My previous pdoc in California was into alternative meds for depression since all the horrible side effects that I continually had with everything he tried.......

So according to him, it's the Omega 3 EPA that has to be taken at over 1800/day.......& the DHA can be at the 1000 but better the higher you can go.......I have also heard that the pills aren't as good as the liquid fish oil which is what I have been using.....it's basically a double of the dose that is stated on the bottle for me

For me, it really helped with my feelings of depression....it also helped the anxiety & the high blood pressure & the memory......so I highly recommend it in the way that my pdoc suggested because that's the direction I went in taking it just to make sure he was right.

Nordic Naturals is a pretty good quality pill form.....but I have found that at stores like "Good Earth" then have a lot more choices & that is where I actually found the bottled fish oil.

Have heard that Krill oil is also good, but don't know how to translate that into what my pdoc suggested was the right combination.

Remember, it's the Omega-3 EPA that is what functions for the depression & anxiety......DHA is good for all the other heart, body, & mind health.

How do you take the 'liquid' form of it?

I took it on and off for years and never noticed a difference, and I hated the fishy burps! I already get bad reflux from my other meds so that was too much to bare! If the non-fishy aftertaste kind drop into my pricerange I would be keen to give them a go again.

For me I had fishy burps too and I found it was easier when I took the fish-oil with oatmeal or certain other foods.

I found the best improvement by taking 1200mg fish oil in the morning and before bed, with 1000 IU Vitamin D3 in it. I now take 1000mg fish oil with lemon-flavored casings but I don't feel as much improvement as I did with the 1200mg + Vitamin D3

What I found is that I woke up easier, fell asleep easier, felt more rested, and had more energy throughout the day. Having more energy throughout the day, and having more stable energy throughout the day really helped with anxiety and depression for me.

I would love to get a fish-oil supplement with Vitamin D in it again.

How is your vitamin D level? For whatever reason, most people in the world (especially the USA) are deficient and need to take at least 2000 iu of D3 daily. D3 deficiencies are also indicated in depression...

But good nutrition all the way around, taking everything you need to balance your system, will always remove some maladies and improve overall health. It's a good subject to invest time into learning about, imo.

Remember that the greater the deficiency the longer it will take to build it back up to an efficacious level.

The fish oil I took has a lemon flavor to it to start with....I I just get a small glass of OJ or key lime yogurt & stir it is & then drink or eat it that way.

I have just taken the 2tsp's of it but I really don't like it straight out of the bottle.....so mixed in the juice works well for me.

The pills & even if the bottle of the fish oil gets older, it can get ransid & thus the horrible fishy after reaction....I have found when it's fresh & hasn't been sitting around (like sometimes I forget to take it for quite awhile).....go back & it's usually not as quality of flavor as it was to start.

I have leared that fish oil is not capable of improving the brain health much, but helps in getting good skin, and curing breast cancer. The consumption of it should be kept in balance as it increases the risk of prostate cancer in men as per a new study.

I'm not sure what recent studies have been conducted on the benefits of Omega-3's on depression, but the original studies may have been compromised due to a conflict of interest in the researcher. According to my pdoc at the time, who was a colleague of the pdoc involved in the study, the researcher's wife owned the company that made the Omega-3 supplements. Just something to be aware of. This was back around 2000 or so, so newer studies may be more reliable. I would look for different researchers for varied opinions on this one.

My T suggested that I take 2000mg daily for depression.
I've been taking it for a week now and I have seen an improvement in my mood.
I have much more energy, it does seem to be working for me.
I haven't had any problems with fishy burps!
Hooray for fish oil!
Thanks for this!

I have been helped immensely by 2,000mg of Omega 3's for my sleep issue and I have seen an improvement in my mood 100 percent.

Here are the recommended guidelines on my bottle. Each pill contains 1105mg of O3 (780mg EPA, 260mg DHA, and 65mg other omega-3), so you can adjust for your brand:
  • General health: 1/day
  • Triglyceride reduction: 3-4/day
  • Heart health: 2/day
  • Joint health: 2-4/day
  • Mood disorders: 2/day
  • Do not take more than 4 capsules/day (= 4420mg).

I haven't actually noticed any benefits from taking fish oils (have been taking 2000-3000mg/day for 6 months, along with eating a very healthy diet, taking meds, etc). However, I've read that they can take a while to have an impact, although literature generally does not specify how long this might be. Good luck!

I take Omega-3 Fish Oils daily, along with 4000U of Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C. I don't experience any fishy burps. I take up to 16-capsules per day totaling 8Gms of EPA and 4Gms of DHA. I began taking Omega-3 after reading (3) books recommending the use of Omega-3 EFA's for Depression/mood disorders.

^ careful @ above. You can OD on vitamin D. And 8g of fish oil seems to be a bit much. I think it increases stroke and hemorrhaging.

Unrelated: The slight pain that I get in my heart area always happens when I take fish oil. So I'm only going to take 1 every now and then instead of 2 every day. I went on the internet and other people were having this problem as well.

It is true that one can OD on VitD. However, it's hard to say who that may actually affect- many people are already low on vitamin D. The easiest way to avoid toxicity is to have ones VitD level checked when starting a new regimen.

Omegas are a little more difficult to actually OD on- the greater harm may be some of the vitamins that are often found in the omega formulas- particularly Vitamin A. Many omega formulas do not have large amounts of vitA now [or often any] as the risk is much higher with Cod liver oil, which is not generally recommended anyway.

One can have some digestive issues when starting them, but that can often be avoided by starting at a low dosage and slowly increasing- which is sensible when starting anything new. There may possibly be links to a slight increase in vulnerability to cancer... but it is unclear whether that is a valid risk, and if it is a lot of recommendations are that for many groups the slight risk [if it is there] would not outweigh the benefits overall.

The higher grade oils are most often the ones that don't have much else in them. Three that come to mind are Nordic Naturals, Omega Brite and Carlson's. I do not work for any of these companies, do not in any way make money for any of them nor am I personally, professionally or financially associated with any of them, just to be clear. I have personally taken both Omega Brite and Carlson's each for a lengthy amount of time and know many people who have had success with Nordic Naturals. I would recommend Carlson's most out of any of them only because they come in a variety of flavours, formulas and amounts and one can often find deals for the products on Amazon so the cost could be lower AND I have personally taken it.

In terms of mood, the EPA:DHA ratio is often what is most important- usually the recommended is approximately 2:1 but sometimes greater.

I didn't actually find much benefit in terms of depression until I started taking 4.5-5 grams a day of carlsons liquid.

It didn't happen over night, and it won't happen for everyone, and I have known people [bipolar] to become slightly elevated in response to fish oil as well.

As with all things, results may vary.

In Dr. Andrew Weil's book "Spontaneous Healing" he states you can take up to 20Gms of Omega-3 Fish Oils without any ill effects.

I do flax seed oil (double the suggested dose). I know I'm getting less EPA and DHA but then again the ALA from flax is useful for other stuff. (Fish/krill is out of the question for me.) I do notice a slight improvement in mood and health.
