I'm kinda with you Brian. I remember the time when it was considered normal to not be reachable 24/7. Whatever happened to planning in advance.

But I finally broke down and bought a cell phone last month, years after all of my friends have been bugging me to get one, because I have an older car and want to be able to call CAA if it breaks down when I'm driving. Also I'm job hunting so being able to take and return calls while I'm out is an advantage. That and it feels like all the payphones have pretty much dissappeared off the streets.

But I just wanted the most basic phone possible, nope the most basic phone I could get came with blue tooth, and a camera, and as I'm a bit of a technophobe a really thik users manual that I can barely decipher.

Learning how to use the phone's features is one of my projects for the weekend.

I didn't have a choice to jump in the cellular phone user market. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew wiped us out (South Florida) and the only communications were ham radio and cellular phones.

I'm with you about those crazy drivers holding a phone, eating and talking and driving at the same time. No wonder they have more accidents. We in S Fl passed laws against this, but the county commissions negated the vote. Cell Phones I guess the insurance companies liked the ability to charge higher premiums? Cell Phones

Most of the conversations I hear (in the elevators etc) are just chit chat, boring and annoying both. Cell Phones

It really doesn't matter if they hold the phone or not, it's where their mind is while talking. You can make a game of it if you want to, because these people are generally mindless to what they are doing physically... you can usher them out of the elevator before their floor, hold your hand up to make them pause physically while you pass, or just laugh when they laugh as though everyone can hear their conversation.

Even though I am trained to talk and drive safely, I pull off the road to talk on the cell phone when an important call comes in. (Important meaning from a doctor, usually.)

I hated them too, until I got one, and now I would be lost without it. I still don't usually like to talk on it, but it's nice to be able to call people when I need to, and also for people to be able to call me without having to learn half a million numbers because I'm all over the place.

I have one only because my DW insisted because of the severe cold up here and she is scared sometimes when she can't find me or I don't leave a note.

I have 700 minutes and unlimited L/D but, never use even 200 minutes a month.

People do mostly talk rubbish on their mobile phones I agree, lol. I have had one now for 5 yrs. I very rarely make phone calls because I don't like using phones and ppl never call me, lol. I do like the text messaging best and text ppl quite regularly. I have a PAYG phone.

One of my major pet peeves is people driving and talking on their cell's! We drove cross country last spring and there were SEMI drivers chatting away as their trailers were swaying on and off the road. One truck was so bad that we actually thought that he'd fallen asleep! When hubby passed him, (2 lanes away because the trailer was literally going off the road, hitting the rumble strips on the side and he'd jerk it back) he was talking on a cell!

Everyone in the family has a cell, but there is a rule, no talking while you're driving! When I'm driving, the kid in the front seat is responsible for answering my phone. If my daughter ever talks on her phone while she's driving, we'll take her car away.

I am guilty of talking on the phone for less than a min sometimes. I don't do it often anymore unless its urgent. But at least I don't run other drivers off the road like the many cell-phone stuck to their face people on this planet. If I wasnt so aware of my surroundings, I would have been side swiped more times than I can count!

One of my biggest concerns is when police officers are talking on their cell phones! Goodness sakes, they feel superior because they go through driving schools to handle high speed and all that...

I think many ppl can handle the idea of talking on the cell phone and mindless driving, especially if it's a path they drive frequently. My concern is when the other driver can't handle it, or when you get a flat tire, or something falls off the truck in front of you. Those extra seconds mean a great deal at that time. And though I guess most of us don't drive with two hands on the steering wheel, if one has a phone in it, you tend to hang onto it instead of dropping it....

But underneath it all... I wish that Western society could slow down enough to not feel like they have to cram their telephone calls into drive time! Cell Phones

iv ridden along with a cop a few times for a school project, and they talk on their cellphones and play with their computers while driving all at the same time lol.

I dont usually talk on the phone while driving, but i do normally send txt msgs. I can txt without looking at my cellphone tho cuz i know where all my buttons are. I dont think most poeple pay attention while driving anyway even if they arnt talking on the phone or eating or any of those things at the time. I know my attention wanders a lot while driving and they say having a passenger in your car is just as bad as talking on your phone while driving. maybe they should ban passengers? lol

I really can't fathom a call so urgent that you can't pull over to answer or make.

what i notice, is that the people who are bad drivers on the phone, are the same people who are bad drivers off the phone. knock on wood, i have never been in an accident when i was driving and when we did get hit, it had nothing to do with a cell phone.

here is my proposition: they should make people do things during the driving test. cause seriously... who drives at 10 and 2? who drives with the radio off all the time? the conditions they make people drive in are not real life conditions. they should make everyone drive while talking to a cell phone, eating or smoking. and if you can still pass a drivers test then, you are okay. i used to talk on my cell phone while smoking and driving a stick shift. now i drive an automatic so its not so bad. but seriously, i think if you talking on a phone hinders your ability to stay within the lines that bad, you probably shouldnt have a license in the first place.

I am guilty of talking while driving. I just recently got me a cell phone again. I got it because where I live it is cheaper for me to have a cell phone and a land line that I can't call out on only calls in on for emergencies. I need to learn that when I'm driving to use the hands free option on my phone or not to use it at all.

I seriously drive at 10 and 2!!!! although they discourage it now because of the air bags.

When I'm driving, I drive, I do not monkey with the radio, phone, or food. 99% of the time I have my kids with me and they're too important to risk because I don't like the song on the radio, in too much of a hurry to eat, or someone calling on the phone.

Ever seen someone who you think is talking to you, but you later find that they're on a Bluetooth headset? Lolness.

I have a phone but rarely use it. And what's with this texting while driving mess? Come on, now...What sense does that make?

It's a fact that people texting and chatting while driving can drive worse than drunk drivers.

Last on my rant:
Why do people get louder when they talk on their phones? If the phone is so darn upgraded, why do you have to act like you're on a Brick phone with a dying battery?

I have hated technology for a long time. HOWEVER....We can't totally condemn communication systems. I ride the bus everyday and I hear many conversations on the cellphones. People call friends they are on their way to meet and they wish to confirm the location. People call work to let them know that the buses are running late. People use cellphones to make appointments, answer crisis calls, to inform their kids they are running late, to order a gift for a friend, to inquire about a loved one's health, or simply to communicate. With technology, too many of us are communicating this way...by typing and emailing. To hear a voice on the other end is important as time schedules clash with meeting plans, training is bumped up an hour earlier and flights are being delayed. As you rush through traffic to meet an appointed time, they call you to let you know that the doctor has to cancel appointments for the afternoon because his patient just went into labor. A cousin calls while you are rushing through traffic to pick up last minute stuff before the wedding and the bride's maids' dresses are ready for pick-up.

Need I go on?

It is politically correct to complain about cell phones and I am NEVER not pc. However... I live in a rural state and have reported accidents I can't stop at and those I do. An accident I myself had and needed help. I use it to report murderous drivers. I have used my phone to always be available to my youngest child with special needs as she learns self advocacy and independence. I have used my phone to be notified of friend's crises and to be able to get there. I use it as free long distance after 9 and on weekends. I have used it to report injuries at swimming area. I have used it to report large livestock in roads causing a danger. I will agree that teens texting is stupidity to the nth degree. I will agree that chatting in public is inappropriate. I will also agree that I hate that they try to make the phones contain everything and make them so complicated. For my use I get used phones as much as I can. Our phones are no "in" but still bag phones were only 10 years ago. Technology is changing very fast.
