I'm thinking of joining. Are they any good? I joined eDiets before (this online weight loss program) and it was a total waste of money.
Also my BMI is 24-25, would they accept me? I read the rules on their site, but I'm still not sure what they mean. I want to eat healthier and start exercising. I think having real life support would be good. Before I got a tutor I didn't study, but with their support I'm now getting A's. I really need the support. Online support doesn't cut it. Would Weight Watcher's be good?

I have had friends have a good deal of success
![]() I think there are ways to 'trial' it - e.g. go to a couple of meetings without making a financial commitment? I don't know anything about the BMI I am sorry, what does the website say? My view is that it really does promote a healthy way of eating, and it makes the diet easier to stick to because you have social support, and it is easy to use the points system - that is what I have been told, anyway. Do you have any friends who might even want to go with you? That could be a good motivator for continuing to go to meetings ![]() |

Here is what they said on the site:
"Any person who weighs within five pounds of the bottom of the weight goal range (BMI 20-25) for his or her height is not eligible for membership." Are they saying those with a BMI of 20-25 are not eligible or are they saying that if your weight is 5 pounds from a BMI of 20, then you're not eligible? I don't have any friends to go with me unfortunately, but maybe I can make some friends there.

You don't need WW for healthy eating, imo. You aren't overweight and those who are paying to lose weight might not understand.
A nutritionist at a local hospital would be less cost, and more benefit, imo. It's often covered under insurance also...and allows more than one visit. They know all about foods and current products that are available. They will take your history of what foods you like or don't and why you eat or don't. They can also help you make a food plan, and are great for encouragment and questions/answers.

My dad has had lots of success on weight watchers. I didn't. Everyone is different and that's why there are so many different methods out there. For me jenny craig was better, but right now I can't afford it - because of buying the food it is VERY expensive. Weight Watchers actually isn't all that expensive compared to a lot of weight loss programs. Sometimes they have these times when you don't have to pay the charge to join, just the weekly charge. The meetings are fun and you can make friends. I enjoyed the meetings, but the plans didn't work for me (I can't be told that I can eat anything as long as I have the points... I need something much stricter than that or I fall off the wagon WAY too often). Still, it is one of the most successful plans out there so if you are going to try one of these plans, this is the one to start with!!!
On the other hand, have you ever read Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Loss Solution? I have friends who have had TONS of success with that one and am going to read it myself. No weekly charges for that one! Just a book! And since it sounds like you are not really overweight, you just want to live healthier, that might be a good option as well. |

But - please keep in mind that you do not have to join them to do the W.W. Program...... all you need is their base package plan and you can do it your self - they sell them on Ebay. Do you or your doctor think you are over weight? - if yes then I would go for it, but keep in mind that they have no weight loss program for any one that is under 150 pound - only a maintenance program. |

The thing is, I need more support than a book can give me. I think I would like a points system. I like being able to eat whatever I liked.
I have huge motivation and procrastination problems. Before I got a tutor I wasn't studying and I got F's, but now I'm getting A's. Having someone care really helps, even if I have to pay them. I don't need to be super skinny or anything. I just want to be within normal. I'm still within normal weight, but I'm on the high end of normal. I eat a lot of junk plus I don't exercise. I need help with this. I'll check out the nutritionist thing Sky. I have insurance now so maybe they will pay for it? I'm going to ask my pdoc about that maybe. WW's is not too expensive. Right now membership is only $2 instead of $25 and for 16 weeks it's about $190. If it really works it's worth the money. I mostly need the support. I'm not super overweight or anything though, I hope the people there won't hate me.

My pdoc doesn't think I'm overweight, but I think I am a little. I'm asian and overweight for asians is over BMI 23. That's when health problems start popping up.
Hmmm...WW's don't have a plan for people under 150 lbs? That might be a problem. I'm really short. I'm only 4'11" and I weight 120 lbs. I'll check out the eBay stuff. I didn't know they had that.

I joined the online version and that was very good. I enjoyed the point system, it is "fun". I didn't feel a meeting each week would be any more helpful than their online site.

I think I need the real life meeting. I tried eDiets, this this online thing and that was a total waste of money for me.
I really need to see someone in person to motivate me.

To read the Weight Watchers guidelines (below); pretend you are 5 feet 3 inches and less than 25 years old. Weight Watchers says if you weigh between 113-130 you are healthy and don't need to lose any weight. Those are the minimum and maximum weights for someone younger than 25 and 5 foot 3. So, if you were to go to a meeting and were within those guidelines, they wouldn't let you join since you are fine/a healthy weight.

I'm 25, almost 26.
I'm 4'11" and weight about 120 lbs. I can join right? I'm also searching for registered dieticians. I'm trying to see if there is one close by. I know WW's is really close and convenient for me.

I don't know, maybe not; your maximum weight is 119 so I kind of doubt they'd be interested in taking your money so you could lose 1 pound. I don't think they care about "perception" and how you look, etc., just the health/statistics of it for legal reasons. They don't want people too thin saying, "yes, I got too thin through Weight Watchers!" :-) So they have the chart. You would be one of those following the "maintenance" plan so wouldn't be supposed to be losing as you'd be in the "zone" you're supposed to be in.
But go to a meeting! You don't "join" until after your "interview" I think where they weigh you and get your information, etc. All that is done first and then they have a little pep talk sort of "meeting".

Hmmm...I emailed them asking if I could join at my height and weight. Hopefully they will reply. I can also go tomorrow and ask. It's really close by.
So I wouldn't be able to lose any weight? That sucks.

GL, I don't know anything about you really, so I can't comment on your eating habits, obviously
![]() I think if you were to join, it would really just make sure your eating habits were really healthy ![]() When you eat and exercise right you tend to tone up, so you might not drop a massive lot of weight, but i am sure you would look even better than you do now ![]() You sounds like you feel you need some support in eating right, and if so, then more power to you for seeking a solution ![]() |

Thanks
I just read some reviews of WW's and they're really good. I think I'll go tomorrow and ask them questions about the program and if it would be right for me.

Bummer.
I think it depends upon which group you join, btw. I've been thinking about this for you... and a friend of mine who really needs the group support ended up quitting WW for good. It turns out she went one year, and had to quit and when she went back two years later, there were all the same ppl, just as "fat." She figured they just go for suppport and not to lose weight. Wasn't the motivation she needed. ![]() You can get personal support from a nutritionist, if you check them out to make sure you find one that does this. Mine even gave me her email for contact. But I could always call, and could go in if I needed. Have you tried the Real Age web site? It is chock full of how to live healthily, and long!

I just got an e-mail back from WW's and they said I qualify for membership! The healthy weight ranges for a person 4'11" is 99 to 124 pounds. Right now I'm about 121 lbs and they said I qualify! I'm happy.
I'm going to join tomorrow. I can't wait to get motivation for eating healthier and exercising! I really need the support. I can't seem to do things alone. A friend of mine is also going to start WW's. We're going to do it together! It'll be fun. I'm going to get fit and healthy! Ya!

The groups are great. I wasn't successful because I was bad about actually measuring things and counting points, but the groups were wonderful. I was always under 150 when I was on it but being 5'0" that was very overweight. They have a point amount for people that weight. They actually now have a pretty cool way of figuring your points with the flex plan where they take your sex, age, weight, height, and activity level into consideration, instead of just your weight.
Best of luck, I hope you do as well as my dad has done!!! |

Good luck! I have had good results, but it doesn't happen overnight.
The meetings are an important part of the plan. You will see both fat people and slender people there. Some have a little to lose, some a lot. Some of the slender ones have lost significant weight, and are lifetime members. They have hit their goal weight, so now they weigh in once a month instead of once a week, and they don't have to pay unless their weight goes up more than two pounds. The meetings are motivating, if you have the right leader. The leader in my class lost 45 pounds on Weight Watchers. She looks great. I remember one lady a few years ago when I tried WW for the first time. She was huge, but she had just lost her 100th pound! She had a long way to go, but she was proud of her progress. I have lost 20 pounds, but it has taken eleven months to get there. I still want to lose another 20.
