From time to time, I have had the same problem with my scales. By the way, I have been absent for a couple days. I will get right down to this tomorow.

Aiming to start a healthy eating regime again now I’m stable and outpatient. Started juicing and plan to keep the calaries down and swim three days a week. Hopefully this thread will motivate me to stay on track.

This morning weight is 160.4, another new low so I think I am in a slight deficit. Scale still doing the funky 1.4 pound adjustment, so it read 159 when I first stepped on.
@Tucson - I wondered where you disappeared to and was hoping everything was okay. Good to see you back.

13137 steps; logged some of it. 1951 calories. That seems a little high to me, but maybe not. I am just wary of increasing and would still like to go slightly lower into the upper 150s. Starting the notice pants are getting a little looser around the waist even as weight is staying pretty constant. Probably recomping some into legs from all the walking. Today I jogged a little; I wish I had turned on HRM but I didn't think about it until after; it was sort of unplanned. It may not have been a good idea; I feel a little discomfort behind left knee cap. I will take some prescription strength naproxen before bed and it should be fine.

I walked 2, 848 steps today. I'm back on my diet but keep forgetting to weigh myself in the morning. I'm pretty happy though that I seem to be back to just above where I was when I got sick and had to stop dieting until my surgery 3 months later. 2 lbs to get to where I was then. But my jeans are already bigger than they were before so that's a good sign. It's a little tricky doing this while my body is adjusting to the lack of a gall bladder but I'm doing it. Slowly and surely. I hope.

I am back!
![]() I weighed 178 this morning. I did not walk at all. I had 2400 calories today, a good part of it dessert. This does not include a mini dish from TJs of some bits of meat and curry with a side of rice. Anyway, this is not healthy for me. I will start walking tomorrow, maybe a couple miles or more. Several days ago I walked over six miles for exersize. Unfortunately my wrist monitor ran out with its battery. PS My daughter is in a really difficult spot due to her bad wreckess judgement. It’s going to affect the rest of her life, including to some degree with her mothers and my life. So no college for her. No good jobs. Little money. |

I weigh 178 again. I will walk today for 2 to 4 miles. I had a good eggs with chorizo. I will have a couple hotdogs for lunch. I will have spaghetti and meatballs dinner. The trick will be how to increase the calories with this given menu. My weight gain must be from those high calorie meals I ate, trying to meet my calorie needs as given by my wrist monitor. So for the time being, I will not include the exersize into my calorie target for today. My wrist monitor is obviously in error. I may go back to the settings that replicated what UpDownAround is getting on his monitor for calories spent on exersze.
@UpDownAround: My daughter is a troubled young adult. I do not know what I did wrong in raising her. However, right now this is the way she is. She probably will need to learn the hard way from her future troubles that she will get herself into. |

Only 5551 steps today. I had an issue with one of my kids this afternoon when I would have liked to have been walking. She had been drinking and she is only 17. So you aren't the only one facing some kid troubles. I can't come down too hard; I am in recovery myself, but that's what makes me worry most. But I think a day of "light work" is a good idea after the running experiment yesterday.
I also got a bit of an arm/shoulder workout. I got a new toy for use as it gets warm - a stand up paddleboard (SUP). I got an inflatable and I wanted to make sure everything was in good order before I take it out. The inflatables are high pressure to get rigid. After blowing it up I tested it by sitting on the middle of it with only the ends supported. It barely flexed. I walked at lunch but didn't look at steps then. I wonder if pumping gave me steps. 1800 calories. Still eating an awful lot of junk and sodium has been high yesterday and today, so I may have a water weight swing. I didn't log any exercise for extra calories. I am not sure 1800 is right for me sedentary; I think it might be less. I will weigh in the morning.

Not my best day for weight loss. Extremely tired so I only walked 1823 steps and my eating wasn't fabulous. not the end of the world but not fabulous. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow.

I had 2800 calories. I have walked about 13,000 steps today. My wrist monitor tells me that this totals to 825 calories burned. Since I have found this value grossly inaccurate, the value needs to be adjusted. I need to find a way of approximating the actual calories burned, or some proxy of this.
I have researched this topic to find that all activity monitors will be significantly inaccurate with respect to calories burned, up to 20% or more calories in error. So to start this out, I will use only 80% of the original value. I think I will find that once my exersize becomes routine, I will be burning off close to the same amount of calories every day with respect to my exersize. So in this way, I will be able to better determine the calories burned since it will not be a moving target. I will exersze tomorrow too. I also need to once again begin the planning the next days menu. I will have more control over the calories I eat. Last edited by Tucson; Apr 13, 2018 at 12:28 AM. |

@Tucson - I think once exercise becomes truly routine, as in doing roughly the same amount each day for a while, the effort it takes it will drop off some. Even when I walk briskly a long way and tackle some big hills, my HR doesn't get out of the 120s. That is aerobic, but not high effort. I will probably drop off on the amount of steps as I am starting to incorporate more upper body work into my regimen.
I weighed 162.2 this morning and the scale once again registered exactly 1.4 pounds lower the first time and then 162.2 on two more checks. It takes a button battery that I will have to pick up somewhere to replace.

I weigh 177 right now. I have my meals planned out for today starting with my oatmeal concoction that is made with milk and sugar. I purposely cook it thick so I will need to thin it back out by adding *more* milk. My kind of oatmeal.
![]() I must be getting into better shape. Usually when I rest at a restaurant half way through my walk, it takes some time for my heart rate to drop back down to 100 bpm or lower. Now this is starting to happen much more quickly. This is a good sign. My goal is to walk four miles without stopping, and then after a short rest, walk back without stopping. I am sure this is doable for me in the not too distant future. I think it is a good idea for me to begin to work on my upper body too. I should still have a membership with LA Fitness next door. I have heard of the elliptical exersize machine that I want to try out. |

Some of the best upper body exercises to start with are good old fashioned body weight - push ups and pull ups.

@UpDownAround: Yes, you are right. However, there are not any pretty ladies at my home as there are at LA Fitness.
![]() My wrist band is giving me about 140 calories per mile. I have consulted various online activity calculators, including one claiming to be accurate. This method has come up with me burning anywhere from 110 to 120 calories per mile, and perhaps a bit more depending on my effort. The difference is about 20%. So my monitor is not that terribly inaccurate. I may still be able to use this number as an estimate. So I will take the total calories for my exersizes for the day and reduce it by 20%. I will add this to 2150. This will be my calorie target for the day. At least this will provide me a starting point. I am walking enough nowadays to need to be able to factor in exersize. As a side note, I have a much harder time getting my heart rate above 140. Between this and how much more rapidly my heart rate recovers from exersize, I think I am actually becoming healthier. Here is a link to that “accurate” online calories burned calculator. https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1350891527 PS Anyone having problems accessing MFP? My web browser comes up with a blank page due to what it states as too many redirects. Earlier today it was working. Last edited by Tucson; Apr 13, 2018 at 07:59 PM. |

@Tucson - I have not had trouble with mfp. I am at 14158 steps, 6.33 miles in 139 minutes according to my watch. It calculates 574 calories. At that web page you pointed me at, I plugged in 3 mph for 120 minutes, ignoring the other .33 miles in 19 minutes as probably part of my normal day. That page calculates 457 calories. 6.33 miles is only 5.5% more than 6 miles, but 574 calories is a little over 25% more than 457 calories, so my watch is about 20% higher than that web page. Not that it matters since I rarely log exercise calories and then I do it very conservatively.
So... 14158 steps. I didn't log any of it. 1805 calories. The way things have been going, I probably need to change to 1700. I seem to be dependent on unlogged exercise to make 1800 work.

I have had 2470 calories today. I have walked 10,950 steps. My exersize amounts to 675 calories. So taking 80% of this and adding the result to 2150 gives me 2690 as my target for the day. After the hot cocoa, I may have a snack size packet of shortbread cookies before the day ends. This can boost me another hundred calories closer to my target.
Even though I have had a total of about 80 minutes of cardio exersize this time, which is only counting time when my heart rate was above 123, I now find it difficult to get my heart rate to above 140. This is where the more intense cardio exersize begins. This is where I want my heart rate to be for a good part of the time. So what to do? Look for a place to walk that has hills? PS I have adjusted my initial calorie goal down to a maintenance level of calories, 2031. I initially had it set for gaining one pound a week. Last edited by Tucson; Apr 13, 2018 at 11:31 PM. |

I now weigh 176 pounds. This may be just an expected wiggle in the value of my weight. I have planned my menu for today except for dinner and snacks. I am thinking of making spaghetti for dinner. I also really like the hot chocolate at IHOP. Earlier in the afternoon, I will walk two to four miles, depending on how I feel after the first mile. I am still a bit worn out from my walk that I did yesterday. Fortunately I have been experiencing good weather days here in a Tucson. When the days come where temperature reaches close to or beyond 100 degrees, I will have to get up early in the morning for my walks. No more six and a half walks for now.

I have walked 11,122 steps for exersize. That calories burned calculator uses a Mets value, metabolic equivalent, to specify the intensity of the exersize. There are charts that give you specific values for many different activities. Using the appropriate Met value, my calories burned come to 461. This is much much lower than my wrist band. So I will use this figure for now. So this means my target for today is about 2500 calories. I will come in about 2385 calories today.
PS I am going to have to experiment more on my monitor. It was working better than this in the recent past. PITA A real PITA. At this point in time I do not think another model would be much different. Tomorrow you will be finding me walking all over my townhome complex until I can get it to work better. This should end up as allot of exersize. EDIT I have finally found an activity monitor that has only a 10% error in calories burned. Other Garmin watches have an accuracy of about 60%, and in my case, maybe less. So for let’s say 450 calories burned, this means actual may be as low as 400. In other words, only a 50 calorie difference. This is definitely doable. Last edited by Tucson; Apr 14, 2018 at 10:39 PM. |

18695 steps. This time I did log some of it for 240 calories. 2043 calories. Way over suggested sugar and carbs but still had 82g of protein and 26g of fat. I will weigh in the morning. I am planning to go paddling in the morning; will be interesting to see if that gets recorded as activity.

Today was a bust for me. I went to a wedding reception and a dinner was served. Today was a big deal because family from my mom’s mother’s side of the family attended the reception. I usually only see them at funerals. I did not log MFP. I did not wear my Apple Watch to the reception. I wore my dress watch. I’ll start fresh tomorrow
