difficult right now. can't calm down ...... i'm sorry everyone, im done.

Do you meditate or do relaxation? It helps very much.

... There is a meditation/relaxation I do where, after breathing and relaxing a few minutes, you purposely think about the things that have been on your mind.... then you create a sturdy box with a lid and a lock.... when that's done, you place those concerns that have been on your mind into your sturdy box and lock it, pocketing the key. You can keep them there in the box for now, and return to them later, any time you wish. ..... It's very relaxing to do this and it does give one a break

You might even write them down, tell yourself you have other things to think about right now and you will get back to those things on your list. Then put the list in a drawer, out of sight. Then give yourself permission to concentrate on what you need to right now.

I hope you feel better and that these days are productive for you. Best wished on your midterms!

I haven't tried any meditation/relaxation things before - well with the exception of when i was seeing my old T - and that sounds like a neat idea so i will give it a try. Thanks for the tip

Have you tried meds Jacq? benzos? I hate to be the person to suggest someone starts on those (as some doctors dislike them) but they really can help..... especially for severe anxiety which is likely to be short term...... can't calm down

I've never felt like this before ... i'm so scared. I talked to my RA (residence assistant) about some issues today and its nice to know that i have her to talk about ... but i just want to cry. I want to cry but i can't, and i dont want to at the same time because i hate it.

And the only meds i've been on before were AD's ... but i stopped those over xmas and i'm not to thrilled about the idea again .. and i'd really prefer not to. i hate the thought of being dependent on something to make me feel better ... why do things have to be so hard

A quieting, calming guided imagery is available free at this site; you can do it right at your computer: It's called Secret Garden: www.meditainment.com. If it doesn't sound good for now, maybe for later..

Sometimes I walk and walk and walk until I can get the adrenaline level down; I walk inside my apartment and it is only 20 paces from front to back! I have walked an hour or more at a time. Sometimes I do the relaxation. Sometimes I think hard and directly about what it is I'm worried about and try to look at all parts of it. Sometimes I start writing down my thoughts and don't stop until I'm tired, even if the writing is boring everyday stuff.

I hope you find some relief! can't calm down

reading these posts has made me feel like im no longer alone! its comforting to hear other people describe exactly what i feel. i constantly feel like i cant calm down, its especially bad at nighttime when im laying in bed thinking about everything i have to do. my heart feels like its going to jump out of my chest and sometimes i get so worked up i just cant sleep or calm down. my boyfriend has tried numerous breathing exercises with me but nothing works. even if its a silly thing to worry about, i still find myself worrying about it, and everything gets worse when i have deadlines/exams etc. what can i do to help this? should i see a doctor and get on some kind of medication for this? hellppp!!!!

Hi and welcome to PC, elizuk!

No, you aren't alone.

Even if the breathting exercises your boyfriend has tried with you haven't worked, three may be others that will, particularly if you do them alone, in a quiet setting. Shortly before bedtime or at bedtime are good for sleep, and an additional time or two a day will be even more helpful to keep you calmer all day so that it doesn't build up to the overload level. Here's a sight to try a guided imagery called Secret Garden; the guide is British and the exercise is very relaxing. The 20 minutes seem like 5 mins: www.meditainment.com. Also, I have ordered from this next site, after trying several of my psychologist's tapes: www.wholeperson.com. One relaxation exercise on one of the CD's is called "Clear The Deck" and is really helpful for what you describe--clearing your mind of the things that keep you from sleep or from focusing on what's at hand.

I hope this helps. I helps me. I do one after work sometimes and often at bedime. Sometimes I just do one for fun, because they are so enjoyable!

Keep posting and you'll get lots of good feedback!

Good to have you here!

hi I too suffer from anxiety and was so reluctant to go on meds, but I started taking Zoloft 50mg a low dosage and what a difference. It takes about 3-4 weeks for them to work but when your stressed your body quickly depletes your system of vitamin B. I take a vitamin B complex and vitamin C togeather. Like anything else it takes time to work and there is meds out there that will work immedietly but they are addicting, Zoloft has few side effects I had none, And they are not addicting. Also seeing a Natuopath Dr. if you want to try natural herbs, you don't have to suffer. I tried to meditate and I had a hard time relaxing,my body wouldn't let me, now I am alot more calmer and I can but it's still not my bag even tho it helps and I still try tho. All I'm saying is you don't have to suffer there is help you just have to explore what works for you.

yeah i have been really reluctant also to get on any meds, especially as seeing a doctor makes it all so much more real. i swing back and forth between attacks and when im not anxious, i feel totalyl fine and i dont feel like i need any help. but last night i had such a panic/anxiety attack. its kind of a questoin how long you let it go on i guess. does the vitamin B really help you out? i might try doing that first.

I find the vitamins work, I had severe anxiety it takes a week or so for the vitamin B complex to work you have to take it with vitamin C it helps it absorb better. Check out websites on these vitamins it explains it all. Doing research on anxiety really helps, it is easier to go thru something when you understand it. Also when you are having anxiety in bed let your mind focus on what your thinking, let it happen don't try to not think about it. Allow the thought to come, pay attention to it for 1/2 a minute then push it aside. Cognitive Behaviour therapy really helps. good luck from someone who has been there.....god bless. can't calm down
