Is he trying to get you to motivate why you don't want to kill yourself? If so he's not being very good at conveying that that's what he is doing, right?

Seriously, this guy sounds too weird.
I feel like I should clarify that I don't really want to die and that I don't want to kill myself. But I do get intense thoughts about that I should just die and that I "want" to do so when I for example fail things.

Anyway, he does the same thing with other subjects as well. He for example says things like "perhaps you shouldn't go take that exam", "perhaps you should just quit" when I tell him about my fear of failure etc. Like I said, I don't get it.

Do therapists normally use this kind of method? I'm not sure what he wants to accomplish.

From your tone - as far as i can deduce from reading it here - you are sounding pretty serious about your "failings". I think your t is choosing NOT to confront you with an argument as to why you are wrong in your thinking. He is more encouraging you to take your thoughts to their logical conclusion? I.e., just to think them out, follow your train of thought - if you keep contradicting them, you simply become better at arguing with yourself, at having this argument - "i'm dumb! No you arent! Yes i am!" Better at going around in circles. I think he's trying to get you out of that loop. Do all ts do that in exactly that way? Well - do all clients do that in exactly that way? And are all clients as smart as you are - and are all ts? Lots of variables there!
Thanks for this!

I did not have a skip-it.

I did it today. I confessed the biggest, darkest, secret-est thing to T. She handled it (and me) really well. I'm right proud of her.

I understand now why T said that as a T, you can only take someone as far as you have been yourself. I really get it.
wow this kind of stings but wow good for you and your t. I guess mine took me as far as she could the minute I told her my huge dark disgusting secrete

Yeah, that might be what he's doing. I don't know. I'm not saying it's a good or a bad method (though I do feel belittled sometimes), I just don't understand it and I always have to think twice about whether or not he's serious (and I can't always tell).

Neutrino... that would really piss me off, personally. Although, I am t-proof or something, lol, I don't know. Can you ask him what his technique is? "Yo T, what the hell do you mean by that?" Ok, maybe not that way, but seriously, it bugs you so ask.

Granite...what you told her was not disgusting. She is just not exactly helping you. She doesn't hate you. She doesn't think you're gross. She thinks the way she is handling things will work. Her bad. Because they don't work and haven't worked. Not saying she's evil or horrid, just that she doesn't have what you need. Maybe it works well for zillions of other clients, that doesn't mean it will work for you. Not your fault. You are not bad.

dying, dying, dying for grilled cheese. Grilled Daiya just doesn't cut it. I want grilled cheese, and tomato soup, Campbell's Tomato Soup. Grilled in butter. Yea. In a cast iron pan the way my Aunt used to make it.

sigh.

I do understand this - you don't come across as wanting to kill yourself, but I know that the wish to just not exist can be really strong sometimes. I responded in your other thread, too.

T: how would you feel if that happened? What would you do? Would you kill yourself?
Me: I would probably feel like dying, yes. I mean, I wouldn't do it but I'd really hate myself and I'd probably want to die.
T: then maybe you should just do it? Perhaps you should kill yourself?
Me: no.

His tone of voice suggested that he was being serious but that he didn't mean what he said (at least I think so). He does that a lot and a lot of the time I don't know if he's serious or not (in this case I think it's quite obvious he didn't mean it, since I doubt any sane therapist would encourage their client to take their own life). Anyway, is this some sort of legitimate method he's decided to use to make me realise how ridiculous (or whatever he thinks) my thoughts are or what? I don't get it. It puzzles me. It sort of makes it seem like he doesn't take me seriously all the time and I think it makes it seem like he belittles my thoughts.

What do you think?
I would be upset. I would think (and say) that T was mocking me.

Keeping busy is good. I hope you'll have a good trip.

I've been booking trips like a whole herd of migrating mammoths, lately. I'm going to the UK in early February, and early March, and in mid-April, and possibly late April, and then to the UK and Ireland in August... and I've just realised that I'm not sure when my passport expires. I should check that when I get home. I have plenty of time to renew it before February, but I don't want to leave it until it's too late.
Hmm. No, I think I'm good, because I seem to remember that I had to get a new one when I travelled to the U.S. in 2007 (because my old passport had a tiny crack in one page), which means that that one expired in 2012, so I would have had to get a new passport then, and in that case I'm good for another three years. I know that in the U.S. lots of people don't have or need a passport, but from what I understand it's much more of a hassle to get one there.

Sorry, I babble. I'm trying not to be all disgustingly cheerful after this morning's T session.
I'm glad to hear you are disgustingly cheerful!

Oh, I'm so sorry, CE. That is a heart-wrenching decision to have to make... but there comes a point where we have to make that decision.

So very sorry about your cat CE.

Granite, do you have an email address for your prospective T? Could you send her a short note in advance explaining that you find it very hard to talk? Just so she is aware of the situation. It might make it easier for you if you know she knows that.

Saw T today, she was helpful about the out-of-control anxiety I've been having. I got shaky telling her about it, but no panic attacks today. So it was a good day.
Thanks for this!

Changing the subject entirely...

There's a song on the radio, probably from the eighties, that I'd like to get the name of.

It has a nice bouncy keyboard riff and the chorus (male vocalist) goes something like:

Dream ... of ... me ...
Take ... me ... up ...
I'll ... be ... gone ...

I've Googled all these phrases together and individually, but they are very common in song lyrics (cliches, in fact) and anyway, Google is no use if I've heard the words wrong.

Sorry to hear about your cat CE.
Granite... way to go on the T front!
Jersey...this too shall pass, I promise.
Neutrino.... your T sounds like a jerk, who says that to a client?
Shout outs to all others!

My project will be determined tomorrow at 8am, i hope they pull the plug, we aren't ready and I've gained 40lbs and am stressed out.... I just need to sleep.

I've googled the lyrics and it's plausible. I can't play the video because I'm at work. I'll check when I get home.
